CHARMELLE J. ACKINS PAMELA GARDNER WHAT IS A HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY?

According to the Higher Education Act of 1965 which expanded federal funding for colleges and universities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are defined as institutions of higher education established before 1964 whose primary focus was providing post-secondary education to black Americans (Brown, 2004). The goal of HBCU’s were to educate and train to become productive citizens. Most HBCU’s focused on teacher education while some focused on trades such as agriculture. ▪ Public, Private, Medial and Law ▪ 105 HBCUS ▪ Higher percentage of baccalaureate and graduate degrees to African Americans ▪ Alumni Networks ▪ Equal Access to All FIRST HBCU

The very first HBCUs were established before the (1861-65). The Institute for Colored Youth (African Institute) in Pennsylvania, opened on a farm outside of Philadelphia in 1837 was later renamed after its owner George Cheyney. It is known today as Cheyney University NUMBER AND LOCATION
