P a g e | 1 “AN HONOURABLE ESTEEME OF THE HOLY WORDS OF GOD”: PARTICULAR BAPTIST WORSHIP IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY “I value not the Practice of all Mankind in any thing in God’s Worship, if the Word of God doth not bear witness to it” Benjamin Keach 1 In the mid-1630s, a teenager of Welsh descent by the name of William Kiffin (1616-1701), who had been orphaned as a young boy and subsequently apprenticed to a glover in London, became so depressed about his future prospects that he decided to run away from his master. It was a Sunday when he made good his escape, and in the providence of God, he happened to pass by St. Antholin’s Church, a hotbed of Puritan radicalism, where the Puritan preacher Thomas Foxley was speaking that day on “the duty of servants to masters.” Seeing a crowd of people going into the church, Kiffin decided to join them. Never having heard the plain preaching of a Puritan before, he was deeply convicted by what he heard and was convinced that Foxley’s sermon was intentionally aimed at him. Kiffin decided to go back to his master with the resolve to hear regularly “some of them they called Puritan Ministers.”2 1 The Breach Repaired in God’s Worship: or, Singing of Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, proved to be an Holy Ordinance of Jesus Christ (London, 1691), p.69. 2 William Orme, Remarkable Passages in the Life of William Kiffin (London: Burton and Smith, 1823), p.3. • Early Puritanism in the Southern and Island Colonies
Early Puritanism in the Southern and Island Colonies BY BABETTE M. LEVY Preface NE of the pleasant by-products of doing research O work is the realization of how generously help has been given when it was needed. The author owes much to many people who proved their interest in this attempt to see America's past a little more clearly. The Institute of Early American History and Culture gave two grants that enabled me to devote a sabbatical leave and a summer to direct searching of colony and church records. Librarians and archivists have been cooperative beyond the call of regular duty. Not a few scholars have read the study in whole or part to give me the benefit of their knowledge and judgment. I must mention among them Professor Josephine W, Bennett of the Hunter College English Department; Miss Madge McLain, formerly of the Hunter College Classics Department; the late Dr. William W. Rockwell, Librarian Emeritus of Union Theological Seminary, whose vast scholarship and his willingness to share it will remain with all who knew him as long as they have memories; Professor Matthew Spinka of the Hartford Theological Sem- inary; and my mother, who did not allow illness to keep her from listening attentively and critically as I read to her chapter after chapter. All students who are interested 7O AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY in problems concerning the early churches along the Atlantic seaboard and the occupants of their pulpits are indebted to the labors of Dr. Frederick Lewis Weis and his invaluable compendiums on the clergymen and parishes of the various colonies.

r CHAPTER 4 THE 18TH-CENTURY SCOTTISH SERMON: bk)DES OF RHETORIC B ýý 18f G Z c9. ;CJ . 'f 259. TILE 18TH-CENTURY SCOTT ISi1 SERMON: )JODES OF RHETORIC Now-a-days, a play, a real or fictitious history, or a romance, however incredible and however un- important the subject may be with regard to the beat interests of men, and though only calculated to tickle a volatile fancy, arcImore valued than the best religious treatise .... This statement in the preface to a Scottish Evangelical tract of the 1770s assembles very clearly the reaction in Evangelical circles to contemporary trends in 18th-century Scottish letters, The movement in favour of a less concen- trated form of religion and the attractions of the new vogue for elegant and melodic sermons were regarded by the majority of Evangelicals as perilous innovations. From the 1750s onwards, the most important task facing Moderate sermon- writers was how to blend the newly-admired concepts of fine feeling and aesthetic taste with a modicum of religious teaching. The writers of Evangelical sermons, on the other hand, remained faithful to the need to restate the familiar tenets of doctrinal faith, often to the exclusion of all else. The Evangelicals regarded the way in which Moderate divines courted fine feeling in their pulpits as both regrettable and ominous. In some quarters, it even assumed the character of a possible harbinger of doom for Scottish prosperity. This reaction on the part of the Evangelicals accounts for the frequent 'alarms' published in connexion with religious topics in 18th-century Scotland.

FIFTY years ago, on Sunday evening, August 5th, 1906, I first gave an address in the open air. I can well remember the occasion, and can still picture the scene in my mind. I stood upon a chair just outside the door of Hillsborough National Schools, Sheffield. My knees felt weak, my tongue was dry, and my heart beat violently. I t was, I think, the very first occasion I had spoken a Christian message. At any rate, it was the first occasion I had spoken in the open air. 258 The Gospel Magadne If my memory serves me rightly, I was but one of several young men who gave a short word.

E NDORS E M E NTS “Some of us who fell in love with John Owen’s writings did so, to some significant measure, because of the enthusiastic endorsement given by Sinclair Ferguson. For me, after more than thirty-five years of gospel ministry, it would be difficult to exaggerate the impor- tance of Owen’s theological and pastoral insights. But we have long been in need of an updated biography—not simply one that narrates the significant details of his life, but one that analyzes the contours of his theological insights and how they shaped and defined him. And no one is better placed to do that than Sinclair Ferguson. I suspect that many of us, when engaging in word-association, pro- vide the name ‘Ferguson’ when ‘John Owen’ is mentioned. “I cannot overstate the importance of this volume. I fully expect it to become a best-seller among those who appreciate Owen—and deservedly so.” —Derek W.H. Thomas Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia S.C. Robert Strong Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology Reformed Theological Seminary, Atlanta “This is now the prime book I will be recommending on John Owen. I am very impressed, but not surprised: Sinclair Ferguson has so imbibed the spirit of Owen that he conveys the thought and heart of the great man with limpid clarity. This means that this book is far more than an introduction to Owen; it is at the same time a rich and deeply affecting meditation on communion with our glorious, triune God. Here is a feast of angel’s food.” —Michael Reeves Director of Union and Senior Lecturer Wales Evangelical School of Theology, Bridgend, Wales “Let me begin by echoing Sinclair Ferguson’s own story: John Owen, more than any other theologian of the past, has pro- foundly shaped my vision of the triune God and what it means to live in the wonder of the gospel.

TT will be well to take the heraldry in the manor house d first, treating it chronologically, and commencing with the shields in the glass of the alcoved window at the west end of the north or exterior side of the hall. This window, or rather windows, forming the front and sides of the alcove, had their upper portion filled with a very fine series of twenty-four shields of armes, of which, however, one is quite gone. These are arranged in two rows, but without any definite order. The character of the heraldry and the style of drawing would enable us to determine very closely the date of the glass, even with- out the aid of the exact date given on the inscription ; and that they were specially for the glorification of the house of Hastings, and to commemorate its descent from the ancient owners of this manor, and apparently to show the relationship of the builder of this house, the Hon. Sir Francis Hastings, to several Knights of the Garter. But the glory was soon to be obscured, and this fair manor was to pass away from their descendants into the hands of strangers and aliens in blood. Beginning with the shields on the west side, and taking first the upper, then the lower, row, we will examine the centre and east side in the same manner.
