Robert Crown Cleanup A Success By Travis Johnston, North Scout Sertoma Club President

All Scouters know about Sand Hill Scout Reservation and Camp Soule, but many do not know about the 18 acre Camp Robert Crown in Pasco County. The property was acquired by the West Central Florida Council in 1985. Plans were made to turn this property into a “Scout Sea Base” but were cut short due to county zoning requirements. After years of the property sitting vacant, the property became a hot spot for vagrants and partiers leaving behind trash—and lots of it. Since zoning requirements would keep us from ever building this property into a Scout camp, it was then decided by the council Executive board to sell the property. The property would be sold to the Pasco County Environmental Lands Department. In order for the property to be considered “Environmental Property”, it had to be free of all trash and debris. That’s where we came in the picture.

On July 17 th , sixteen members of Timuquan Lodge and the North Scout Sertoma Club showed up to lend a hand to the large scale cleanup of WCFC’s Camp Robert Crown. It was a very hot July day but we still managed to get the property cleaned up. All in all 40 yards of trash were removed and over 115 hours of service were given. A special thanks goes out to Danny Echols of Better Than Dirt, who supplied the 40 yard dumpster and picked up debris all day with his large track hoe machine.

The county says immediate plans for the property include fencing off the entire property and eradicating the invasive Brazilian Pepper Trees. Later on down the road plans include a shelter, and having a boardwalk going thru the prop- erty, connecting it to the Robert Crown Wilderness area.
