Now, onto today’s conversation, with a quick reminder that this is an edit of a live radio interview with Orson Scott Card, prolific novelist, best known as author of Ender’s Game, and a professor at Southern Virginia University. Whitney: In today's episode, we will be discussing just one of the seven points of personal disruption, which is embracing constraints. All too often we find ourselves saying, "If only I had more time, more money, more health, expertise. If only Oprah were my fairy godmother, I could get something done." And yet, when we take a moment to examine the role constraints play in the creative process and in our lives, we frequently find that they aren't a check on absolute freedom, but a tool of creation. With me to discuss this topic today is Orson Scott Card, an American novelist who has authored 70, that's 7-0, books and counting, best known for his work in science fiction.

These books usually present the author’s view of an important truth and not infrequently send a message to the reader. Good books for discussion move the reader and stay in the mind long after the book is read and the discussion is over. These books can be read more than once, and each time we learn something new. Reading for a book discussion—whether you are the leader or simply a participant—differs from reading purely for pleasure. As you read a book chosen for a discussion, ask questions and mark down important pages you might want to refer back to. Make notes like, "Is this significant?" or "Why does the author include this?" Making notes as you go slows down your reading but gives you a better sense of what the book is really about and saves you the time of searching out important passages later. Obviously, asking questions as you go means you don't know the answer yet, and often you never do discover the answers. But during discussion of your questions, others may provide insight for you. Don't be afraid to ask hard questions because often the author is presenting difficult issues for that very purpose.

LANGLEY ROBINSON Abuses of Enchantment Winner of the Quarante Club Prize In the many variations of fairy tale narratives, elements of magic and enchantment are nearly always present in one form or another. Sleep and dream enchantments are especially prevalent, typically befalling young female protagonists as they reach the cusp of adolescence. Tales like Sleeping Beauty conjure up romantic images of virginally beautiful princesses reclining unconscious upon bowers of roses and silks. These beauties passively await the arrival of a “Prince Charming” to awaken them and carry them off to a fairy tale ending of true love and domestic bliss. In Sleeping Beauty and similar stories, the narratives play out over, around, and in several cases “onto” the unconscious princess. Her total lack of agency and awareness makes her the stereotypical passive heroine. The inaction of these so-called “heroines” does nothing to deter young girls from idolizing these princesses and dreaming of finding their own “happily ever after”.

    TEA PARTIES, FAIRY DUST, AND CULTURAL MEMORY: THE MAINTENANCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND AND PETER PAN OVER TIME Jeena Kim A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2014 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Marilyn Motz © 2014 Jeena Kim All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis considers how and why recognizable elements of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland are widely disseminated throughout present-day popular culture despite the age and relative obscurity of the literary stories on which they are based. I examine three different approaches to Alice and Peter in our contemporary moment: material culture, adaptation, and fictionalized origin stories. Using such theorists as Roland Barthes, Judith Butler, Mikhail Bakhtin, Victor Turner, Jean Baudrillard, and Michel Foucault, I argue that articulations of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland persist as access points to feelings of childhood enchantment, inspiration, and innocence, rather than just as specific texts, images, or characters that must be faithfully recreated.
