Global Compassion Movement Charter for Compassion Annual Report 2016-17 Global Compassion Movement We believe that a compassionate world is a peaceful world. We believe that a compassionate world is possible when every man, woman and child treats others as they wish to be treated-with dignity, equity and respect. We believe that all human beings are born with the capacity for compassion, and that it must be cul<vated for human beings to survive and thrive. !1 Challenge “Our world is dangerously polarized. There is a worrying imbalance of power and wealth which results in the control and dominance of a few over the many. Growing rage, malaise, aliena>on, and humilia>on have erupted in terrorist atroci>es that endanger us all. We are engaged in wars that we seem unable either to end or to win. Disputes that were secular in origin, such as the Arab-Israeli conflict, have been allowed to fester and become “holy,” and once they have been sacralized, posi>ons tend to harden and become resistant to pragma>c solu>ons. Yet we are bound together more closely than ever before through digital media. Suffering and want are no longer confined to distant, disadvantaged parts of the globe. We all face the terrifying possibility of environmental catastrophe. It has become impera>ve to apply the Golden Rule globally, ensuring that all peoples are treated as we would wish to be treated ourselves. If our communi>es, ins>tu>ons, and ethical tradi>ons fail to address this challenge, they will fail the test of our me.” ~Karen Armstrong, Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life !2 tapped, yearning to be released. Is this your first visit? Where are you from? Did you or any of your relatives work for Bethlehem Steel? INTRODUCTION Welcome to the former Bethlehem Plant of the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation. This plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation covered 1,800 acres, stretching for over 4 miles along the Lehigh River. Having begun as the Saucona Iron Company in 1857, it became the Bethlehem Iron Company in 1861 and then Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1904. Cheap foreign steel, the failure to revitalize aging plants, the cost of labor, management inefficiencies, and changing global circumstances finally brought the company to an end. Bethlehem Steel filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and was sold to International Steel Group in 2003. In the mid 2000s, the heart of the plant, app 124 acres, was sold to the Sands Corporation and other partners. After years of decline, this brown field is experiencing a renaissance … we will look at the early structures of the Steel and then at the new ArtsQuest Center, the PBS 39 facility, and the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem. In part II of this tour, called the Rise and Fall of Bethlehem Steel offered this afternoon, you will learn about the history of the Steel. The crowbar icon both represents one's ability to pry something or someone open, and well as a tool used for defense. I feel an affinity for Eastern Europe and Russia, in particular the Soviet Era, and draw much of my aesthetic from the stark, controlled climate that existed there. Like Communism, our body's own defense mechanisms are in place to restore and maintain order, but often fail us and are a disservice. My work embodies the malfunctions of the self-preservationist impulse -- when the rational or emotional mind miscalculates -- leaving us more vulnerable or susceptible to physical or emotional pain than we had calculated or intended. Sarah Tell was born and raised in San Diego, CA and currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA. She received her BA in Art Studio from UCSB in 2007. She is currently a candidate in the MFA program at San Francisco Art Institute where she studies printmaking.
