John Keller 281-469-2686 st rd Meetings 1 and 3 Wednesday at 7:00 pm—Zaka Road Hall—9623 Zaka Road [email protected] Grand Knight Dave Lewis (DeAnn) Easter Message by Father Biju Mathew 713-628-8558 Easter always, invites us to reflect on the new life in [email protected] Deputy Grand Knight Christ. A meaningful celebration of Easter takes us into a Merv Albert (Mary Jane) deeper mediation of Three-Dimensional philosophy of our 713-899-1513 Christian journey. We clearly find the Empty Tomb; sec- [email protected] ondly, we find the Apostles’ Witness of the Resurrection; Chancellor Brian Gray (Julie) and thirdly to love and faith leading to quicker response. 832-767-9465 Finding the Empty Tomb: [email protected] - the description of the empty tomb in the gospels is a natural sign of the Financial Secretary Resurrection of Jesus. The death of Jesus was witnessed and confirmed in Larry Hogan (Barbara) 281-772-8958 various ways; and that was important, because there is no resurrection with- [email protected] out death. The resurrection can be confirmed if only death is confirmed; and Treasurer the evangelists clearly mention his burial, then the empty tomb that leads to Hugh McCrea (Theresa) affirm the resurrection. 281-370-0023 [email protected] Towards a personal experience of resurrection, it is important that we Recorder encounter the empty tomb of Christ. Mary Magdalene, initially, expressed Chuck Stancil (Terri) disappointment at the empty tomb; but the next moment her knowledge lead 281-433-3461 her to another fundamental question; where is Jesus, if he is not in the [email protected] Warden tomb! Then we find in the scriptures Peter and John witnessing the empty Eugene “Smitty” Schmidt (Paula) tomb. The experience of the empty tomb gave them a convincing answer that 713-818-3646 Jesus is Risen. To experience personal conviction of His resurrection, we all [email protected] need to visit the empty tombs of our own interiority and recognize the need Advocate Matt Maciejeski to rise - to experience the new life in Christ. The Richard Carter (Cindy) 713-253-8482 definition presented was; “Disciples habitually worship, [email protected] grow, serve, give, share their faith, live virtuously and Mike Velez build community.” What struck me about this description 832-876-2369 [email protected] is how it describes what a Knight is or should be working Trustee—1 year toward. In working with and observing my brothers at Gary Maly (Deborah) 8482 and other Councils, I see many examples of disciples. Some, perhaps, 713-857-7267 more than others. As we close in on the last days of Lent I will be thinking [email protected] about discipleship and how I can be a better disciple. From a personal view- Trustee—2 year Jim Schier (Andi) point I need to work harder on all of these attributes. But if I just picked two 832-647-8696 which need the most work, my prayer life is not nearly where it should be [email protected] and I don’t share my faith nearly as much as I should. Perhaps you also have Trustee—3 year one or two things that need more work. Lent is a perfect time to get started Fernando Flores (Dee Dee) 281-468-2854 on these. Knight of the Month - March, 2019

Jim McBane Board of Directors

President Richard Carter (Cindy)

Vice-President Bill Vacek (Mary)

Secretary Larry Hildebrand (Pat)

Jim has chaired two extremely successful events at Prince of Treasurer Peace. The first was, what we hope will be, the annual Advent John Adams (Pam) Fellowship Sonday. This was hosted in conjunction with the Vocations Mission. Jim, with Hank Walker’s help, recruited Year 2019 help from many ministries, especially Hispanic, to serve the Richard Carter (Cindy) breakfast or dinner. He recently chaired the extremely suc- Larry Hildebrand (Pat) cessful Mardi Gras dance with our co-host Catholic Daughters Matt Maciejeski of the Americas. Jim did not simply find a band and determine a ticket price but created attractive sponsorship opportunities Year 2020 which ensured the success of the night. He put together a Larry LaHaie (Melinda) team who handled all the duties with efficiency. He captured all the income and expenses and reported them immediately Smitty Schmidt (Paula) after the event. Most importantly to me as your Grand Knight, Bill Vacek (Mary)

Jim did 99% of the work only asking me to sign a letter and Year 2021 send out an email reminder. Jim helps during the week at Prince of Peace on a volunteer basis. Jim also took on the task Vince Bonura (Patricia) of chairing the Alpha program meals provided by the Knights. John Adams (Pam) He coordinated with Vince Bonura to do three Alpha meals in the fall and two in February of this year. Prince of Peace ap- proached Jim about the need to find a host for the first Fellow- ship Sonday in January. Working with Jim Vossler and Jim’s cook team the Council was able to put on a pancake breakfast.

Easter Message by Father Biju Mathew (Continued from Page 1) The Apostles Witnessing the Resurrection: - when Mary Magdalene recognized Jesus, He told her to go and tell, first to the apostles. (Jn 20:17). In the same way St Paul confirms that the Apostles were the first ones to know about the resurrection of Christ (1 Cor. 15:5). This should lead us to understand that the authenticity of Christian faith is founded on apostolic foundations. It is interesting to read from the Acts of the Apostles (1:21-22), it says, one who proclaims the resurrection of the Lord should be someone who has personally experienced Him: someone who has walked with Jesus. Our proclamation of the resurrection of Jesus is a collective witnessing and proclaiming; we join together with the Apostles and all those who went before us in proclaiming Him. Personal conviction on the Resurrec- tion of Jesus, leads to the Collective Mission and Proclamation of the Church. Expression of Love and Faith With Quick Response: - the Moment when the disciples heard about the empty tomb there was a hasty response from them. Pe- ter and John ran to the tomb. Peter is outran by John; the disciple whom Jesus loved. John doesn’t fail to ex- press his feeling that he is deeply loved by the Lord; and the love experience increases his speed to reach the tomb. From our life experience, we know one thing for sure that even when one loves equally, understanding and responding to that love by the recipients, is not the same. There are surely differences in receiving love and responding to that love. When John addresses himself as ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved’, simply means that the love of Jesus influenced him more than anyone else. That should be the only reason that he outran Peter; and it clearly shows that love leads to faith (Jn. 20:8). Now, it is for us to be deeply influenced by the love of Jesus and then convincingly to proclaim that Jesus loves me more than everyone else. Such conviction and experience will lead us to run faster to live and pro- claim the Resurrection. I wish everyone a meaningful celebration of Easter leading to a personal experience of the Resurrection of Jesus.

Grand Knight’s Report (Continued from Page 1) The month began with the Mardi Gras Dance on March 2nd. What a great night that was. Our Brother Knights and the Catholic Daughters deserve a big thank you for putting on such a fantastic event. The food was perfect, the band was great, and everyone had a good time. I am already looking forward to next year. The following Saturday, second Saturday of the month, we had a work day at the hall. Hall workdays are always the second Saturday and I ask all of you to put it on your calendar. On this day we had only 4 Knights; Bill Vacek, Richard Carter, Paul McGarraugh, and me. Richard, Paul, and I cleaned out the container to make room for the new “zero radius” lawn tractor the Home Association purchased. Our efforts contributed to Matt’s recycle pile. It was an interesting experience looking at some of the stuff that has been in that container for a very long time. Bill cut down the over-grown bushes on the north side of the building. This side of the building has a cleaner look and finishes the hard work many of us did last fall. Thank you all the brothers who showed up and worked hard. On March 23rd, Smitty brought over the new lawn tractor and used it to mow the property. He was helped by Paul who used his lawnmower to help clean up areas which couldn’t be reached by the tractor. As a result the hall looked great when Knights from across Houston arrived for the Major Degree the next morn- ing. Their efforts really helped improve the overall experience of the Knights. On March 24th we hosted a Major Degree at the hall. We had 28 men who achieved full Knighthood in our Order including our brother Bill Higgins. Congratulations to Brother Bill. The Houston Degree team did their usual fantastic job of advancing the candidates through the 2nd “Formation” and 3rd “Knighthood” de- grees. All of you who are still 1st degrees Knights plan on attending the next Major Degree. The lessons taught in both these degrees are well worth the time. For those who are already 3rd degree, especially those who have not attended the new degree format, plan on attending. I think each of us should make an effort to observe these degrees once each year. I am amazed when I am reminded of the lessons I learned during my major degree experience and often hear lessons I missed. We are fortunate that we have a dedicated team in Houston who works hard to make a perfect degree experience. (Continued on Page 8)

Saint. Benezet (French Bridge Builder) Patron of Brotherhood Saint Benezet lived between 1163 and 1184, and is known primarily for being the founder of the tradition of the bridge building brotherhood. His icons frequent- ly depict him as a shepherd boy carrying a stone. According to legend, Benezet was a shepherd who experienced a vision while watching an eclipse of the sun. In his vision, he was instructed to build a bridge over the river Rhone at . Concerned about his flock, he was told that an- gels would provide watch while he worked. Thus assured, he started to build the bridge, working alone. At first, the civil and religious authorities refused to help him. Onlookers watched as the young shepherd boy carried a stone that was much too large for a man to lift. He placed the stone and proclaimed that it would be- come the foundation, to which onlookers declared his feat of strength to be a mir- acle. As he continued working on the project, additional miracles occurred includ- ing inexplicable healings of the deaf and blind and restorations of those crippled by disease to health. The miracles convinced many that Benezet's work was ordered by God and they finally came to his aid, pledging funds and help. Thus, the first Bridge Brotherhood was formed. Bridge brotherhoods would be among the most important developments of the medieval period with many forming across Europe. The brotherhoods were intended to be temporary and dedicated to building bridges in areas that needed them. Some people took vows while they worked on the projects, knights donat- ed funds, and entire communities lent support in various forms. Several famous bridges were built by broth- erhoods, including the bridge across the Rhone at Avignon. These projects were important to the development of trade, which served as a precursor to the renais- sance in Europe. Benezet himself died in 1184, just 21 years old, two years before his bridge was completed. He was in- terred in the bridge in a tiny chapel dedicated to , the of mariners. His body re- mained there until a flood in 1669 washed out a portion of the bridge and his coffin along with it. His casket was recovered and opened, where it was found that his body was entirely uncorrupted. Benezet was recognized as a saint in the 13th century. He was reburied in the cathedral at Avignon and later the Celestine church of Saint Dider. The bridge, of which the arches still stand, is a pilgrimage site even to this day.

2019 Fish Fry’s by Tim O’Malley, Program Director The 2019 Fish Fry season is in full swing The first week was very successful and it has continued to increase over the next three weeks. The challenge of running two operations at the same time, and making them both successful, is still getting enough volunteers to work. During the last weeks of Lent we need to keep the volunteer efforts going. Help is always needed to prepare the food, cook, serve and cleanup. We will be using the Sign-Up Genius and the Web- site sign up to keep track of volunteers. We urge you to respond to the emails or go to the website to sign up. This is a FUN event to work and we look forward to a very successful year. Thank you in advance for all you do to make this happen. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call me at 281-932-6606.

In Memorium Deacon Jeffrey Michael Schmelter

Deacon Jeffrey Michael Schmelter, age 64, lost his valiant battle with lung cancer on March 23, 2019, when he passed away peacefully. God was kind enough to let his son, Ryan, and some of his close friends be with him as he took his last breath. He was born in Hobart, Indiana, on May 6, 1954, but called Houston, Texas, home for over thirty-two years.

Jeff is one of those rare people who lived, breathed and walked with God constant- ly. His love for God trumped everything, and his love for his son was right after that. He was drawn to all people and especially to what some would call to- day’s most obvious sinners - the incarcerated, the addicts, the discouraged and the downtrodden – and count- ed himself as one with them, spending his last 32 years giving back to those he identified with personally. He was a devoted father, minister, spiritual advisor, sponsor, mentor, guitarist, vocalist and friend to so many in- cluding the homeless and the stranger on the street, both of whom he enjoyed speaking to as often as possi- ble, and always with his unique sense of humor which was never far from the surface.

He was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate of the in the Archdiocese of Galveston- Houston on January 31, 2015, after completing the six year Diaconate Formation Program at St. Mary’s Seminary within the St. Thomas University educational system. Jeff accomplished this while also being employed full -time by the City of Houston within the Houston Airport System. He was a longstanding employee with them for almost 26 years, working most recently as the Party Chief of the Aviation/Planning, Design & Con- struction Group. He also dedicated tens of thousands of volunteer hours in various social ministries includ- ing Prison Ministry and 12-Step Recovery Programs. Jeff led AA meetings at Isaiah House, a halfway house within the Christian New Creation organization every Thursday night for more than 10 years where he touched the lives of over 1200 men as they transitioned back into society from prisons. At Prince of Peace Catholic Community, his home parish for over 30 years, Jeff served both the English and the Spanish speaking communities as a Deacon and was also very active in the Music Ministry before he was ordained. He was a graduate of St. Bridget Grade School and then Hobart High School as part of the Class of 1973. He was an avid sports fan and loved Notre Dame, the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears and more re- cently, the Houston Astros.

Jeff was the beloved father of Ryan Jeffrey Schmelter of Beaumont, Texas, and the seventh child of Elmer and Mary June Schmelter. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his youngest sister, Jacqueline Marie Schmelter. In addition to Ryan, Jeff is survived by ten siblings - Jerry (Shelly) Schmelter, Di- ane Hanson, Dan (Nancy) Schmelter, Jim (Rose) Schmelter, Joyce (Ed) Bennett, Rose (Charles) Parks, Patrice Mullen, Pam Mills, Mary Ellen (Doug) Perney, Jeanette (Glenn) Jones – as well as numerous loving Godchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Deacon Jeff’s family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the many special people who have assisted Jeff with so many things over the last ten months of his life’s journey, joyfully offering transportation to and from cancer treatments, clean laundry and delicious food, all topped off with deep conversations, warm fellowship and most importantly, unconditional love.

Insurance Message Update Your Beneficiaries Sometimes it is easy to overlook the simplest of things. Take, for example, the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies. If your policy was applied for and is- sued several years ago, it may very well be that the person you originally selected as the beneficiary is no longer the person you would want to receive the policy proceeds. If you bought the pol- icy when you were single, for example, you may have named your parents as beneficiaries. If you have since married, your policies should be updated to reflect your spouse as beneficiary. Maybe you’ve had children since, who are not named on the policies. Most people list a primary beneficiary, who is specifically designated as the first in priority to receive policy proceeds. We also encourage the naming of a contingent beneficiary, an alternate person designated to receive policy proceeds, usually in the event that the original beneficiary pre-deceases the insured. I routinely call all of my policyholders for annual review appointments, usually near the anniversary date of your policy – that is, the date it was originally issued. One of the matters that I’ll discuss during this review is the status of your beneficiary designations. If they need updating, and they often do, I can complete the pa- perwork during that appointment. I look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your family’s needs. Hixon Family Benefit—May 4, 2019 On November 10, 2018, while driving home from a family wedding, Joan Hixon collapsed behind the wheel of her vehicle on Beltway 8. Her husband Richard, in the passenger seat, was able to safely maneuver the car to the shoulder of the road, where he began chest compressions on his wife. Joan had suffered a massive heart attack. She has been unresponsive since that night. In the four months since the heart attack, Joan has been in ICU, lower level care in the hospital, & skilled nursing centers. Insurance only goes so far and there are certain to be other expenses on the horizon for Joan’s care which are beyond insurance coverage. Joan is still unconscious with minimal voluntary response to external stimulation. She experiences bouts of what are known as a neurological storms which are common among patients who have suffered brain damage from the lack of oxygenated blood while her heart was stopped. The storms present themselves with Joan sweating profusely, moving anxiously, looking absolutely in pain, and the left side of her body goes very rigid and flexing. There is a medication protocol to address the symptoms of anxiety, high blood pressure, and pain. Getting the nursing team to administer in the right order and in a timely manner has been a challenge and will continue to be one, especially now that Joan is in skilled nursing rather than a hospital. Knights Give Thanks by Giving Back by Doug Oldmixon, IPSD, State Historian As candidates going through our Admission Degree, we learn the importance of charity as a theological and prac- tical virtue. Charity is fundamental to what we do as Knights. More than anything else we do as Knights, charity is the most eloquent expression of the essence of our Order. Our Catholic faith teaches us to “love our neighbor as we love ourselves” and this compels us to action. There is no simpler or effective way to experience this love of neighbor than by helping persons in need. Give thanks by giving back.

Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of the Holy Family #2597 (By Diana Walker, Regent)

LADIES: Please join us for Spiritual Growth and Education! March has been a busy month for our Court – the Mardi Gras Dinner/Dance, providing meals for the Alpha meetings, and selling desserts at the KC’s Friday Fish Fry events. We hope you will be able to join us at our April meeting to see what else is on our agenda. Start saving your money and wake up that sweet tooth we will hold a Cookie Fair, on Sunday, May 5th, in the Community Center after all morning masses. If you like our desserts at the Fish Fry events, you’ll love our cookies! You will get a bag and gloves and get to pick your favorites from our awesome selections. Catholic Daughters of the Americas is the largest organization for Catholic women in the Americas and there is a very active, growing Court at Prince of Peace. Court of the Holy Family #2597 invites you to learn about an outstand- ing opportunity to foster community with other Catholic women at Prince of Peace. We offer consistent opportunities to serve others on a national, state, and local level and to nurture your spiritual life. And, we do all of that while devel- oping close friendships and having fun with one another! We invite you to join us! All women over the age of 18 are encouraged to consider membership in Court of the Holy Family. Because the 3rd Wednesday of the month falls during Holy Week, our next meeting will be April 24th at 6:30 PM in room #118 of the St. Joseph Center at Prince of Peace. We will start gathering for fellowship and snacks at 6:30 PM with the meeting starting promptly at 6:45 PM. We have adjusted the time for our meetings so that we can get everyone home a bit earlier. You are invited to join us to learn more about CDA and meet the members. For more information, please contact Diana Walker at 832-585-3241 or [email protected] Join Catholic Daughters today!
