VALDEZ EL SENTINEL SOUTH FLORIDA | MAY 18, 2021 AT 10:00 AM The world premiere of Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru exhibit will open on October 16, 2021 at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. “Machu Pichu and the Golden Empires of Peru” is a rare exhibition kicking off its world tour here in South Florida on Oct. 16 at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. The exhibition was announced Tuesday at the museum amid a festive atmosphere with Peruvian musicians, cuisine and visual artists along with officials including Florida Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee and Peruvian Consul in Miami Martha Lizarraga Picciotti. It is the most amazing Andean gold collection that has ever traveled the world, according to the organizers. The exhibit includes a selection of 192 artifacts from royal tombs, including objects that belonged to noble Andean lords, never before seen out of Peru. One of the exhibition’s highlights is a fully intact gold attire that belonged to an emperor of the pre-Inca Chimu civilization that dates to 1300 AD. The exhibition will span the entire museum, including the galleries on both floors, for five months until March 6, 2022. Visitors will be able to sign up for a wait list to buy tickets starting Tuesday, May 18. Fixing the Acela roadbed will provide most of the benefits at much lower cost. My research center at George Mason University sponsored a systems engineering evaluation in 2019 comparing the Japanese maglev, the German Velaro D High Speed Rail and the new Amtrak French Alstom, Avelia Liberty system alternatives. The other transportation options currently available from Washington, D.C., to New York City take over three to four hours travel time vs. an estimated one hour and 15 minutes for the maglev. The Federal Railroad Administration and Maryland Department of Transportation Draft Environmental Impact Study is open for comment. I agree with the study on the need for increased high-speed-rail system capacity, just not the magnetic levitation alternative.

The suit, filed in May in Chicago federal court, accuses Jewel-Osco, the largest grocery chain in the Chicago area, of misclassifying assistant store directors as salaried employees exempt from receiving overtime pay under state and federal law. It is one of numerous lawsuits claiming grocers and retailers cut their labor costs by giving employees managerial titles even as they do mostly manual work. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Assistant store directors “spend the vast majority of their time performing the same duties as non-exempt employees, including helping customers, working the cash register, moving products, stocking shelves, setting and resetting displays, counting inventory, cleaning the store, and otherwise standing in as cashiers, stockers, or other hourly workers,” the suit alleges. It claims they don’t perform managerial duties like hiring and firing and should be classified as hourly workers eligible to receive time-and-a-half pay when they work more than 40 hours a week.
