This trail starts from the driveway to Northwoods School off Mirror Lake Drive.     New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Current Conditions in the Adirondack High Peaks Region Compiled on: September 23, 2011 EASTERN HIGH PEAKS WILDERNESS The Eastern High Peaks Wilderness is open to public recreation including most trails in or accessed from the Adirondack Mountain Reserve. However the following of trails remain closed: Adirondack Mountain Reserve Trails: o The first (northernmost) two cross over trails between the East River Trail and the West River Trail. NOTE: The other three cross over trails and bridges are open and must be used to travel between the East River and West River Trails. o Warden's Camp to Sawteeth Trail o Carry Trail o Warden's Camp to Haystack Trail o Haystack Brook Trail The Deer Brook Trail from Route 73 to Rooster Comb The Southside Trail from the Garden Trailhead to John's Brook Outpost The Cold Brook Trail between Lake Colden and Indian Pass. The Elk Lake Trail between the Elk Lake Trailhead and Panther Gorge. Trails that are not closed are not necessarily in good condition, trails may have heavy erosion and cobble, bridges washed out, and flooding – though blowdown has been cleared from the majority of trails. Hikers must pay close attention as many trails may not look like they had before the storm. Many trails have been rerouted to avoid heavily damaged sections and eroded drainages can be mistaken for trails. The ability to navigate with a map and compass is important. Both newly developed and previous low water crossings may not be passable due to high water conditions.

Both the North Jersey and Ramapo Chapters voted and passed the merger of the two clubs by an overwhelming majority. Now, with a stronger membership of more than 900, we will continue our tradition of beautiful hikes, interesting programs, and exciting events. We have a very full hiking schedule this summer and a “thank you” goes to all the members who have volunteered to lead a hike. Our newly formed Executive Committee is enthusiastic and ready to take on their responsibilities. If you look at the list of Chairs you will note that all the positions are filled. Our Executive Committee meetings will be interesting, to be sure. Please take time to consider the events that we are planning in the next few months: • The annual Mohonk Mountain House Day is on Saturday, Sept. 12th (rain date Sept. 13th). We will arrive at the hotel in the morning, have a choice of three levels of hikes, enjoy tea at 4 PM on the verandah, shower and change for dinner in the PETERTILGNER Health Spa, and finally, at 6 PM, have a four-course dinner in the main dining room. The cost for the day is $50 per person including tips and tax. It is our goal that all ADK CRC members stay safe throughout the crisis. Out of an abundance of caution, CRC is postponing all outings until the end of May. ADK is reaching out to Chapter Chairs to keep everyone informed about changes in activity and to receive feedback. Additionally, ADK has recently posted updated information for members on its website (ADK.org), and you may have received an email from Michael Barret with some of this information. The club has extended the closures of the Heart Lake Program Center, Johns Brook Property, and Member Services Center through May 14. ADK leadership will reassess conditions for a re-opening date at the end of April, as they are assessing the situation on a weekly basis.

First: The ADK Headquarters in Lake George has your snail mail address and the phone number (that you gave them when you joined) and if you chose to register your e-mail address with them, they have that too. You would then get periodic emails from them about activities, appeals or issues. This is only updated when you tell them to do so. Hurricane cannot change your information for you. Second: Hurricane Chapter gets our ‘snail mail’ mailing labels from ADK. So if your membership lapses, don’t expect to get anything in your snail mail from Hurricane or ADK – except maybe an appeal to re-join. (Please avoid this situation) Third: Hurricane has a ‘newsletter e-mail’ list which Leslie Shipps (our hero!) maintains. This is to get your newsletter electronically – and print it yourself.
