STARKVILLE, Miss. - On homecoming weekend, Mississippi State looked to down a team that always give the ‘Dogs trouble, the Memphis Tigers. The home crowd went home happy as MSU held off a late Tiger surge for the 35-27 win. State scored on its second drive, covering 80 yards. Kevin Fant found Aaron Lumpkin for a 1-yard TD pass, the first score of the tight end’s career. Brent Smith made the PAT, giving MSU a 7-0 lead. Memphis answered quickly, scoing 1:29 later on Darron White’s 40-yard scamper. made the PAT. State responded with a score as time expired in the first quarter. Fant again found Lumpkin, this time for a 17-yard touchdown. Smith’s kick put MSU up 14-7. The Tigers scored just 38 seconds into the second period on a White 13-yard run to tie the score at 14. On the ensuing kickoff, Mississippi State would take the lead for good as Fred Ried took Gostkowski’s kick at the goalline and weaved his way 100 yards for the score. Smith’s point after gave State a 21-14 lead just 1:15 into the second quarter. UM scored again when Gostkowski hit a 32-yard field goal with just under three minutes remaining in the half. But the Bulldogs expanded their lead just before halftime, covering 83 yards in eight plays and closing out the drive with a Nick Turner 19-yard run to take a 28-17 lead into the locker room.
