Value and Benefits of the Sports Industry
Value and benefits of the Sports industry Introduction Sports is an important sector of economic activity and spans medical treatment and rehabilitation, research and development, sports tourism, sales and trade of sport products, construction and maintenance of sports venues, organisation sports events, and marketing and advertising. It also creates various job and business opportunities (e.g. engineers and developers, coaches and sport doctors, sport journalists and commentators, retailers of sports goods and equipment, etc.). It is also part of the increasingly important leisure industry and as such, has broader benefits such as boosting productivity, individual and community development as well as reducing the burden of ill health on society. Additionally, it has far reaching implications on the global economy due to its close association with other sectors including education, real estate and tourism. Sports is ranked among the top mainstream activities in the economy. Value of the sports industry globally Using economic impact methodology, which are largely developed around the estimated number of spectators visiting an event from outside the local region, and the amount those visitors spend on accommodation, food and entertainment etc; the estimated size of the global sports industry was US$1.3 trillion in 2015 according to Plunkett Research Ltd. A study in 2014 by A.T. Kearney, found that the market for sports events (i.e. revenues for tickets, media rights and sponsorship) is worth close to US$80 billion. Between 2009 and 2013 there was an annual growth of 7 per cent, faster than the GDP of most countries. Moreover, the sports industry generates as much as US$700 billion annually or a 1 per cent of global GDP when sporting goods, apparel, equipment, and health and fitness spending is included. -
Strategies in Fantasy NBA Basketball
Jiachun Lu Stat 157 Angela Zhang Course Project Strategies in Fantasy NBA Basketball For this project, we will discuss a popular game among basketball fans, Fantasy NBA Basketball, and analyze various statistical related strategies applicable to the game. The strategies will involve different stages of the game play, such as drafting players, selection of free agents, as well as trading players. We will use a more efficient drafting strategies based on a model that we refer to as efficient points rather than the commonly used “O-Rank”. We will also use expected values and variances of the players’ statistics decide how to either pick or trade free agents during the season. Our final goal is to use these techniques to optimize team performance in order to win the league. Fantasy Basketball is essentially a free online game that allows players to manage their own team of NBA players upon creating an account. There are two types of major leagues, Rotisserie League and Head to Head League. For rotisserie League, there are several statistical categories such as rebounds, assists, or free throws that fantasy basketball teams are ranked on. Usually, ranks in each statistical category are then converted to corresponding points and are totaled to determine an overall score for the team. The team with the highest score naturally becomes the winner. On the other hand, in a head to head league, different fantasy teams created by different managers square off in a weekly match against each other to see which manager can compile the highest points in each of the different categories. -

Hallowed Place, Toxic Space: 'Celebrating' Steve Bartman And
. Volume 15, Issue 1 May 2018 Hallowed place, toxic space: ‘Celebrating’ Steve Bartman and Chicago Cubs’ Fan Pilgrimage Lincoln Geraghty, University of Portsmouth, UK Abstract: This paper is about travelling and exploring, assessing the historical importance of fan pilgrimages and the geographic spaces in which, and through which, fans travel to get closer to their object of fandom. But it also about how those spaces can become toxic, acting as painful reminders of the object turned bad, tragic failure and community rejection. Through a case study of the Steve Bartman incident during the 2003 National League baseball championship playoff game between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins at Wrigley Field, and an auto-ethnographic study of the physical grounds and stadium, I present ongoing research into fan tourism and sports fandom. The vitriolic reception Bartman received when he inadvertently interfered with a potentially game-winning play that might have seen the Cubs reach their first World Series since 1945 highlights toxic fan behavior familiar to many sports. However, that the seat he occupied on the night serves as an unofficial monument to that moment suggests that even in great controversy and disappointment, Cubs fans find physical space and ‘being there’ just as important to winning or celebrating success. Fans of the Cubs are open in describing themselves as the unlucky losers (e.g. not having won the World Series since 1908 until only this past season), building a fan identity defined by a so- called ‘curse’ and based on years of past failures. Therefore, what happened around the Bartman incident and the fact that his seat is a fan tourist site visited by baseball fans and Cub enthusiasts alike tells us that being a fan is not just about celebrating the good or remembering the great but also about recognizing the bad and mourning the worst. -
Addressing the Lack of Baseball Consumption Amongst
ADDRESSING THE LACK OF BASEBALL CONSUMPTION AMONGST AFRICAN AMERICANS A Dissertation by BRANDON LEIGH BROWN Submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Gregg Bennett Committee Members, George B. Cunningham John N. Singer James Petrick Head of Department, Richard B. Kreider August 2013 Major Subject: Kinesiology Copyright 2013 ABSTRACT The African American consumer represents a valuable market segment in the United States. This target market possesses both substantial purchasing power and future growth potential. Yet, baseball marketers have failed to secure the African American target market as a viable consumer base. As such, marketers should understand what factors encourage African Americans to consume sport, and what factors deter African Americans from consuming baseball. Thus, the purpose of my study was to advance the literature by investigating the factors influencing African American baseball consumption. African American participants were surveyed in order to ascertain the motivational aspects they perceived to be present (or absent) in both a favorite sport and baseball. Results suggest that African American participants believed baseball failed to contain the following motivational factors: skill, drama, aesthetic value, group entertainment, family value, escape, and cultural affiliation. Still, of the factors measured, results suggest that the factors, ‘skill’ and ‘drama’ were the two most influential factors motivating participants to consume sport. The current study utilized a set of focus group interviews to identify what factors, if any, deterred baseball consumption amongst African Americans. Results suggest two broad categories best represent the reasoning for a lack of baseball consumption: perception of baseball and socio-cultural dynamics. -
