PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Subjectivity in American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, the Body, the Grotesque, and the Child
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Glasgow Theses Service Subjectivity In American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, The Body, The Grotesque, and The Child. Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

  • Jenna Miller 2/22/12 Megadeth Megadeth Has Been A
Jenna Miller 2/22/12 Megadeth Megadeth has been a very popular thrash metal band for over 20 years. The bands, like most others, have gone through many conflicts. Unlike other bands though, Megadeth has stayed strong since the 80’s and has impacted the heavy metal culture. Megadeth has successfully released thirteen albums, which attracted both underground and mainstream fans. They also have accompanied what popular trends into their songs, which resulted in keeping the band steady and popular throughout the years. The start of the band was back in the 1980’s, where Dave Mustaine (lead singer and guitarist) joined the band Metallica in 1982. Mustaine had a drug and alcohol addiction which made him difficult to get along with. In March of 1983, his constant disagreements with vocalist, James Hetfield, caused him to get kicked out. In the summer, Mustaine meets bassist David Ellefson, and they form Megadeth with guitarist Greg Handevidt and drummer Dijon Carruthers. Because of the unorganized nature of the band and constant bickering between band members, the lineup has constantly changed throughout the years. Many believe Mustaine’s drug and alcohol addiction is to blame for this because of his constant highs and lows in his mood. The only two members, Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson, were in Megadeth when the band first started and are still currently in the 2012 line up. Megadeth's first three gigs where February 15th, 18th, and 19th, of 1984. In May of 1985, Megadeth’s first album, “Killing is My Business…And Business is Good!” was released.

  • Crowbar Symmetry in Black ENG
“Symmetry In Black” CD • LP • Digital Download European Release Date: Ma y 26 th , 2014 Hope ya’ love it slow, hard and heavy, because the rebirth of CROWBAR is upon us. Make no mistake: the massively influential merchants of sludge never went away. But as the band’s 25 th year of existence dawns and their tenth full length album is unleashed upon the world, cofounder, frontman and riff- making warhorse Kirk Windstein is determined to give the band he unapologetically calls his “baby” the total dedication it demands. The unrestrained push and relentless concentration surrounding Symmetry in Black is music to the ears - figuratively and literally – for new adherents and the legion of underground fans and fellow musicians who swore allegiance to Crowbar long ago. Symmetry in Black is the perfect album to arrive in the number ten slot of the Crowbar catalog, a penultimate achievement embodying the early sloth of doom touchstone Obedience Thru Suffering (1991), the moody dissonance of modern classic Odd Fellows Rest (1998) and the crisp thunder of the album’s predecessor, Sever the Wicked Hand (2011), with nuggets of Crowbar’s storied history sprinkled throughout. The crushing signature sound of Crowbar is at its peak on Symmetry in Black , the band’s most diverse yet cohesive release. It was coproduced with fellow New Orleans resident Duane Simoneaux, who worked on Sever the Wicked Hand and mixed by Josh Wilbur, whose diverse credits include work with Lamb Of God, Gojira and Killer Be Killed. “We needed to move our sound forward but at the same time, make sure everything stayed 100% true to who and what we are,” Windstein explains.

(collectively, “Defendants”). I. INTRODUCTION “Everybody out for my blood, everybody want my percent … They just want to take what is mine, how much more can they get.” - Sweet Revenge 1. In 2009, Chris Cornell penned these lyrics about his former Soundgarden bandmates after they unlawfully (and unsuccessfully) attempted to deprive him of his rights in connection with the valuable musical works that he created for the band. Ten years later, and after Chris’ untimely passing, these lyrics hauntingly resonate as his former bandmates, once Case 1:19-cv-25045-JEM Document 1 Entered on FLSD Docket 12/09/2019 Page 2 of 24 again, have attempted to “take what is his” – or, more aptly, to steal from his widow and minor children. This wrongful conduct shockingly started shortly after Chris’ untimely death and ultimately forced his widow, Vicky Cornell, to bring this lawsuit.

Litwack, Co-Chair Professor Waldo E. Martin, Jr., Co-Chair Professor Scott Saul Fall 2012 Abstract Gangster Boogie: Los Angeles and the Rise of Gangsta Rap, 1965-1992 by Felicia Angeja Viator Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Leon F. Litwack, Co-Chair Professor Waldo E. Martin, Jr., Co-Chair “Gangster Boogie” details the early development of hip-hop music in Los Angeles, a city that, in the 1980s, the international press labeled the “murder capital of the U.S.” The rap music most associated with the region, coined “gangsta rap,” has been regarded by scholars, cultural critics, and audiences alike as a tabloid distortion of East Coast hip-hop. The dissertation shows that this uniquely provocative genre of hip-hop was forged by Los Angeles area youth as a tool for challenging civic authorities, asserting regional pride, and exploiting the nation’s growing fascination with the ghetto underworld. Those who fashioned themselves “gangsta rappers” harnessed what was markedly difficult about life in black Los Angeles from the early 1970s through the Reagan Era––rising unemployment, project living, crime, violence, drugs, gangs, and the ever-increasing problem of police harassment––to create what would become the benchmark for contemporary hip-hop music.

  • BRENDON SMALL's GALAKTIKON: "A High Stakes Intergalactic Extreme Rock Album", His Long-Awaited Side Project Set to Release in April 2012
For Immediate Release February 20th, 2012 Metalocalypse Co-Creator Announces New Side Project: BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON BRENDON SMALL is the co-creator/ writer/ actor/ director/ producer/ of ADULT SWIM'S METALOCALYPSE television series. Brendon Small is also responsible for writing and performing all of the show's music and DETHKLOK: THE DETHALBUM and DETHALBUM II, the latter now known as the fastest-selling death metal album to date. Now, Brendon has written and produced BRENDON SMALL's GALAKTIKON: "A High Stakes Intergalactic Extreme Rock album", his long-awaited side project set to release in April 2012. The album release will coincide with the Season 4 premiere of METALOCALYPSE. Coming off of the second DETHKLOK album which was heavier and darker than the first, BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON searches for melody (in the vocal) and finds inspirations in modern black metal, Queen, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. No influence is unwelcome on this project. Brendon Small paired with DETHKLOK drummer (legendary metal drummer) Gene Hoglan (Dethklok, Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Fear Factory) and DETHKLOK bassist Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai, Mike Keneally band) and DETHKLOK engineer and mixer Ulrich Wild. “This album should be thought of as an audio comic book, an over acted chamber drama, a ridiculous premise that takes itself way too seriously all the way to the end,” states Brendon Small. BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON comes as a follow up to Brendon’s work on the chart-topping DETHKLOK albums based on METALOCALYPSE and released by Williams Street Records. DETHKLOK: THE DETHALBUM debuted at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 with over 30,000 copies sold in the first week and held the “fastest- selling death metal album to date” position originally until the follow-up, DETHALBUM II, surpassed it to break the aforementioned record with a #15 debut on the Billboard Top 200.
