7.014 Handout PRODUCTIVITY: THE “METABOLISM” OF ECOSYSTEMS Ecologists use the term “productivity” to refer to the process through which an assemblage of organisms (e.g. a trophic level or ecosystem assimilates carbon. Primary producers (autotrophs) do this through photosynthesis; Secondary producers (heterotrophs) do it through the assimilation of the organic carbon in their food. Remember that all organic carbon in the food web is ultimately derived from primary production. DEFINITIONS Primary Productivity: Rate of conversion of CO2 to organic carbon (photosynthesis) per unit surface area of the earth, expressed either in terns of weight of carbon, or the equivalent calories e.g., g C m-2 year-1 Kcal m-2 year-1 Primary Production: Same as primary productivity, but usually expressed for a whole ecosystem e.g., tons year-1 for a lake, cornfield, forest, etc. NET vs. GROSS: For plants: Some of the organic carbon generated in plants through photosynthesis (using solar energy) is oxidized back to CO2 (releasing energy) through the respiration of the plants – RA. Gross Primary Production: (GPP) = Total amount of CO2 reduced to organic carbon by the plants per unit time Autotrophic Respiration: (RA) = Total amount of organic carbon that is respired (oxidized to CO2) by plants per unit time Net Primary Production (NPP) = GPP – RA The amount of organic carbon produced by plants that is not consumed by their own respiration. It is the increase in the plant biomass in the absence of herbivores. For an entire ecosystem: Some of the NPP of the plants is consumed (and respired) by herbivores and decomposers and oxidized back to CO2 (RH). -

February 19, 2014 Nantahala and Pisgah NFs Assessment Aquatic Ecosystems The overall richness of North Carolina’s aquatic fauna is directly related to the geomorphology of the state, which defines the major drainage divisions and the diversity of habitats found within. There are seventeen major river basins in North Carolina. Five western basins are part of the Interior Basin (IB) and drain to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico (Hiwassee, Little Tennessee, French Broad, Watauga, and New). Parts of these five river basins are within the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests (NFs). Twelve central and eastern basins are part of the Atlantic Slope (AS) and flow to the Atlantic Ocean. Of these twelve central and eastern basins, parts of the Savannah, Broad, Catawba, and Yadkin-Pee Dee basins are within the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs. As described later in this report, the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs, for the most part, support higher elevation coldwater streams, and relatively little cool- and warmwater resources. To gain perspective on the importance of aquatic ecosystems on the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs, it is first necessary to understand their value at regional and national scales. The southeastern United States has the highest aquatic species diversity in the entire United States (Burr and Mayden 1992; Williams et al. 1993; Taylor et al. 1996; Warren et al. 2000,), with southeastern fishes comprising 62% of the United States fauna, and nearly 50% of the North American fish fauna (Burr and Mayden 1992). United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service Technical Note No: TX-PM-20-02 July 2020 A Guide on Common, Herbaceous, Hydrophytic Vegetation of Southern Texas Plant Materials Technical Note Horsetail Background: Wetlands are those lands that have saturated soils, shallow standing water or flooding during at least a portion of the growing season. These sites have soils that are saturated for at least two consecutive weeks during the growing season and support a distinct vegetation type adapted for life in saturated soil conditions. Purpose: The purpose of this Technical Note is to provide information on the use of some common wetland plants of southern Texas. The list includes plants found along the Guadalupe River around Tivoli southward to the Rio Grande River floodplain. It is not intended to be a comprehensive treatment of the wetland flora of this region. Rather it is intended to introduce to the reader the many common wetland plant species that occur in south Texas. The guide is broken down into four categories: wildlife habitat, shoreline erosion control, water quality improvement and landscaping. Each species has a brief description of its identifying features, notes on its ecology or habitat, use and its National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) assessment. For more detailed information we suggest referring to our listed references. All pictures came from the USDA Plants Data Base or the E. “Kika” de la Garza Plant Materials Center. Plants for wildlife habitat: The plants listed in this section are primarily for waterbird and waterfowl habitat as well as for fish nursery and spawning areas. -
