realities can be both refreshing and unsettling, and with SD 72 entering 2009 with a new Newsuperintendent and a changed Board of Education, those of us carrying on will have to adjust to an altered landscape. I am excited to be part of the new adventure and feel optimistic that the next three years will positive in many ways, both expected and unexpected.

In September, Superintendent/CEO Julie McCrae moved to Abbotsford SD and former Superintendent John Spry helpfully returned for a few months of transition. At the end of an intense selection process, the Board is truly happy to welcome Tom Longridge to the district’s most crucial leadership position; Tom be joining us in January. Our education community already know Tom as he worked here for a number of years in special needs as a district psychologist/special needs teacher, and as the vice-principal at Carihi and principal at Sayward. He left Campbell River to become the principal of West Vancouver Secondary School, but has always yearned to return “home” . I am really looking forward to working with an educator with his vision and thoughtfulness.

Last night’s elections brought more changes with Board chair George Maclagan and Trustee Ted Foster being replaced by Joyce McMann, known for her long career in CR childcare circles, and Ted Thorburn, retired middle school principal. Included on the new Board will be incumbents Warren Harle, Michele Babchuck, Daryl Hagen, Barbara Bowbrick from Sayward, and myself. Both Barbara and I were acclaimed in our respective geographic areas.

Our biggest challenge, already with us, comes with the loss of about 600 resource industry jobs in the Campbell River area; School District 72 is facing further student enrollment declines with accompanying decreases in funding and staffing. Our district has worked hard to maintain a small surplus to cushion itself against unpredictable circumstances, and the administration takes a thoughtful approach to revenue producing opportunities such as international education (we have about 50 students currently) and sale/rental of properties and facilities. We have been fortunate to have had senior administrators and Boards with both the foresight and the courage to stay ahead of the wave, but with the challenges ahead of us, we can’t afford complacency.

Readers may think that this kind of talk is meant to “soften them up” so that when the axe falls, they’ll have subtly been conditioned to expect it. That is not my intent. I only mention this in the interest of transparency and public knowledge. As I have said before, we have three thriving Island schools, and I have no reason to believe that this will change.

Finally, I thank you for the vote of confidence in once again providing me the opportunity to be acclaimed as the Quadra and Outer Islands Trustee for the next three years. I am looking forward to serving you and keeping you in the loop through my bimonthly columns. Please phone if you have questions or concerns. Until next time, Helen Moats 285 3560
