FARR WEST -- A Farr West man who is a former South Ogden police officer has been arrested on suspicion of 10 counts of sodomy of a child.

Andrew Welling, 40, has been held in Weber County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail since his Tuesday arrest, said Weber County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Mark Lowther.

The investigation by the sheriff's office is continuing, Lowther said, although further work consists largely of tying up loose ends.

He said Welling has been cooperative during interviews with the sheriff's primary child sexual abuse investigator, Detective Stephanie Tatton, but stopped short of commenting on whether a confession resulted.

The incidents involved a single victim and are alleged to have occurred "over a period of years," Lowther said. He declined to comment further.

Welling resigned from the South Ogden force in January after a little more than two years there, said South Ogden police spokeswoman Marci Edwards.

"In November of 2010, the Weber County Sheriff's Office notified South Ogden Police Department of a criminal investigation they were conducting involving Andrew Welling and he was placed on administrative leave," Edwards said in a news release.

"An internal investigation began at that time. None of the allegations occurred while he was on duty."

Welling's resignation came while the department's internal investigation was still under way, she said. Welling was hired by the department in August 2008.

Welling was arrested and booked into the county jail just after 1 a.m. Tuesday. It was not clear when formal charges would be filed or when Welling's first court appearance would take place.

A charge of sodomy of a child applies to victims younger than 14, involving circumstances short of rape.

Lowther declined to release any facts of the case that might identify the victim.
