BalquhidderGlen with viewsof LochVoil Picturetaken by Paul Holt FROM THE MANSE

In this issueofthe Belfrythere is an afticleabout Dr Stewaxtwho wasminister at Balquhid- derin thelate 18thcentury. It is interestingto readthat his concemsabout weddings are much the sameas thosewe havetoday. In a recentarticle by a highlandminister I was remindedof dayslong ago when weddings were held in the drawing room ofth€ manse.Customs change and we welcomecouples from nearand far who makethe vows to one another,in the presenceof God, in Balquhidder Church. Then, as now, the celebrationswhich followed were often held in the villagehall. After all the hard work of the last decaderebuilding the village hall in Balquhidderit is hearteningto seeit usedforjust sucha purpose. Villagehalls ofcourse are a relativelymodem phenomena, and further back in timeit was the farm steadingwhich was usedfor the celebrations. In someparts ofthe highlandsthe dancewas held on the road - ddfins' dn rothaid In recentyears I haveattended wedding celebrationsheld in the family steading, the bam having beenspecially decomted for the oc- casion. Perhapswe havebecome too elabomtein our celebrations, perhaps the old ways are better.I doubt whetherthere was ar elabomtecercmony, or an expensivecelebration when Adam and Eve were manied. Therewere no parentsto foot the bill and no brothers, sisters, aunts, cousinsto invite. I haven't yet worked out whereAdam's sonsfound their wives, but I do believethat mar- riage is a God given ordinanceas old as creation.God simply gaveEve to Adam, and ftey were married. After "the Fall" their faults becameapparent, but they worked at their mar- riage and stayedtogether. I hope and pray that after our modemweddings, the coupleswho maketheir vows at the churchwill put at least asmuch time ard eneryyinto making their maffiagesa successas they did in planningthat one specialday Back to Dr Stewa( - perhapshe would be happytoday - couplesno longer standon the An- gus Stonein the beliefthat it will bring them good luck and fertility. For the last c€nhfy the Angus stonehas stood upright againstthe wall ofthe churchand the coupl€would haveto dery gavity to standupon its face. Which brings me 10St Angus' Day. This year it falls on Wednesday13th August. On that day we will displayingsome historic items associatedwith the churchincluding Bedell'sOld Testament(1688) in classicalIrish and 's tansliteration ofthe New Testament (first publishedin 1690).This is a rare opportunityto seethes€ items as they arenormally kept in the ba|k. At 6.00 pm therewill be a shortbilingual servicewith hlmns in English and Gaelic. Afterwardsthere will be refteshmentsavailable ard at 7.30pm we will hold the "Friends"AGM. lfyou are ableto comealong and takepart you will be mosl welcome.Beannaich dhuibh uile...
