The schedule of school sessions in local areas has been provided (except for Cornwall). Please e-mail [email protected] to request this information for your area if you do not have a copy or would also like information about a neighbouring area. If a date for your local school was not confirmed at the time of distribution of the school lists please contact [email protected] or the provider directly. Practices whose patients attend schools in Gloucestershire, where there is no school based service, should direct parents to Boots via the contact details above. What are the arrangements for 2, 3 and 4 year old children? Practices should call children aged 2, 3 and 4 on 31/08/2016 (born between 01/09/2011 and 31/08/2014) as per the childhood seasonal influenza vaccination programme enhanced service specification 2016/17. www.england.nhs.uk/commissioning/gp-contract/ It should be noted that in this specification there is a line that says practices are obliged to transfer data to CHIS, although this is good practice it is not a requirement for this programme. None of these children would normally be offered vaccination by any other provider unless there are exceptional circumstances, please see below. What are the arrangements for children in reception classes at school As a rule children in reception will be aged 4 on 31/08/2016 and as such are eligible to be called and vaccinated by their practice as per the childhood seasonal influenza vaccination programme enhanced service specification 2016/17 www.england.nhs.uk/commissioning/gp-contract/ School providers would only consider vaccinating reception aged children in exceptional circumstances where there is a mixed age class and not offering vaccination to children in that class who were 4 on 31/08/2016 would have a detrimental impact on the programme with regards to halting the transmission of flu. What are the arrangements for children in an at-risk group? Practices should call and recall any child from 6 months old who is in an at-risk group for flu as per the seasonal influenza and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination programme enhanced service specification 2016/17 www.england.nhs.uk/commissioning/gp-contract/. Please note that children in school years 1, 2 and 3 will also be invited by the school based provider. It is up to the parent to decide where to have their child vaccinated and consent appropriately. The schedule of school sessions in your local area (with the exception of Cornwall) has been provided to help you to decide the best time to recall children in an at-risk group. Please e-mail [email protected] to request this information for your area if you do not have a copy. Providers are not using inactivated vaccine and will refer children who are contraindicated for Fluenz back to their practice. How do I contact the provider in my area if I have a query about a specific patient? All of the provider details are on the flu pathways and listed above. Please e-mail [email protected] to request the pathway for your area if you do not have a copy. 4 What are the arrangements if a child misses their immunisation session in school? All of the providers above are able to offer a second opportunity to children who are absent from school on the day of their immunisation session. This may be a pharmacy or a community clinic. Parents should be referred to the relevant provider for details using the contact information above and on the pathways. What do we do if a parent requests immunisation of a child in years 1, 2 or 3 who is NOT in an at-risk group for flu? The parent should be referred to the appropriate school provider in the first instance. Practices can vaccinate children in this age group under the PGD, but as they are not contracted to provide this service there is no method for claiming payment for this. How is information given to practices in order to update records? This information can be found in the flu pathways and is summarised here for each provider: Provider Information transfer Boots PharmOutcomes to practice NHS net e-mail or fax (depending on whether the practice has a validated NHS net e-mail address) North Somerset Community Partnership Direct to practice Somerset Partnership, Kernow Health Via CHIS and Torbay and South Devon Are there restrictions in place on ordering Fluenz? Vaccine ordering opened on Thursday 8th September for the inactivated vaccines and ordering of LAIV opened on Wednesday 14th September. Initial ordering controls are in place for General Practice in order to support a reduction in vaccine wastage – a cap of 35% of the total eligible population for each practice has been put in place. Practices can however order over this amount and to do this should contact the ImmForm helpdesk. Are practices required to report immunisation activity to CHIS? Practices are not required to transfer data to CHIS on 2-4 year olds who are immunised against flu.     Fanfare Mount House School 2007/2008 Mount House School, Tavistock 2007/2008 Fanfare STUD Y View from the Study The view from this study this morning is one of rural beauty and timelessness. In the distance Tavistock is cloaked in a layer of mist lying beneath a deep blue sky. Grand and ancient trees provide shape and colour to the view, which slowly evolving, would have been familiar to many generations of pupils, parents as well as headmasters in reflective mood. At my back are the stately buildings of Mount House with their own permanence and rich history, full of happy, eager youngsters. All of this seems entirely at odds with the current turmoil in financial markets and the rising sense of disquiet among many ordinary people as the implications of recent events slowly creep into our understanding. As we slowly unravel this complex trail of credit, debt and security we come to question how much of the relentless increases we have seen in our material standard of living has been built on smoke and mirrors and what will be left behind when we get back to the heart wood. The annual conference for prep school headmasters was held in Liverpool this year. As European city of culture it seemed full of life, optimism and the spirit of regeneration. What struck me most though were the fabulous older buildings around the dock area, monuments to a bygone age of corporate grandeur, wealth and permanence. The White Star building seems to say ‘Here we are. Ours is a great company and we have an enduring sense of purpose.’ Within its walls one suspects that, rather than being incentivised by share options, bonuses and short term contracts, their executives were deeply committed to the ideals and aims of the institution (misguided though some of them may have been).

    FINAL REPORT Batten Bay Bioblitz 2014 This year’s Bioblitz was held in Batten Bay, Plymouth. Surveying took place from 10am on Friday the 12th September until 2pm on Saturday the 13th September 2014. Over the course of the 24+ hours of the event, 11 timetabled, public-participation activities took place, including scientific surveys and guided walks. More than 450 people attended, including 200+ local school children, over 100 volunteer experts and enthusiasts, and 100 more families and members of the public. A total of 1027 species were recorded. Introduction A Bioblitz is a multidisciplinary survey of biodiversity in a set place at a set time. The main aim of the event is to collect a snapshot of species present in the area and ultimately, to raise public awareness of biodiversity. Figure 1: Base Camp, Mount Batten Watersports & Activities Centre. (Images MBA) Base camp (Figure 1) this year was located at the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre; an excellent outdoor education centre. We were able to make use of three separate class rooms and a marquee, as well as of the adjacent car park. The overall running of the event benefited from the great flexibility and hospitality of our host. The event was the sixth marine/coastal Bioblitz to be organised by the Marine Biological Association of the UK (MBA). This year the MBA worked in partnership with Plymouth University Marine Institute and South West Fish, both of which contributed with vital funding and support for the project overall. Funding was also provided by Aquanauts, Wild Nature Press and Mount Batten Centre, who kindly contributed rewards for a successful Crowdfunder project, thanks to many generous groups and individuals.
