AAU Ice Hockey Flourishes By: Keith Noll AAU Hockey Chair, Keith Noll, is pleased to report that hockey continues to grow despite the current pandemic. This has been an especially difficult year for sports, as we all know. Although many facilities are waiting for clearance to allow athletes to return to play, numerous leagues have received clearance and are now able to compete and have joined the AAU. The CHF (Collegiate Hockey Federation) has added 3 new leagues bringing the total to the AAU licensed collegiate program to 7 leagues within the CHF. The leagues will compete for the 2021 Federation Cup National Championships. In addition, several new AAU leagues across the country have been formed and are listed within this newsletter. Each of these operating leagues is following their local, city and county health department and CDC protocols for safety. We are extremely excited for the future of AAU Hockey. The players, organizations and event organizers are looking forward to play hockey again in the 2020/21 season! Good luck to everyone, stay safe and follow your local health guidelines.

Mandates, mandates, mandates, will they ever end! By: Keith Kloock Of course, it’s common knowledge that the 8U Cross-Ice mandate land prohibition against traditional Full- Ice hockey led to the creation of our first AAU ‘Real Hockey’ youth programs and leagues in 2011. Yet, even then, youth hockey organizations and associations were being warned that similar mandates at older age classifications (such as 9U and 10U) would be coming over time. Well the long-feared next phase of mandates has finally arrived, within the first locale. The 9U and 10U (Squirt-Atom) mandate has begun within the southeastern United States, requiring them to play Half-Ice 4v4. Also as expected, this has led to the long-predicted response, which is the birth of yet another AAU ‘Real Hockey’ league. To use an ancient quote from the movie Star Wars, in the words of Princess Leia: “The more you tighten your grip, … , the more star systems will slip through your fingers.” Fortunately, we find the (AAU), which believes in the bottom-up, grass-root model, rather than any top-down micromanagement concepts. AAU Hockey does NOT issue mandates, except within matters involving safety. AAU - Sports For All, Forever! AAU Ice Hockey Page 5 October 1, 2020 Season 12 - Edition 2

AAU Ice Hockey - Memberships are required for all AAU events All participants (Teams, Athletes, Players, Coaches, Assistants & Trainers) must have valid and current AAU members to participate within any AAU event (such as practices, games, tournaments & leagues). AAU Hockey - Background Checks by the AAU Hockey - National Chairperson: Keith Noll

NOTICE #1 Safety: AAU members should be aware that all AAU non-athlete members (such as Coaches, Officials and Adult Volunteers) do undergo a Mandatory Background Check. These Background-Checks are automatically performed during the Adult Non-Athlete membership- registration process and no such membership is final until the individual check has been approved.  Therefore, it is critical for all AAU Clubs (Teams) to assure that any and all team Coaches, Assistants, Trainers and Adult Volunteers must become AAU non-athlete members.  Head Coaches must assure that their Assistants, Trainers and Adult Volunteers have not merely applied but that their memberships have been approved.  Please be aware that because of the need to perform this screening process it can sometimes take several days to complete an adult membership. Please apply early. BTW, despite rumors and assertions to the contrary, this protection has been a long-standing policy and requirement of AAU within all of our sports. AAU Hockey - Athlete Protection by the AAU Hockey - National Chairperson: Keith Noll

NOTICE #2 Safety: AAU members (Athletes, Parents, Coaches and Officials) should be well aware of our AAU "ATHLETES PROTECTION GUIDELINES". These guidelines are intended to protect our Student-Athletes and Youth-Athletes from any inappropriate behaviors, suspected physical or sexual abuse, or sexual misconduct. As well as to details on the need to promptly and properly report such incidents to the correct authorities.  These Guidelines are clearly defined within Chapter 2 of our 2020 AAU Code Book on Pages 96 - 130. Parents, Coaches and all AAU Members may find this publication online at: http://image.aausports.org/codebook/codebook.pdf  These Guidelines apply to AAU members (Coaches, Event organizers, Volunteers, and Staff) as well as all AAU athletes and participants. BTW, despite rumors and assertions to the contrary, this protection has been a long-standing policy and requirement of AAU within all of our sports. AAU Ice Hockey Page 6 October 1, 2020 Season 12 - Edition 2 AAU Hockey - Coaching Education from the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) by the AAU Hockey - National Chairperson: Keith Noll

Does AAU Hockey have a coaching education program? Answer: YES, all AAU Hockey coaches and Trainers are required to participate within our Positive Coaching Alliance program. AAU certainly does require that all of our AAU Hockey coaches (including Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Trainers and Adult Volunteers) must participate within our FREE online coaching education program. Our program is administered by the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). Please remember to enter the system through the AAU national website PCA page at: https:// site3865.goalline.ca/page.php?page_id=102337. In addition, please make sure that you are already an AAU member. You’ll need your membership number in order to receive the course FREE of charge. This coaching education program is called Double-Goal Coach. A Double-Goal Coach has two primary goals: the first of these goals is of course to win, yet without the typical “Win At All Costs” mentality, which is often found elsewhere. And the second (more important) goal is to teach life lessons through sports. For the 2020-2021 season, any coach who is just arriving at AAU will likely be required to take Double-Coach course Part 1: Coaching for Winning and Life Lessons. Returning AAU coaches, who have already taken and passed Part 1, must take either Double-Coach course Part 2: Culture, Practices and Games or the Double-Goal Coach course Part 3: Developing Triple-Impact Competitors. Coaches are only required to take one such course per season. These PCA courses will take about 60 minutes (or less) to complete and are followed by a short test (maybe 90 minutes if you happen to watch all of the videos). Coaches will need an 80% or better score in order to pass. You can save your progress during the course and return to complete it later. However, it’s a very good idea to allow yourself enough time to take the entire course and test all in one setting. The test is not terribly difficult, yet it is easier when the materials are still fresh in your mind. In addition, these PCA courses are not Hockey specific. They are more about coaching in general and about changing the mindset and culture of sports Within AAU Hockey we have always been are fond of saying: “We aren’t merely trying to create just another Ice Hockey program. We’re trying to create the World Class Ice Hockey program that our athletes deserve”. AAU Ice Hockey Page 7 October 1, 2020 Season 12 - Edition 2

Future Developments While the Pandemic continues, we at RSportz have pivoted to offer online events designed to help sports continue a dialogue with their members and offer the ability to earn peer-group recognition by competing in live tournaments. We are currently working on a project, “United Through Sport” this initiative is designed to offer under 18’s competitive sport across 62 sports Federations worldwide. The IOC (International Olympic Federation), the International Paralympic Committee, Special Olympics Play Unified, and the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) are fully supporting these global games, which will take place in October with live finals in November. We are proud to be the technology partner of this exciting event.

In addition to this event, we are working with the International Schools Sports Federation to deliver an online chess tournament in October, IFMA (Muay Thai) with a fitness and shadow boxing event, e-Karate to manage a Kata tournament and some online soccer for the World Minifootball Federation. While this is a growing space, we at RSportz cannot wait to return to managing live events. RSportz continues to offer new features and stronger integration with AAU and we would be delighted to demonstrate our capabilities to you. How to Avoid Negative Thoughts in Sports by Mike Hartman | Apr 14, 2020 In sports, there is so much external pressure coming from family, coaches, the team, and ultimately yourself (at any scale). In order to approach that pressure properly and allow yourself to remain in control of the outcome, one must avoid negative thoughts. Although sports are unique for how blatant external negativity can be (you could be in a stadium with thousands of booing sports fanatics, or on a high school field with angry parents), the relationship with negativity and yourself as an athlete begins within. If you can master your relationship with yourself, those external forces that have the potential to bring you down will melt away. Internal negative thoughts come in the form of idealism, blame, and doubt. In a sport, it is easy to imagine the trophy, blame a teammate, and doubt yourself. The real game, and what it truly means to be an athlete, is the ability to combat that with your own inner strength.  Idealism can be beat by realism. Instead of seeing the trophy (it is ok to be ambitious, but don’t let the image consume you), see the next goal you are going to score, the skills you want to perfect, the running time you want to beat.  Blame can be beat by responsibility. If you miss a pass by your teammate because the pass could

have been better, don’t rush to blame the teammate. Don’t blame the screaming fans. Instead, take responsibility and prepare your reaction. How will you handle that situation next time? What skill can you work on that will allow your muscles to memorize what to do in that situation? How can you better yourself?  Doubt can be beat by pride. Instead of doubting your abilities on the field, track, court, etc… take pride in the things that you can do well and take pride in yourself for having the mental capacity to want to work on and fix some of the things that you can do better. Recognizing faults is ok and necessary when it comes to sports. But you are allowed to take pride in your strengths and ability to work on your weaknesses. That is a major part of confidence Like a skill in a sport, if you work on these daily and focus to apply them, they will become integrated into your nature. Positivity will come with ease and you will be able to support yourself and your teammates. When your internal confidence is mastered with positivity, you unknowingly begin to radiate and touch others that may need it as well, thus advancing you as a team and a force. You will become better and mentally tougher. Being equipped to face external negativity with internal positivity will allow you to focus. And like mentioned in the paragraph prior, will inevitably change the tune of those external forces. Coaches will be more understanding if they see effort, teammates will be more supportive if they feel support in return. Your athletic environment as a whole will flourish.

Fitness and Diet in Sports If you’re an athlete, diet and fitness regimen, and how you care for yourself are explicitly important. It may be something you tell yourself but it can also come from your coaches, trainers, dietitians, etc. Paying attention to what goes into your body is paramount to succeed in the world of sports. An athlete should follow the below steps rigorously if they are serious about success: Get at least 8-10 hours of sleep everyday As an athlete, you are constantly pushing your body to the limit. Rest to recover properly and build strength instead of building fatigue. You want to make the most out of your energy and need a chance to recharge. Listen to your coach Listen and stick to the fitness plan that your coaches give you. Different sports require a different set of bodily skills, but keeping in shape is universal. Remember what muscles you need to work (throw in some cardio) and continue to strengthen your body every day – and – leave room for recovery days. Eliminate soda and refined sugars from your diet. Professional athletes are special because of the care they give their body. They blow off steam once in a great while on the off-season. Alcohol and junk food will completely slow your body down and affect your body’s natural state by throwing everything off. There is no reason, as an athlete, to slow yourself down. Eat and drink to compete Eating clean and drinking PLENTY of water is just the first half of what you need to think about when it comes to diet. Athletes eat strategically. This can mean something different for everyone, and there are too many “athlete diets” out there to follow. Try to keep it simple and, again, strategic. Always eat breakfast. Eat complex carbohydrates on the nights before games and on game days (for lasting stored energy). Eat protein after a practice to rebuild strength. Take care of your injuries If something does not feel right in your body, it needs to be addressed immediately. It may be more serious than you realize. Ignoring the problem could do permanent damage. It is very important to listen to your body’s needs. AAU Ice Hockey Page 12 October 1, 2020 Season 12 - Edition 2

AAU 7U and 8U “Real Hockey” Commencing our 10th Season of AAU 7U and 8U “Real Hockey” How time flies, when we’re having fun! Although 2020-2021 is the 12th season of our AAU modern era Scholastic (High School) Hockey programs, it is only the 10th season for our bookend programs of the AAU 7U and 8U “Real Hockey” and our AAU Junior leagues, which both began during 2011-2012 season. Of course, since then AAU Hockey has expanded to include all Youth classifications, as well as Senior-Adult programs and most recently has returned to providing Collegiate Hockey (AAU Hockey’s century old roots).

What have we learned from 9 years of AAU 7U and 8U “Real Hockey”?

As detailed within our earlier editorial Cross-Ice versus Full-Ice? (see pages 7-8 at: https:// www.aauicehockey.org/pages/2020-may-newsletter), which was published within our May 2020 newsletter, we have learned from the Michigan example that when we view a long-term, real-world comparison of a bifurcated community (with roughly half of 7U & 8U athletes playing Cross-Ice and half playing Full-Ice within the same State) it is clear that the AAU “Real Hockey” players show a tremendous advantage over those players who were restricted to playing Cross-Ice only at 7U & 8U. Of course, despite the endless promises of expecting Skill Development improvements from Cross-Ice, those of us who formed the first Hockey Michigan (AAU) program for the 2011-2012 season immediately saw during Team Tryout for the following season that the “Cross-Ice only” players were lagging far behind the “Real Hockey” players. Certainly with regards to their skating skills and most especially regarding skating quickness and speed. In fact, the differences in skating abilities were so pronounced that during their initial skating sessions of the following season, many coaches found that they were forced to bifurcate their ice surface by placing former AAU “Real Hockey” players at one end of the ice while isolating the former “Cross-Ice only” players at the other end. Travel teams discovered that even those former AAU “Real Hockey” players who only participated at the house-recreational level were far advanced of the former “Cross-Ice only” players.

AAU 7U and 8U “Real Hockey” Commencing our 10th Season of AAU 7U and 8U “Real Hockey” (continued)

Why have we seen such obvious differences and why so quickly? First we should remember that both the Long-Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) and the Composite Youth Development Model (CYD) consider ages 5-9 years-old to be an important time for young athletes (both Boys and Girls) to develop their Agility and Speed. Therefore, ideally we should be focused upon the foundational skating skills during these ages. Clearly, our AAU ‘Real Hockey’ programs do not neglect physical skills (such as stickhandling, passing or shooting), yet our emphasize is placed upon skating Agility and Speed as the primary physical skills. And then lets not forget their “Love of the Game”. Here is a simple analogy (albeit a little cryptic). Would you try to teach young children higher-level mathematics like Calculus before they’ve even begun learning Algebra or simple Arithmetic? Well of course not. Similarly, would you try teaching them Shakespeare before some of the basics of the English language or even the A-B-Cs? Well, same answer and for good reasons. They have no foundation of basic tools to draw upon. We may wish to develop the next great mathematician or a literary genius (or even the next NHL superstar for that matter). Yet, first we must begin by providing them with some basic foundational tools. Those obsessed with the Cross-Ice concept at younger ages, are picking and choosing skills to emphasize (primarily stickhandling) before allowing them to develop their needed foundational skill (such as skating, which after all is the end-all, be-all of hockey). While players are still struggling to first learn basic skating skills, Cross-Ice promoters are busy putting the ‘cart before the horse’, to use an ancient cliché. Now, this is not to say that developing stickhandling skills at 7U and 8U should be out of the question. Frankly, this author spent a small fortune sending his own son to the Turcotte Stickhandling school, year after year (sometimes even 3-4 sessions per year). It’s just that these advanced skills should not be the primary focus while at 7U and 8U. In the words of a great skating coach “Can’t Skate, Can’t Play!”. Yet many of us tend to focus only upon the physical skills (aka, skating, stickhandling, shooting, passing, etc, etc). With younger athletes, we should always remember that emotional skills (such as; developing friendships, inclusion, being part of a team culture and developing their own Love of the game) are at least as important as physical skills. Ultimately it is their “love of the game” that will serve to encourage our young athletes to keep retuning to the rink and drive them to mastering the great many physical skills needed to excel within ice hockey. Gateway Empire Hockey League (GEHL) Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York & Pennsylvania

The Gateway Empire Hockey League (GEHL) is an AAU licensed beginner and intermediate Full-Ice Mite (8U) instructional league aimed at helping players learn the mechanics of the game while preparing them for the next level of Mite ice hockey. Individuals and teams: Teams may register as full squads, or, if you are a player and don't have a team to play on, you can register individually. The GEHL was created out of a need to introduce Full-Ice hockey to players at a younger age as a supplement to their current regular season. This league is geared more towards first year players who have advanced skating or stick handling skills, but are ready to kick it up a notch with Full-Ice opportunities. Whether you are a full team or an individual player, we have a spot for you! While full teams are encouraged to enter we also offer individual player entry as we recognize you may not have the chance to join a full ice mite team. Teams and individuals who have not played more than 50% of a season as a Full-Ice squad are welcome to enter. We aim to "graduate" your player or team to the NEHL (https://www.nehlhockey.com/), which is the next step up after the GEHL

Minnesota Made - Choice Hockey League

CHOICE LEAGUE OWNS TWO RINK NOW, 4 ICE SHEETS That’s right! We own two rinks. Minnesota Made Ice Center in Edina Minnesota and Minnesota Made Ice Center in St. Louis Park Minnesota. The Edina rink has two full size sheets of ice. The newly opened St. Louis Park Rink has two smaller sheets 115’ x 56’ and 136’ x 64’. Perfect for any age Skill training, 3 on 3, 4 on 4!!! MINNESOTA CHOICE AAU WINTER HOCKEY 2020-2021 In Minnesota when it comes to options for the development of your child as a hock-ey player during the winter season there are few choices. Development depends on the strength and policies of the local associa-tion. This may be good for some parents and play-ers, but is rarely a good fit for the passionate hockey families, elite or potential elite play- ers. This is due to very limited amount of ice time, shortage of quality coaches, lack of competition and especially the wide gap in ability between the top and bottom players on the same team. HOCKEY IS BEHIND - CHOICE CAN CHANGE THAT When you look at other skilled sports like gym-nastics, figure skating, or even the performing arts hockey is behind. These sports and arts identify potential elite children at a young age and start their training early. When the athlete reaches the age of 15 they are world class or are well on their way. How do they do this? By using a focused methodology and in-cluding an incredible amount of quality rep-etition. Where hockey falls short is that there is not the kind of program in place for the ath-lete that wants to or has the potential to one day become world class. Instead, most players go along without the direction they need to have a real chance to reach their goals. Then when the players reach the age of 15, they are separated over one summer through the Select 15 program. The hope is that then they can be developed into world class players. But, with the right training, these players could already be world class. Well that is the dream and the goal. CHOICE LEAGUE IS ABOUT DEVELOPMENT From Mites to Bantams the Choice league is a skill based program. The focus is on skating, edge work and stickhandling. It takes an increased level of ice time and high repeti-tion to develop the fine muscle and motor skills needed to someday achieve an elite level. Looking Forward to a great 2020 -2021 Season AAU Ice Hockey Page 19 October 1, 2020 Season 12 - Edition 2

Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League (CPJHL) http://www.cpjhl.com/ The Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League, like many leagues in , has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and will have a different look for this 2020-21 hockey season. The CPJHL has been monitoring the pandemic between the Ontario and Quebec provinces regarding the rules and regulations of returning to play hockey in a scheduled league environment. The ability for the Quebec teams and Ontario teams to play against each other will not be permitted by provincial governments. Until the rules of play for the crossover of the Ontario and Quebec teams is permitted once again, our Quebec teams will form their own schedule to play against each other in order to have a season for their recruited players. The return next season to the CPJHL will be welcomed by all. Ontario teams in the CPJHL will be following a comprehensive COVID-19 operational plan for procedures to follow to ensure a safe return to play environment. Our return to play will follow provincial and municipal governing bodies in accordance to Public Health Agency of Canada & Public Health Ontario. T he season schedule will be announced once the approval from teams facilities and Ontario Public Health has been met. AAU Ice Hockey Page 26 October 1, 2020 Season 12 - Edition 2

AAU Hockey - Collegiate Collegiate Hockey Federation (CHF) https://www.chfhockey.net/

The Collegiate Hockey Federation (CHF)

Collegiate Hockey Federation (https://www.chfhockey.net/) completed a very successful inaugural 2019-2020 season supporting 82 collegiate non-varsity hockey programs. It was started in mid-2019 by five founders with a long history in the hockey world to offer student-athletes an alternative option to participate in a forward-thinking, more dynamic non-varsity college hockey experience. The CHF started the season with four conferences, including the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference, the Empire Collegiate Hockey conference, the Upstate New York College Hockey League, and a conference of Independent teams which broke away from conferences which did not want to join us in total. We had an exciting start to our annual national tournament, called the Federation Cup, before the pandemic cut us short right after pool play which demonstrated how impactful it can be when really focused on bringing the best experience for the players.

- continued on the following page - AAU Ice Hockey Page 27 October 1, 2020 Season 12 - Edition 2

AAU Hockey - Collegiate Collegiate Hockey Federation (CHF) https://www.chfhockey.net/

We aimed to demonstrate that the CHF was a viable and exciting alternative in the world of non- varsity collegiate hockey and have been very focused on understanding what’s important to our Members. In particular, Member feedback has been very high on having the flexibility to designate a team as Tournament Bound or Non-Tournament Bound with corresponding differences in fees that are more appropriate to desired competition levels. Additionally, giving our Members a real voice in what happens, full transparency and how things get done is of prime importance and have been incorporated into our model. As a result, conferences and teams from outside the CHF have started to take notice. August was an exciting month for the CHF, and we were quite proud to announce the addition of the SECHC, SCHC, and ACCHL (DIII) which expanded our geographic coverage down the rest of the east coast and added over 50 collegiate programs to the growing CHF. We welcome all of our new Members and are excited for them to be part of our growing family which is now well over 100 collegiate non-varsity programs. While the pandemic has temporarily put a halt to collegiate hockey for the time being, as well as many other things in our lives, we’ve taken the opportunity to reflect on our inaugural season and poll our members as to what additional actions we can take on their behalf. We continue building out the structure of the CHF and expanding our all-volunteer Executive team to enable our federated model, which supports key elements of the actions and decision-making at the local levels. We are working on offering even more capabilities for our Members, which includes linking together our strategic partners from Rsportz, Gamesheet, MyHockeyRankings and Black Dog Hockey into an integrated set of tools that will be ready for the start of our season. Finally, we are working on some exciting new features to the Federation Cup that has been rescheduled to mid-April as well as looking to put on regional showcase tournaments in each of our major geographic locations for our Tournament Bound and Non-Tournament Bound teams. The CHF is really excited about offering its Members the best experience in non-varsity collegiate hockey and look forward to starting our season in January.
