McGILL TEAM RECORD Overall 23-12 Exhibition 8-3 Conference 11-9 Post-Season 4-0 2019-20 Martlet's SEASON RECAP

Road To Nationals: McGill finished second in the five-team RSEQ conference with an 11-5- 4 record, six points behind division-leading Concordia (15-3-2). In the semifinals, the Martlets swept third-place Ottawa (11-7-2) series, winning 3-1 and 3-0. Meanwhile, the fourth-place Carabins (9-6-5) upset Concordia 2-1 in their semifinal series, setting up the final showdown with McGill.

Turning The Tables: McGill swept the (4-2 and 4-1) to win the best- of-three Quebec university title and claim the Dr. Ed Enos Cup as champions of the RSEQ conference... It was their first Quebec banner in three years and the 15th league title overall... It was also McGill’s first-ever title won at the home of the Carabins, who defeated the Mart- lets in last year’s league championship series at McConnell Arena and have been crowned league champions four times, all on McGill ice... Both teams could cross paths again at the U SPORTS Final Eight national championship, a three-game tournament in Charlottetown, March 12-15. McGill will be ranked among the top four as one of four league champions across the country. The Carabins will be seeded among the bottom four as a league finalist.

McGill At Nationals: The Martlets will take a 23-12 overall record -- and a six-game win streak -- into the national championship... They have qualified for the nationals 19 times in the 24 years since the women’s hockey championship was inaugurated in 1997... The Martlets have reached the tourney final 10 times, winning four gold medals and six silvers, to go along with five bronzes... Last year, McGill was seeded fifth at nationals and surprised the pundits by reaching the gold medal game, where they suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Guelph. The Carabins went into the tourney seeded second and finished with a bronze... A team from the RSEQ conference had medaled at nationals in each of the past 14 years, collecting six gold medals, seven silvers and five bronzes during that span... Since the inaugural tourney in 1997, teams from the Quebec conference have combined to win eight gold medals, nine silvers and 10 bronzes... Quebec based teams to win the national championship include: Concordia (1998, 1999), McGill (2008, 2009, 2011, 2014) and Montreal (2013, 2016).

Roster Rap: McGill has a veteran 25-member roster that features five freshmen, two soph- omores, six juniors and 12 seniors... The lineup is composed of eight players from Quebec, eight from , four from , plus one apiece from Alberta, New Bruns- wick, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and one American from California... Looking at their academic programs, nine are enrolled in the faculty of Science (including one majoring in neuroscience), four in Education, three in Engineering, two in Management and seven in Arts.

Mr. Smith Goes To Town: Bench boss Peter Smith returns to Charlottetown with the Martlets for the second straight year... Smith is in his 20th season at McGill, where he has coached in 796 games and owns a 534-229-33 record overall. A native of Lachine, Que., Smith is a McGill physical education grad (B.Ed and Masters in Sports Psychology), where he was captain of the varsity swim team.

Powerful Play: One of the keys to success this season has been on special teams... McGill led the Quebec league in both power-play (22.7%) and penalty-killing (89.8%)... Over the 20-game regular season, McGill scored 34 per cent of their goals on special teams (18/53), leading the league in both power-play (15) and shorthanded (3) goals.

6 Getting Offence From Defence: Another key to success this season has been a significant increase of scoring from a large and mobile defensive corps... Of McGill’s 53 goals scored in regular-season play, six came from the blue-line... That was their highest offensive output from the defence in six years, dating back to the 2014-15 season when they had 11 goals from the back end. The rearguards only scored twice last season, preceded in previous campaigns by three, one and two... This year’s set of imposing blue-liners is the team’s tallest group ever and they measure 5-11, 5-10, 5-7, 5-7, 5-6, 5-6, 5-4 and 5-3.

League Laureates: Five members of the McGill women's hockey team were among the honorees as the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec announced their laureates for the 2019-20 season... Team captain Emilia Cotter, merited the league's Leadership & Commu- nity Service Award, while goaltender Tricia Deguire and forward Jade Downie-Landry both earned first-team all-star status. Forward Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que., and rearguard Kate Devries of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., received second team honours.

Welcome Back Cotter: McGill’s Emilia Cotter (pronounced ah-MEELY-ah) is a native of Toronto and in her second year as team captain. This is her second “kick at the can” in Char- lottetown, after leading the team to a silver-medal finish last year. One of five graduating seniors, she is a fifth-year science student, majoring in kinesiology. The 5-foot-7 defenceman has scored a career-best eight goals and 13 points in 35 games this season. She has a career total of 12 goals and 46 points in 178 games... She won the Quebec league’s Leadership & Community Service Award.

In Tricia We Trust: The backbone of McGill’s success is veteran Tricia DeGuire, a 5-foot-8 goaltender from Sherbrooke, Que., a nationally-carded athlete who has attended numerous Team camps and tournaments. The kinesiology senior is a three-time all-star who enters the nationals with an overall career record of 76-48-1 and 26 shutouts in 129 games, with a 1.89 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. This season, she led the league in every goaltending category but wins... In 28 contests overall, she has posted an 18- 10 record overall, with seven shutouts, a 1.64 GAA and a .936 save percentage.

Jade Is The Colour Of Money: McGill’s offence is sparked by senior Jade Downie-Landry, a two-time all-star forward who was voted as the league’s player of the year last season. The 5-foot-9 centre enters the nationals with 24 goals and 45 points in 30 games overall this season. Over her four years at McGill, the psychology senior has an impressive 73-89-162 record in 136 games overall.

Seniors Saying Sayonara: McGill has a dozen seniors on this squad but only five are ex- pected to be wearing their school colours on the ice for the last time. They include four fifth-year veterans, namely team captain Emilia Cotter (BSc, Kinesiology), alternate captains Shana Walker (BSc, Anatomy & Cellular Biology) and Nicole Howlett (BA, Psychology), plus Zoe Todd (BSc, Anatomy & Cellular Biology). The other graduating senior is Olivia Ramos, a fourth-year English major.. 2019-20 MCGILL OVERALL SEASON COMPARISON (PRIOR TO NATIONALS)

TRICIA DEGUIRE

Fourth Year (Elig. 4) Science (Kinesiology) Sherbrooke, QC Peter Smith • Head Coach

Peter Smith, a native of Lachine, Que., is in his 20th season behind the McGill bench in 2019-20. He guided the Martlets to an 11-5-4 second-place finish this season, a four-game playoff sweep -- over third-place Ottawa and fourth-place Montreal -- and enters the nationals with a 23-12 record overall.

Smith is the winningest women's hockey coach in McGill history and one of only three Canadian university women's hockey coaches to reach the 500-win plateau. He heads into the 2020 Final Eight national championship with a career record of 534-229-33 in 796 games overall (.671) behind the McGill bench. In regular season play, he owns a 276-70-11 record in 357 contests (.789).

Smith was appointed head coach at McGill University in 1999 and took a one-year sabbatical in 2009-10 to serve as an assistant coach with the gold-medal winning Canadian Olympic women’s team.

He has spent two decades as bench boss at McGill and has guided the Martlets to a berth at the Canadian national championship tournament in 17 of his 20 seasons, winning four gold medals, five silvers and five bronzes.

(McGill also won another silver under interim head coach Amey Doyle when Smith was on sabbatical to coach at the 2010 Olympics.)

Over his four national championship seasons (2008, 2009, 2011, 2014) the team posted a combined 131-5-0 record against Canadian university opponents.

An eight-time recipient of the Quebec university coach-of-the-year honours (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014), he is also a three-time CIS coach of the year, winning the award in 2003, 2008 and 2012.

The 2007-08 title marked the first time that any McGill women's team, in any sport, captured a CIS / U SPORTS championship.

The next season, the Martlets repeated as national champs, going undefeated in league (18-0) and post-season action (7-0) for the second straight year. The third crown was won in 2010-11, when the Martlets went 33-0 against Canadian university teams, including a 20-0 record in league play and a 7-0 mark in post-season play. The fourth title was in 2013-14, when the Martlets registered a 29-4 mark against Canadian university teams, including 18-2 in league play and 6-2 in the post-season.

After those four national crowns, the 2017 basketball Martlets became the only other McGill team to win a U SPORTS national crown.

16 Alyssa Cecere • Associate Coach

Alyssa Cecere was appointed in 2014 as a full-time associate coach with the McGill University women's hockey team. Cecere (pronounced CHETCHER- ray), a 30-year-old native of Brossard, Que., won three national championships as a left-winger with the McGill Martlets (2008, 2009, 2011) and also skated to a Clarkson Cup national title in 2012 with the Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women's Hockey League. In 2009 she helped Canada win gold at the FISU Winter Universiade in Harbin, China. During her five seasons as a left-winger with the Martlets, Cecere served three years as an alternate captain, scoring 43 goals and 110 points with 118 penalty minutes in 178 games overall. Fluently bilingual, Cecere attended Centennial Regional high school and captained the Dawson College Blues before graduating from McGill in 2011 with a physical education degree. She served as an assistant coach at Dawson for three years and has worked for the past 11 years as an instructor at the Martlet Hockey School. She was also a physical education instructor at various academic institutions, including Saint John's elementary school in St. Jean, Que., Harmony elementary school in Chateauguay, Que., and was employed by the Riverside School Board in St. Hubert, Que.

24 2019-20 Mc Gill RSEQ HONOREES

Five members of the McGill University women's hockey team were among the honorees when the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec announced their laureates for the 2019-20 season.

Team captain Emilia Cotter of Toronto, merited the league's Leadership & Community Service Award, while goaltender Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., and forward Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean, Que., both earned first-team all-star status. Forward Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que., and rearguard Kate Devries of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., received second team honours.

Cotter, a 22-year-old science senior majoring in kinesiology, is the sixth McGill recipient of the conference's nomination for the national Marion Hillard Award, presented to the U SPORTS hockey player who best combines academics, leadership and citizenship. The 5-foot-7 defensive stalwart dressed for all 20 league games and scored two goals along with a pair of assists and only six penalty minutes. She has volunteered for numerous community endeavors over her five years with the Martlets, including the team's annual "Shoebox Project" game – in aid of the organization that distributes gift-filled boxes to homeless women in Montreal -- and the "McGill Students for Best Buddies", an international not-for-profit program that creates opportunities and friendships for people with intellectual disabilities.

Cotter assists the Special Olympics cause by serving as the McGill Martlets coordinator for a "Motionball" fundraiser and attending hockey practices for children with disabilities. She spends 4-5 hours per week assisting patients and doctors in the Cancer Care Unit at St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal. As co-president of the McGill Varsity Council, she helps plan financial literacy and time-management workshops for student-athletes. She also assists in the organization of numerous other events, including the council's annual Christmas gift-wrapping initiative for Sun Youth, a Montreal-based organization that provides services for needy families. Finally, she has served as the hockey team's liaison and leader for the "Bell Let's Talk" mental health program as well as the annual "Shoot for the Cure" game, a fundraiser for breast cancer research and awareness.

Deguire is a three-time all-star who stands 5-foot-8 between the pipes. She started in 18 of the team's 20 games and posted an 11-7 record with five shutouts, a stingy 1.67 goals-against average, and a .939 save percentage. The 22-year-old kinesiology senior led all Quebec league starters in games, minutes (1,115), wins, shutouts, GAA and save percentage. She helped guide the Martlets to tie for the best defensive record in the league (1.95 GAA). In 71 career appearances over her four years, Deguire has a 46-24 regular season record with 13 shutouts, a 1.68 GAA and a .936 save percentage. Over all games, she will head to the nationals with a 76-48-1 career record and 26 shutouts in 129 contests.

Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-9 centre and two-time all-star, finished fourth in the conference scoring race, despite missing 25 per cent of the season with injuries. She averaged 1.2 points per game and posted an 8-10-18 record in 15 contests. A 24-year-old psychology senior who serves as one of the team's alternate captains, she either scored or assisted on 34 per cent of McGill's 53 goals. Downie-Landry registered three power-play goals, two shorthanded markers, one game-winner and twice tallied the first goal of a game. She heads to the nationals with a career record of 73 goals and 162 career points in 136 contests overall since joining the team in 2016.

Dumais, a 5-foot-6 forward, had a career-best season, leading the team in goals and ranking second in points with a 9-8-17 record and only four penalty minutes in 19 league games. A 22-year-old management senior who is majoring in accounting and finance, she scored four times on the power-play, in addition to a pair of game-winners, one overtime marker, two insurance goals and she netted the first goal in a game on one occasion. Dumais head to nationals with a career record of 43 goals and 83 points with only 30 PIMs in 145 outings overall.

Devries, an imposing 5-foot-11 defenceman, also had a career-best season. The 22-year-old bio-engineering senior was McGill's top-point-producing rearguard and ranked third among the league's blueliners with 13 points – 12 of them assists -- in 20 games. Her lone goal was an overtime winner against Ottawa on Nov. 1. The quarterback on McGill's league-leading power-play, Devries led the league in power-play assists with eight. In 109 career contests over her five seasons, she heads to nationals with an 8-36- 44 record and 24 PIMs. M c Gill All Time U SPORT AWARD Winners
