The Challenge officially starts on Saturday, May 12 with kick-off events in several cities and towns throughout the state and Chewacla State Park in Auburn. The largest event will take place at Railroad Park in Birmingham on May 12 at 9 a.m., and will feature celebrity spokesperson, Noah Galloway, a veteran of the United States Army, an extreme race competitor, and a motivational speaker who was recently a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Galloway will lead attendees on a one-mile walk around Railroad Park as a symbolic “first mile” of the 2018 challenge. This new statewide public program is presented by The University of Alabama Center for Economic Development and partnering organizations including the Alabama Trails Commission, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Lakeshore Foundation, Jefferson County Department of Health, Governor’s Commission on Physical Fitness and Sports, Alabama Beverage Association, AARP, Alabama Department of Public Health, and Alabama Obesity Task Force. The 100 Alabama Miles Challenge encourages Alabamians to get outside and enjoy physical activity at our state’s parks, nature preserves, and rivers. Participants can register at 100alabamamiles.org. They will earn electronic badges for milestones they reach and places they visit as they log their miles of activity that include, but are not limited to walking, running, swimming and hiking.

Some people have a vision to start a business. Others adapt because they’re forced to. I was the latter. I was a casual runner my whole life, but I got serious eight years ago when my mom became ill with cancer. My company was growing, my kids were littler, the days felt overwhelming. The only thing that made me forget about everything was running, so I started doing it every day. Most people think business is the fun, sexy stuff we see on TV, but success comes from the 22 things you have to do every day that nobody notices. That’s just like running. There are a lot of fans at the finish line of a marathon, but not as many between miles three and 26. My proudest running moment was my first marathon in Miami in 2009. I trained only for a few months, but I was really proud that I even finished (in 4:40). I run five miles daily, plus a long run of eight to 10 miles on Sunday. It’s hard to find the time but if I don’t, I’m more tired, I need to eat more – it affects me physically and mentally. I appeared on Dancing With the Stars this year and made it to week eight of 10 with no dance experience.

Based on exploration of the prevalent research, the article begins by assess- ing the history of military recruitment and enlistment motivation in the United States after the introduction of the draft in 1917 and after the introduction of the All-Volunteer Force (AVF) in 1973. In this section, the article discusses the role of the Army’s recruitment advertising. Based on an analysis of selected interviews with Army veterans, the second part of the article aims to clarify the different motivations for enlisting in the U.S. Army between 2001 and 2010 and to compare these motivations with the contents of the Army’s recruitment advertisements at the time. The article argues that among the different reasons for enlisting, the feeling of duty to country remained a strong motivator throughout this period. Furthermore, the article argues that there was never complete consistency between the contents of the recruitment advertisements and the soldiers’ enlistment motivation.

Truth told, after a week of wearing and tending to it conscientiously, the Apple Watch is an underwhelming experience. As a piece of hardware it sits comfortably within Apple’s infamous “Reality Distortion Field,” but it’s much less a work of coveted jewelry than the company wants us to believe. It’s bulbous, and anything but sleek. It's a black block glass that protrudes from the wrist and resembles the original iPhone. Anyone thinking this is less geeky than previous smart watches should stop drinking the Kool Aid immediately. In all respects, the device has first-generation written all over it.     DEPARTMENT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE DEPARTMENT COMMANDER Jim Grosset After being elected your Department Commander, I went to Great Falls to help with the Revitalization of District 8. I found it to be very rewarding as it was an opportunity to get out and meet face to face with Legionnaires and find out why they had not renewed. It also gave me a chance to let them know what we could do for them and they could do for us. Shortly after, I had the sad duty of attending the funeral of Past Department Commander and dear friend Ralph Gardner in Lewistown. I had the opportunity to have lunch with Governor Steve Bullock in Calgary as he was in Calgary attending the Oil and Gas show. We met the new Lt Governor of Alberta Lois Mitchell and other local dignitaries. Then it was off to Helena for the AA American Legion Baseball State Tournament. I threw out the first pitch at the first game during the opening ceremonies. It was nice to watch the youth of two countries face off in competition; I did not pick any favorites. In August I traveled to Indianapolis for the membership workshop. It was informative and we all had a good time. My membership team and I met with Dale Barnett and gave him our plan. At the end of August, many of us traveled to Baltimore for the National Convention. We stayed in a very swanky hotel and were right next to the Camden Yards Baseball Stadium, you could see the field from the hotel window.
