Visit our Web Site: www.wvlo.org; E-mail: [email protected]; A Note from the Director ccording to Webster’s dictionary, the definition of the word “entertain- ing” is: amusing, enjoyable, pleasurable, hilarious, charming, humorous, Aengaging, compelling, interesting, comical and witty. While there have been many musicals written with wonderful, heartfelt, and loving messages, “Crazy For You” has just one message; to be entertaining. There is no major underlying message here other than the creators of this musical just wanted the audience to sit back in the theater and be taken away for a couple of hours from their hectic lives. This musical has the music and lyrics written by the incredible and talented duo of George and Ira Gershwin. Today, where are songs like: “I’ll Build A Staircase To Paradise”, “Embraceable You”, “Bidin’ My Time”, “Slap That Bass”, “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”, “Someone To Watch Over Me”, “Nice Work If You Can Get it” and “I Got Rhythm”, just to name a few? Well, this is what you’re about to hear! So let us take you on a journey where the plot is simple, but the music and lyrics have been memorable for decades. We, the staff, crew and cast are Crazy For You to have a fun time!! Enjoy, —Bill Starr HELP US “GET THE WORD OUT” If you participate in Facebook, please spread the word about our musical productions. “Like us” on Facebook (we already have a page there for WVLO) so we invite you to become a partner with us in publicizing our musicals and encouraging others to attend. • Crazy for You
CRAZY FOR YOU THE NEW GERSHWIN® MUSICAL Music and Lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin; Book by Ken Ludwig. Co- conception by Ken Ludwig and Mike Ockrent. Inspired by material by Guy Bolton and John McGowan. Originally produced on Broadway by Roger Horchow and Elizabeth Williams THE STORY ACT ONE It is backstage at the Zangler Theater in New York City in the 1930s during a performance of the "Zangler Follies." Impresario Bela Zangler is in love with Tess, his Dance Director but since Zangler is married, Tess rejects his advances. Also back stage is Bobby Child, heir to a wealthy banking family, who yearns to be in show- business. Bobby talks Zangler into letting him audition on the spot, but the audition is not a success. Outside the theatre, Bobby is accosted by Irene, his wealthy fiancée, whom he doesn't want to marry, then by his mother, who insists that he go to Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on a property. Bobby escapes the argument by conjuring up the Follies Girls. When he returns to reality, he chooses Deadrock over Irene and hurries off to Grand Central station and for Deadrock. Deadrock is a has-been mining town where the only woman in town is Polly Baker, a feisty postmistress. Her father, Everett, owns the Gaiety Theater that has now gone to seed. Everett has received a letter from New York stating that a banker named Bobby Child has been sent to foreclose on the theatre as the mortgage payments have not been made. Polly vows that if she ever meets this "Bobby Child "she'll do "something ugly".

  • Fascinating Rhythm”—Fred and Adele Astaire; George Gershwin, Piano (1926) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Kathleen Riley (Guest Post)*
“Fascinating Rhythm”—Fred and Adele Astaire; George Gershwin, piano (1926) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Kathleen Riley (guest post)* George Gerswhin Fred Astaire Adele Astaire In 1927 George Gershwin told an interviewer that, in order to achieve truth or authenticity, music “must repeat the thoughts and aspirations of the people and the time.” “My people are Americans,” he said, “My time is today.” In London the previous year, Gershwin and the stars of “Lady, Be Good!,” Fred and Adele Astaire, made a recording of “Fascinating Rhythm,” a song that seemed boldly to proclaim its modernity and its Americanness. Nearly a century after its composition we can still hear the very things playwright S.N. Behrman experienced the moment Gershwin sat down at a party to play the piano: “the newness, the humor, above all the rush of the great heady surf of vitality.” What is also discernible in the 1926 recording--in Gershwin’s opening flourish on the piano and in the 16-bar verse sung by the Astaires--is the gathering momentum of a steam locomotive, a hypnotic, hurtling movement into the future. Born in 1898 and 1899 respectively, George Gershwin and Fred Astaire were manifestly children of the Machine Age. Astaire was born deep in the Midwest, in Omaha, Nebraska, where his earliest memory was “the rumbling of the locomotives in the distance as engines switched freight cars in the evening when we sat on the front porch and also after I went to bed. That and the railway whistles in the night, going someplace.

  • Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre
Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre Women The repertoire suggestions below target specific developmental goals. It is important to keep in mind however that the distinguishing characteristic of musical theatre singing is the variability of tonal resonance within any given song. A predominantly soprano song might suddenly launch into a belt moment. A chest dominant ballad may release into a tender soprano. Story always pre-empts musical choices. “Just You Wait” from My Fair Lady is part of the soprano canon but we would be disappointed if Eliza could not tell Henry Higgins what she really felt. In order to make things easier for beginning students, it’s a good idea to find repertoire with targeted range and consistent quality as students develop skill in coordinating registration. Soprano Mix—Beginner, Teens to Young Adult Examples of songs to help young sopranos begin to feel functionally confident and enthusiastic about characters and repertoire. Five New York theatre stars will make the trip to Alberta in October to begin rehearsals. He will play Hades, the role he originated in the Off-Broadway production last year. Another Hadestown alumna, Amber Gray, who will play Persephone, comes to the Citadel after appearing as Hélène Kuragina in the much-acclaimed Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, a performance that garnered a 2017 Theatre World Award.
