Head Coach Mike Miller WWW.EIUPANTHERS.COM HEAD COACH MIKE MILLER Eastern Illinois University head coach Mike Miller has a history of turning programs around and as he enters his fourth season at the helm of the Panthers program he appears to have the fortunes of the EIU program headed in the right direction. Hired in mid-April of 2005 after five years as the associate head coach at Kansas State University, Miller has already produced two Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in his short tenure at EIU. In addition his first full recruiting class in 2006 was rated as the best in the OVC by HoopScoop.com while also ranking in the Top 100 recruiting classes nationally. The Panthers latest recruiting class was ranked second in the OVC by HoopScoop.com and 61st nationally. Among the seven new faces Miller and his staff were able to bring in among that top class were the school’s first freshman to lead the program in scoring in the NCAA Division I era in Romain Martin and only the second freshman to lead the team in rebounding as a NCAA Division I school in Ousmane Cisse. Originally from Monmouth, Illinois, Miller has always had ties to the deep tradition of basketball in the State of Illinois and surrounding region. He and his staff (all local products themselves) have emphasized getting the best talent in the area that fits their system. In 2007 they have once again accomplished that with two top recruits from Michigan and Wisconsin. Miller’s second season at EIU the Panthers progressed as a team was able to finish strong in the final month by winning five games and making a late run at the OVC Tournament. EIU finished at 10-20 mark. His first EIU team finished with a 6-21 record but the team improved over the course of the season winning five of its six games in Ohio Valley Conference play including a win over conference champion Murray State University. The Panthers again finished the season strong in 2007-08 winning three of their final four conference games including a season ending sweep over Jacksonville State and Samford. During his tenure at Kansas State, Miller helped the team improve from an 11-18 record his first season to a 17-12 mark in 2004-05. That season the Wildcats started three sophomores and a “true” freshman, and had six wins over teams that advanced to post season tournaments. During that same time frame 10 of 14 seniors who completed their eligibility earned degrees with five players earning Academic All-Big 12 honors. Miller also served as one of K-State’s top recruiters with the Wildcats having three straight Top 25 recruiting classes as named by Hoop Scoop magazine. The 2002 class was rated No. 1 in the nation. No stranger to building programs, Miller helped revitalize the program at Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State) during nine years of association with the program. He started as an assistant in 1991-92 as the Bobcats won only 7 games. The team finished above .500 his second year on the staff and went 25-7 in 1993-94 during his third season setting a school record for wins PLAYER DEVELOPMENT and a spot in the 1994 NCAA Tournament. UNDER MIKE MILLER The next season Miller was named the head coach at Texas State becoming the second youngest Division I head coach at the age of 29. Over the next six seasons as the Bobcats head man, Miller won two 22 All-Conference Picks conference championships in 1997 and 1999 and finished second in 1998. The 1997 team advanced to the NCAA Tournament by winning 2 Southland Conference Tournament MVP's the Southland Conference Tournament, Miller winning SLC Coach of the Year honors. Six players would earn Academic All-Southland Conference honors Southland.Conference. during his tenure and in 1999 Jeff Foster would be selected in the first Player.Of.The.Year. round of the NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. Miller’s teams led the Donte Mathis Southland Conference in defense five of six seasons and ranked third in the NCAA in 1999 allowing opponents to shoot only 37.3 percent Ohio.Valley.Conference. from the floor. Freshman.of.the.Year. Miller also has assistant coaching stops at Sam Houston State in Romain Martin (2007) 1991 and Western Illinois in 1990. Mike Robinson (2006) A graduate of Monmouth (IL) High School, Miller played basketball at East Texas State. He was a member of the East Texas State Jeff Foster team that won the 1984 Lone Star Conference championship. Miller graduated from East Texas State in 1987. 1999 First Round Draft Pick He and his wife, Kelly, have two sons, Matt and Joey. Design Editor and Contributing Writer: Nathan Garcia “The noblest search is the search for excellence” “T”ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER SPRING 2014 Don Coryell Executive Director STATE OF THE UNION (512) 245-2220 [email protected] Last year provided many special memories for the “T” Association and the entire athletics program. Without your support, we would have never been able to achieve what took place in 2013. Thanks to the support and commitment from 117 outstanding donors, the Association raised over $90,000 in 2013. We especially appreciate the generous contribution from the Strahan Foundation. The board of directors contributed over $67,000 on behalf of the Strahan Foundation to be used towards the construction of the Bobcat Stadium Pavilion project, currently being constructed in the southwest corner of Bobcat Stadium. We also want to thank all of our athletic alumni who purchased season tickets and joined the Bobcat Club. Don’t forget, you can get 5% off next year’s football season tickets for every new season ticket account you refer. If you refer up to 10 season ticket accounts, then you can receive 50% off of next year’s football season tickets! We hope you will share your excitement and optimism as we move forward and encourage other alumni to get involved. We would like to take this opportunity to thank a couple of our student workers, Greg Flores and Kali Danner, for their hard work and dedication to the “T” Association over the past two years. They have truly paved the way for future student workers to be successful.

Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports Volume 6, Issue 1 2010 Article 1 Scoring and Shooting Abilities of NBA Players James Piette, University of Pennsylvania Sathyanarayan Anand, University of Pennsylvania Kai Zhang, University of Pennsylvania Recommended Citation: Piette, James; Anand, Sathyanarayan; and Zhang, Kai (2010) "Scoring and Shooting Abilities of NBA Players," Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports: Vol. 6: Iss. 1, Article 1. Available at: http://www.bepress.com/jqas/vol6/iss1/1 DOI: 10.2202/1559-0410.1194 ©2010 American Statistical Association. All rights reserved. Scoring and Shooting Abilities of NBA Players James Piette, Sathyanarayan Anand, and Kai Zhang Abstract We propose two new measures for evaluating offensive ability of NBA players, using one- dimensional shooting data from three seasons beginning with the 2004-05 season. These measures improve upon currently employed shooting statistics by accounting for the varying shooting patterns of players over different distances from the basket. This variance also provides us with an intuitive metric for clustering players, wherein performance of players is calculated and compared to his cluster center as a baseline. To further improve the accuracy of our measures, we develop our own variation of smoothing and shrinkage, reducing any small sample biases and abnormalities. The first measure, SCAB or, Scoring Ability Above Baseline, measures a player's ability to score as a function of time on court. The second metric, SHTAB or Shooting Ability, calculates a player's propensity to score on a per-shot basis. Our results show that a combination of SCAB and SHTAB can be used to separate out players based on their offensive game.

In archetypoid analysis each datum is expressed as a mixture of 21 actual observations (archetypoids). Therefore, it allows us to identify not only 22 extreme athletes and teams, but also the composition of other athletes (or 23 teams) according to the archetypoid athletes, and to establish a ranking. The 24 utility of archetypoids in sports is illustrated with basketball and soccer data 25 in three scenarios. Firstly, with multivariate data, where they are compared 26 with other alternatives, showing their best results. Secondly, despite the fact 27 that functional data are common in sports (time series or trajectories), func- 28 tional data analysis has not been exploited until now, due to the sparseness 29 of functions. In the second scenario, we extend archetypoid analysis for sparse 30 functional data, furthermore showing the potential of functional data analysis 31 in sports analytics. Finally, in the third scenario, features are not available, so 32 we use proximities.
