JULY-AUGUST 2021

Official Newsletter of Chester United Methodist Church—www.chesterumc.org WELCOME THE DECKER FAMILY Dear Friends in Christ at Chester UMC,

This is Decker and family, soon to be your new Senior Pastor and parsonage family. We look forward to meeting each and every one as well as learning the story of the people called United Methodists at Chester UMC. I grew up on front porches, WORSHIP SCHEDULE sipping sweet tea, and listening to tale tales and yarns. Stories help us interpret where Contemporary Worship we have been and discern where God is Davis Fellowship Hall leading. I look forward to listening about 8:30 AM life around the Chester/Chesterfield County area and learning how God is Virtual Worship already at work here. Facebook & YouTube Ethan, Stephanie, Nathan, 10:00 AM I was born and raised in rural Missouri in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains between cows and railroad stops. My Traditional Worship wanderlust brought me to Virginia. I did my undergrad at Averett University. My M.Div. is from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. I also completed work Sanctuary on my Th.M. at Virginia Union and some coursework towards a MAH at Norwich 11:00 AM University. During my studies, Stephanie and I met while we both were working at Target. At our wedding, we even had our Target employee name tags on Worship By Phone display. 804-768-9594 Anytime Stephanie grew up just outside of Ashland. She recently graduated as a Registered Nurse. She has a lot of patience and forgiveness. This is good for our household, as she has to put up with Elijah, Ethan, and me. Our boys are both full of energy and excitement. If they were not enough, we also have a Pug whose name is San Diego El Diablo (St. James the Devil) and a Terrorist (I mean terrier) named Cookie Wookie Monster.

We have been blessed with almost two decades of ministry in town and rural communities from the Eastern Shore to Southside. In a miracle of grace and action of our Lord, we feel privileged to be sent to you as Pastor and family. We’re excited about exploring our relationship with God together. We look forward to being with you in our faith walk. The Creator’s hand has urged us onward, INSIDE THIS ISSUE… Christ’s heart is keeping us steadfast, and the Spirit’s flame will show us the way. We’ll be praying for you as we know you are already praying for us. WELCOME EVENT JULY 11 Welcome our new Pastor, Nathan Decker, and family!

Please join us after the 11:00 Service Sunday, July 11, for an Ice Cream Social to say “Hello” and provide an extra warm welcome to Nathan, Stephanie, Elijah (16), and Ethan Decker (13). We plan to gather on the parsonage lawn so feel free to bring a chair.

WEAR YOUR CUMC NAMETAGS! Help Pastor Nathan and his family learn names by wearing your CUMC nametag!

Need a nametag? Contact Terry in the Church Office ([email protected], 804.748.6006), indicate how you want your name to appear on the tag, and drop a check in the offering plate ($10 per nametag, payable to CUMC, Memo: Nametag).

CUMC WELCOMES DECKER FAMILY As chair of the SPRC, I wanted to take a moment to introduce our new pastor, Reverend Nathan Decker. He will be joining us the first of July and you will get to meet him in the pulpit on July 4th. He plans to move into the brick parsonage with his wife Stephanie and their two teenage sons, Elijah and Ethan.

Pastor Nathan comes to us from High Street UMC where he served for six years. He has also served at Cheriton UMC on the Eastern Shore, South Sussex Charge in Jarratt, and Ivey Memorial in Colonial Heights. He brings his experience, excitement, and love of God that he will be sharing with us. I have found him to be easy to approach, thoughtful, quick with a smile, and a gentle spirit. His boys are full of energy. Stephanie has an effortless smile and is also easy to approach. I’ve not yet met the family pets.

They come here with an attitude of “making Chester UMC home.” I look forward to getting to know the Decker family better. I hope and expect that they will find a warm and receptive congregation of the great people that make up Chester UMC. Make a point to get to know him and his family. Since he has served Ivey Memorial they are familiar with the area, but be ready to offer them suggestions and directions for the questions they may have.

In Christ, Tom Petrey, Chair Staff/Pastor-Parish Relations Committee

MUSIC NOTES Have you ever listened to the symphony of creation? It’s the summer song of birds chirping in the trees; the rustle of the wind through leaves; the gentle steps of critters in the woods; the stoic, reverent majesty of the mountains; the babbling of the brook racing over rocks and ledges; and the hushed stillness of a winter evening. “Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord…” (Psalm 96:11-12, NRSV).

When we worship, whether it’s at church, in our cars, our backyards, or even at our desks, we join with all of creation in praising the Creator! Isn’t that a powerful image?! I dare say that creation is in a constant state of worship. And so, let us be challenged to live in the same way! May each breath be an acknowledgement of the Source of that breath. May each word glorify God. May every heart beat strive to align with the rhythm of God’s heart. May each tear remind us that God is with us in the valleys and, in turn, let us offer a praise of thanks for the unfailing Presence. May each smile display the joy of the Lord.

Let us all strive to life a life of praise!

“Sing”-cerely, Wortham

CHAD’S CHALLENGES “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” 43:19

We are in a new season in the life of our church family! We would not be human if we did not experience new seasons with mixed emotions—fear and hope, anxiety and relief, sadness and celebration.

Here are a few reflections on this season: • We remember Pastor Clara (read Hebrews 13:7). We give thanks to God for her sharing of the word of God and for her faithful witness. We pray for her, her family, and her future ministry. How will our ministry evolve without her spiritual leadership? • We welcome Pastor Nathan Decker, our new lead pastor, and we welcome his family as beloved members of our very own family! Will we trust his leadership (read Hebrews 13:17)? Will we trust that God has sent him? • I have been commissioned as a provisional elder and provisional member of the Virginia Conference. What will my future service look like as I take up my cross daily and follow Jesus (read Luke 9:23)? • COVID-19 appears to be subsiding. Virtual worship continues, but what are its challenges for engaging new people and the homebound with the gospel? In-person worship and small groups are vital and vibrant, but why are they only moderately attended? • Our missions have continued as our faithful witness to the love of Christ, but what will post-COVID missions look like? How will they change? Will they change us?

Here are some spiritual questions for our church family to ask in this season: • How is the Holy Spirit moving? • Can the Spirit be tamed by our human preferences or be directed by what mere mortals think is best? (Read John 3:8) • What is the Spirit of God saying to the church? (Read Revelation 2:11) • Is the Spirit of God calling us to do new things? (Read Isaiah 43:19)

Here are some spiritual questions for you, personally, to ask in this season: • How is the Holy Spirit moving in your life? • Can the Spirit be tamed by your preferences, or directed by what you think is best? (Read John 3:8) • What is the word of Christ saying to you? (Read Romans 10:17) • Is God calling you to do a new thing? (Read Isaiah 43:19)

These are spiritual questions that are discerned spiritually (Read 1 Corinthians 2:13-16). To help our discernment, will you join me in prayer, listening to and studying the Scriptures, and having holy conversations?

In every new season, we will receive the direction of the Holy Spirit and the peace of Christ, that is, if we remain open to new things, discern spiritually, and stay in love with God.

Love and Peace,

Chad Thomas Beck Associate Pastor

TRANSITIONS—STEPHEN MINISTRY MOMENT Whether graduating from high school or college, moving to a new home or a new city, starting a or changing jobs, living life or preparing to die, you are facing change. “Change is not easy” is a phrase we’ve heard all of our lives, but what if we reframe that and ask, “how can I embrace change?” Here are few things that might be helpful during times of transition.

3-Item To-Do List. Whether the night before or upon rising in the morning, write down the three most important tasks you want to accomplish that day. Do not be tempted to write a long to-do list; only focus on three things. You’ll be amazed at the sense of accomplishment you feel at the end of the day because you prioritized what is most important to you, and you did them.

Encourage others. One of the most effective ways to help yourself during “For I know the plans I challenging times is to help someone else. It can be in the simplest of ways – words have for you,” declares of encouragement, a smile, a helping hand, prayer, or guidance. Be the encourager; you’ll be amazed how good it feels. the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to Exercise. Daily exercise brings not just physical benefits, but also cognitive, harm you, plans to give mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits. While exercising, use the time to ponder you hope and a future.” life’s deepest questions, to observe and witness nature, to talk with God, to share with a friend. The benefits of exercise are extraordinary. Make it one of the 29:11 priorities for your 3-item to-do list each day.

Find a mentor, coach, spiritual advisor, or Stephen Minister. Find someone whom you admire and respect; someone, ahead of you in the journey, that you can look up to in your career, in your marriage, in your spiritual journey, in your parenting, and in other things you encounter in life. A good coach, mentor, or Stephen Minister will help you discover that you have more potential inside you than you realize. Push yourself to be the best you that you can be.

Practice Gratitude. Talk to God. Keep a gratitude journal. Meditate. Discuss the high points of your day over dinner with friends or family. Whatever works best for you, express gratitude at some point every single day. Gratitude reframes our circumstances. It drives out discontent. It directs our attention to the good things in our lives. It brings attentiveness and intentionality. And it more appropriately positions our attitude in relation to the universe and world around us.

Ask for, and accept, help. For too long, we’ve considered asking for help to be a sign of weakness. It’s time to get rid of that notion. In fact, asking for help is a sign of strength. The person you call, text, or email will likely be thrilled that you’ve asked. One of our greatest needs as humans is to be needed, and when someone is able to help they feel needed and are honored to do so. It’s a win-win for the asker and the helper.

(Thank you to Joshua Becker, author, writer, and blogger for sharing some of the above ideas.)

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN The United Methodist Women (UMW) is to “be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.” • The Jean Craig Fellowship will meet on Monday, July 5, 6:30 PM at church, in the Atrium. We will prepare and then deliver a “Warrior Bag” to a young woman undergoing cancer treatment. • The Jean Craig Fellowship will meet on Monday, August 2, 7:00 PM at church, Room 226. We will sort supplies and pack school kits. • We welcome any women who are looking for an evening circle. Call Susan Petrey for details.

BACKPACK MINISTRY Dear Church Family, Thank you for all of your support of the Backpack Ministry. We provided food beginning in September 2019, and we just finished delivering our last bags–until next fall!! Yes, your faithfulness allowed us to continue delivering throughout last summer until now. It was a long and difficult slog through this pandemic.

When school shut down in March of 2020, CUMC delivered food to the doorsteps of the most vulnerable Curtis Elementary School families. We also provided a brown paper bag full of food with a loaf of bread on top! As children moved back to in person learning, they picked up food bags from school. We continued to deliver food to those families that chose to remain at home. CUMC has been faithful to this ministry for over 10 years, and I have to say, this year was a whopper! So, thank you, hugs, pats on the back, and mucho love to all of you who have given money, time, and donated food to this effort. You provided relief, hope, and love to those living on the fringe of life. In case you can't feel it, I'm squeezing you with a big hug–socially distanced at the moment, but not in my heart.

Carolyn Landis PS. We will not need any food donations until next fall. BROWNIE GIRL SCOUT OPPORTUNITIES Brownie Troop 925, led by Dee Fisher and sponsored by CUMC, has a limited number of openings in our troop for this fall. Girls who are going into 2nd grade and their parents are welcome to an informational meeting later this summer. We generally meet twice a month with additional activities through out the year.

Please notify Dee Fisher if you are interested so that we may keep an accurate headcount and can advise you of the meeting date.

STEWARDSHIP MINUTE Giving...Our Response to God by Bryon and Josefa Wall

Ask three people to define stewardship and you are likely to receive three different answers. However, you can be assured that each answer is related in one way. In all the ways we can define stewardship, there is one central theme and that theme is that our stewardship is a response to God’s blessings.

One way the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines stewardship is “the conducting, supervising, or managing of something.” As a community of faith, how do we express our stewardship?

Jesus teaches us to love God and to love our neighbor (Matthew 22:35-40). Our Wesleyan heritage holds this commandment as a foundation of our faith. Giving is an expression of our love for God and neighbor. Our stewardship is our management of the gifts we are blessed to receive and our response to God, the One who blesses us beyond measure.

We invite you to share examples of how you respond to God through your stewardship. We will include what you share in upcoming issues of The Chimes. Please send your responses to the Walls at [email protected]. PRESCHOOL NEWS We are preparing for our upcoming school year and are super excited to meet all of our new students. We still have spots available for any little ones, age 3 to 5, you might have in your family or ones that you know. CUMCPS is a safe and loving environment for children to prepare for school and learn about the love God has for them. I am happy to say that during our 2020-2021 school year, we implemented many new cleaning measures and they paid off! We didn't have a single illness within the school all year. We had no active cases of COVID, or even a cold, and parents helped also by keeping children home when needed. We will continue with our improved cleaning and increased hand washing to help keep everyone in our care as healthy as possible.

Please direct anyone interested in learning more about CUMCPS to Director Jen Barnes ([email protected]; 804.748.2275)

THANK YOU NOTES Congratulations, CUMC, and thank you for writing/making 137! Memorial Day cards for the veterans at McGuire Hospital. Your notes and creativity are sure to be appreciated by the patients. You are awesome! ~Barbara MacIntyre

Dear Members and Friends of CUMC, Doug and I thank you for the many cards, visits and gifts we received as we ended our ministry at CUMC. The Farewell Parade brought smiles to our face and love in our hearts. For those who came out on Father’s Day, thank you for your presence. While these past three years have had many unexpected turns in ministry and life, they have been filled with God’s presence. That I am sure about. I will continue to pray that “as you are rooted in God, may you grow in Christ and surrender yourselves to bear fruit in the Spirit.” ~Blessings, Clara

Dear Precious Tuesday Morning Prayer Group, I cannot tell you how this old mama’s heart smiled when I received your beautiful flowers. They were full of my favorites and I even took the Liatris to my garden to spread the seeds. We are still trying to process the loss of our Grady, but I’m sure that he was so greeted with all the heavenly Tuesday morning girls and my Tommy Boyd. I love you all so very much and hope you know how dear each and every one of you are to my heart! ~Love, Monta Anthony

Dear CUMC: On behalf of the McGuire VA Medical Center patients and staff, we would like to extend our appreciation to you for your donation of Memorial Day cards for our hospitalized Veterans.
