    Curragh Camp Military Cemetery 2836 Sergeant George Lelliott 21st Lancers st (21 Empress of India's Lancers) ___________ The 21st Lancers (Empress of India's) were a cavalry regiment of the British Army, created in 1858 and amalgamated to form the 17th/21st Lancers in 1922. Perhaps its most famous engagement was the Battle of Omdurman, where Winston Churchill 4th Hussars, rode with the unit. The regiment was originally raised in Bengal by the British East India Company in 1858 as the 3rd Bengal European Light Cavalry, for service in the Indian Mutiny. As with all other "European" units of the Company, they were placed under the command of the Crown in 1858, and formally moved into the British Army in 1862, when they were designated as hussars and titled the 21st Regiment of Hussars. A detachment saw service in the 1884– 5 expedition to the Sudan, with the Light Camel Regiment. In 1897 they were redesignated as lancers, becoming the 21st Lancers, and in 1898 served in the Mahdist War in the Sudan. It was here they fought at the Battle of Omdurman, where members of the Regiment won three Victoria Crosses. That same year, the regiment was given the title 21st (Empress of India's) Lancers, being named for Queen Victoria, the Empress of India. Sergeant George Lelliott was born in 1864. He enlisted in the 14th Hussars between April 1883 and November 1886 and transferred to the 21st Lancers on 1st October 1887 with the rank of Private. The Lancers at this time were based in Colchester, Essex.

    1 The Fates of the Officers of the 9th Lancers who vanished at Messines on 31 October 1914 Introduction One of the greatest days of crisis for the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) during the Great War was 31 October 1914, when German forces, greatly superior in numbers and artillery, attempted to break through the lines defending Ypres at two important places, on the Messines ridge and along the Menin Road towards Gheluvelt.1 A German cavalry General informed his wife on the 29th that ‘If the attack is successful, the enemy line will be pierced and their situation as far as the sea will be untenable. … It could well be decisive for the northern theatre of operations’.2 Facing the brunt of the onslaught at Messines was 1st Cavalry Brigade, to which the 9th (Queen’s Royal) Lancers were attached from 2nd Cavalry Brigade.3 The Cavalry Corps, acting as infantry, was badly stretched, having to defend a line six miles in length from Kleine Zillebeke in the north to the south of Messines with far too few troops.4 The numbers on both sides to be involved on the 31st at Messines are impossible to calculate accurately. One very reliable modern account says that ‘some twelve German battalions, comprising some 6000 men, faced not much more than 900 cavalrymen’, a ratio slightly higher than the Official History’s ‘over six to one’.5 Whatever the exact figure—and ‘wastage’ on both sides in the days before has to be acknowledged—the 1st Cavalry Brigade was heavily outnumbered at Messines, with only one artillery unit, I Battery RHA, in direct support.

He also has to acknowledge, with much gratitude, the kindness and courtesy of the " Historical Section of the War Office," whose staff invariably gave him great assistance in his search through official documents for a framework for those events, in which the Regiment bore such a distinguished part during the Great War. As a traditional event, it is a sad task to have to close the Memoirs of the Regiment as an individual unit in His Majesty's Army. Both Regiments, the 13th and the 18th~have this burden to carry, but it has been immeasurably lightened by the tad and camaraderie of all ranks of both Corps since the amalgamation has taken place.

This thesis describes the process by which horsed cavalrymen were re-trained in armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) and the experiences of some of the regiments managing this change. Extensive use has been made of the oral testimonies of many of the soldiers involved, a number of whom are still living, as well as regimental and War Office archives. The reason given for the delay in cavalry mechanization, cited in some military histories, much influenced by Sir Basil Liddell Hart, was resistance from the cavalry to parting from their horses.

Trevor Wilson Bartridge Partners, Bartridge House, Umberleigh, Devon EX37 9AS, UK. Accepted 26 July, 2017; Accepted 2 October, 2017 Equines (horses, mules and donkeys) have been used in warfare for thousands of years. In Sudan, they were used in the 18th and 19th centuries in inter-tribal fighting. Their principal use in the period under review, however, was in the Egyptian/British fight against the Mahdist forces between 1884 and 1898. At least seven regular British Army cavalry Regiments served in Sudan either as horse cavalry or as part of the Camel Corps. The Egyptian Army cavalry was also present. Elements of many other regiments also served, often as individual officers on secondment or as officer seeking “adventure” away from home postings. Horses were used in the classic cavalry roles of scouting, protection of communication lines and of infantry troops as well as in direct combat. Cavalry horses were supported by other equines to provide them with feed and other supplies. Horses were used in Horse Artillery (in Sudan these were all Egyptian Army, for towing guns and in heavier artillery (as were mules) for trailing or for carrying the parts if guns were disassembled. Equines were used in general transport to supply the needs of all other fighting units.

In 1943 the war in the desert of North Africa had been brought to a successful conclusion by the allies, the axis forces had been destroyed and the last great city on the Mediterranean coast, Tunisia, had surrendered on the 13th of May 1943. As soon as the last vehicles and troops had marched through this great city in the Victory parade, the politicians and planners started scrabbling around to continue the ground war. That Europe needed to be tackled next was obvious, the Americans were keen to get on with it and Stalin was constantly pressing for the western allies to do more, pointing out at every given opportunity how hard his armies were fighting (and dying) in the cause to free the world of Fascism. It wasn’t that the Americans and British didn’t want to invade France it was more that they couldn’t. To launch an invasion of France would require a great deal of Landing Craft and even at this stage of the war there were not enough to carry the required amount of troops needed to launch an assault on France, let alone enough trained divisions available.
