Nicknaming of individual athletes and sports teams is a multifaceted phenomenon the analysis of which reveals numerous reasons for choosing a particular name or nickname. The practice of nicknaming has become so embedded in the concept of sport that it requires exceptional attention by those who create these labels. The goal of this research was to analyse the semantic structure of boxers’ nicknames, i.e. the possible principles of their formation. To realize the research aims 378 male boxers’ nicknames, predominantly in the English language, were collected. The nicknames were allocated to semantic categories according to the content area or areas they referred to. Counts and percentages were calculated for the nicknames in each subsample created with regard to the number of semantic categories used to create a boxer’s nickname and for the group of nicknames allocated to the miscellaneous group. Counts were calculated for all groups within each subsample. Key words: hero, association, figurative language, figures of speech 1. Name: Michael Watson Career Record: click Nationality: United Kingdom Birthplace: London, England Hometown: Islington, London, United Kingdom Born: 1965-03-15 Stance: Orthodox Height: 5′ 11″ Manager: Mickey Duff Michael Watson (born March 15, 1965) is a former boxer from England. Born in London, he is a resident of Islington. Although he did not become a world champion, many in England see him as a hero. Watson debuted professionally as a boxer on October 16, 1984, beating Winston Wray by a knockout in round four in London. The great majority of his fights were fought in London, and only one of his fights was outside England. Watson rose quickly though the WBO Middleweight ranks, building a record of 18 wins, 1 loss and one draw before venturing for the first and only time outside his native soil. During that 20 fight span, he beat such notables as Don Lee and Ricky Stackhouse. Then, he went to Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, where he would fight to a two round technical draw (tie) with Israel Cole. Three wins followed, and then, Watson faced future world champion Nigel Benn for the British Commonwealth Middleweight title. In what would turn out to be his biggest career win, he defeated Benn by knockout in round six, on May 21, 1989. On April 14, 1990, he received his first world title try, when he challenged WBA world champion Mike McCallum, losing by a twelve round decision. After three more wins, he was given a second world title try, on June 22, 1991, against WBO world champion Chris Eubank.

  • Tyson to Unleash Fury on Two-Time World Title Challenger
TYSON TO UNLEASH FURY ON TWO- TIME WORLD TITLE CHALLENGER TYSON FURY will face two-time world heavyweight title challenger Francesco Pianeta in his second comeback fight next month. The lineal heavyweight champion will face the 6ft 5in Italian on Frank Warren’s blockbuster open air show at Belfast’s Windsor Park on Saturday August 18, which is live on BT Sport. Fury, 29, ended a lay off of more than two and half years last month when Sefer Seferi retired on his stool after four rounds and southpaw Pianeta is a step up in class for the Manchester man. German based Pianeta (35-4-1) has 21 knockout wins on his record, but fell short in world championship challenges against Wladimir Klitschko and Ruslan Chagaev. Warren said: “The Seferi fight is history and Pianeta is a far better operator than him. His level of opposition tells you that. “Tyson had been out of boxing for a long time and Pianeta is a good opponent for what is Tyson’s second fight back after his break. “Tyson had a short rest after Seferi, but is back in full time camp ready for this challenge in Belfast. “He needs rounds under his belt before moving on to the next level and this fight will do that and make him work for his win.” Pianeta, 33, is a former WBO European and EBU EU champion and knows beating Fury will put him in line for another world title fight. Hall of Fame promoter Warren added: “I am sure Pianeta will get into the Belfast ring desperate to upset Tyson.” Fury (26-0) became the world’s premier heavyweight and Ring Magazine champion when he took the IBF, WBA and WBO belts from Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015 – becoming the first man to defeat the Ukrainian great in more than 11 years.
