JULY-AUGUST 2021 Official Newsletter of Chester United Methodist Church—www.chesterumc.org WELCOME THE DECKER FAMILY Dear Friends in Christ at Chester UMC, This is Nathan Decker and family, soon to be your new Senior Pastor and parsonage family. We look forward to meeting each and every one as well as learning the story of the people called United Methodists at Chester UMC. I grew up on front porches, WORSHIP SCHEDULE sipping sweet tea, and listening to tale tales and yarns. Stories help us interpret where Contemporary Worship we have been and discern where God is Davis Fellowship Hall leading. I look forward to listening about 8:30 AM life around the Chester/Chesterfield County area and learning how God is Virtual Worship already at work here. Facebook & YouTube Ethan, Stephanie, Nathan, Elijah 10:00 AM I was born and raised in rural Missouri in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains between cows and railroad stops. My Traditional Worship wanderlust brought me to Virginia. I did my undergrad at Averett University. My M.Div. is from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. I also completed work Sanctuary on my Th.M. at Virginia Union and some coursework towards a MAH at Norwich 11:00 AM University. During my studies, Stephanie and I met while we both were working at Target. At our wedding, we even had our Target employee name tags on Worship By Phone display. 804-768-9594 Anytime Stephanie grew up just outside of Ashland. She recently graduated as a Registered Nurse. She has a lot of patience and forgiveness. This is good for our household, as she has to put up with Elijah, Ethan, and me. Our boys are both full of energy and excitement. If they were not enough, we also have a Pug whose name is San Diego El Diablo (St. James the Devil) and a Terrorist (I mean terrier) named Cookie Wookie Monster. We have been blessed with almost two decades of ministry in town and rural communities from the Eastern Shore to Southside. In a miracle of grace and action of our Lord, we feel privileged to be sent to you as Pastor and family. We’re excited about exploring our relationship with God together. We look forward to being with you in our faith walk. The Creator’s hand has urged us onward, INSIDE THIS ISSUE… Christ’s heart is keeping us steadfast, and the Spirit’s flame will show us the way. We’ll be praying for you as we know you are already praying for us. Please join us after the 11:00 Service Sunday, July 11, for an Ice Cream Social to say “Hello” and provide an extra warm welcome to Nathan, Stephanie, Elijah (16), and Ethan Decker (13). We plan to gather on the parsonage lawn so feel free to bring a chair. WEAR YOUR CUMC NAMETAGS! Help Pastor Nathan and his family learn names by wearing your CUMC nametag! Need a nametag? Contact Terry in the Church Office ([email protected], 804.748.6006), indicate how you want your name to appear on the tag, and drop a check in the offering plate ($10 per nametag, payable to CUMC, Memo: Nametag). CUMC WELCOMES DECKER FAMILY As chair of the SPRC, I wanted to take a moment to introduce our new pastor, Reverend Nathan Decker. He will be joining us the first of July and you will get to meet him in the pulpit on July 4th. He plans to move into the brick parsonage with his wife Stephanie and their two teenage sons, Elijah and Ethan. Pastor Nathan comes to us from High Street UMC where he served for six years. He has also served at Cheriton UMC on the Eastern Shore, South Sussex Charge in Jarratt, and Ivey Memorial in Colonial Heights. He brings his experience, excitement, and love of God that he will be sharing with us. I have found him to be easy to approach, thoughtful, quick with a smile, and a gentle spirit. His boys are full of energy. Stephanie has an effortless smile and is also easy to approach. I’ve not yet met the family pets. They come here with an attitude of “making Chester UMC home.” I look forward to getting to know the Decker family better. I hope and expect that they will find a warm and receptive congregation of the great people that make up Chester UMC. Make a point to get to know him and his family. Since he has served Ivey Memorial they are familiar with the area, but be ready to offer them suggestions and directions for the questions they may have. In Christ, Tom Petrey, Chair Staff/Pastor-Parish Relations Committee MUSIC NOTES Have you ever listened to the symphony of creation? It’s the summer song of birds chirping in the trees; the rustle of the wind through leaves; the gentle steps of critters in the woods; the stoic, reverent majesty of the mountains; the babbling of the brook racing over rocks and ledges; and the hushed stillness of a winter evening. “Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord…” (Psalm 96:11-12, NRSV). When we worship, whether it’s at church, in our cars, our backyards, or even at our desks, we join with all of creation in praising the Creator! Isn’t that a powerful image?! I dare say that creation is in a constant state of worship. And so, let us be challenged to live in the same way! May each breath be an acknowledgement of the Source of that breath. May each word glorify God. May every heart beat strive to align with the rhythm of God’s heart. May each tear remind us that God is with us in the valleys and, in turn, let us offer a praise of thanks for the unfailing Presence. May each smile display the joy of the Lord. Let us all strive to life a life of praise! “Sing”-cerely, Joshua Wortham 2 CHAD’S CHALLENGES “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” Isaiah 43:19 We are in a new season in the life of our church family! We would not be human if we did not experience new seasons with mixed emotions—fear and hope, anxiety and relief, sadness and celebration. Here are a few reflections on this season: • We remember Pastor Clara (read Hebrews 13:7). We give thanks to God for her sharing of the word of God and for her faithful witness. We pray for her, her family, and her future ministry. How will our ministry evolve without her spiritual leadership? • We welcome Pastor Nathan Decker, our new lead pastor, and we welcome his family as beloved members of our very own family! Will we trust his leadership (read Hebrews 13:17)? Will we trust that God has sent him? • I have been commissioned as a provisional elder and provisional member of the Virginia Conference. What will my future service look like as I take up my cross daily and follow Jesus (read Luke 9:23)? • COVID-19 appears to be subsiding. Virtual worship continues, but what are its challenges for engaging new people and the homebound with the gospel? In-person worship and small groups are vital and vibrant, but why are they only moderately attended? • Our missions have continued as our faithful witness to the love of Christ, but what will post-COVID missions look like? How will they change? Will they change us? Here are some spiritual questions for our church family to ask in this season: • How is the Holy Spirit moving? • Can the Spirit be tamed by our human preferences or be directed by what mere mortals think is best? (Read John 3:8) • What is the Spirit of God saying to the church? (Read Revelation 2:11) • Is the Spirit of God calling us to do new things? (Read Isaiah 43:19) Here are some spiritual questions for you, personally, to ask in this season: • How is the Holy Spirit moving in your life? • Can the Spirit be tamed by your preferences, or directed by what you think is best? (Read John 3:8) • What is the word of Christ saying to you? (Read Romans 10:17) • Is God calling you to do a new thing? (Read Isaiah 43:19) These are spiritual questions that are discerned spiritually (Read 1 Corinthians 2:13-16). To help our discernment, will you join me in prayer, listening to and studying the Scriptures, and having holy conversations? In every new season, we will receive the direction of the Holy Spirit and the peace of Christ, that is, if we remain open to new things, discern spiritually, and stay in love with God.
