In the semifinals, the Martlets swept third-place Ottawa (11-7-2) series, winning 3-1 and 3-0. Meanwhile, the fourth-place Carabins (9-6-5) upset Concordia 2-1 in their semifinal series, setting up the Quebec final showdown with McGill. Turning The Tables: McGill swept the Montreal Carabins (4-2 and 4-1) to win the best- of-three Quebec university title and claim the Dr. Ed Enos Cup as champions of the RSEQ conference... It was their first Quebec banner in three years and the 15th league title overall... It was also McGill’s first-ever title won at the home of the Carabins, who defeated the Mart- lets in last year’s league championship series at McConnell Arena and have been crowned league champions four times, all on McGill ice... Both teams could cross paths again at the U SPORTS Final Eight national championship, a three-game tournament in Charlottetown, March 12-15. McGill will be ranked among the top four as one of four league champions across the country. The Carabins will be seeded among the bottom four as a league finalist. McGill At Nationals: The Martlets will take a 23-12 overall record -- and a six-game win streak -- into the national championship... They have qualified for the nationals 19 times in the 24 years since the women’s hockey championship was inaugurated in 1997... The Martlets have reached the tourney final 10 times, winning four gold medals and six silvers, to go along with five bronzes... Last year, McGill was seeded fifth at nationals and surprised the pundits by reaching the gold medal game, where they suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Guelph. The Carabins went into the tourney seeded second and finished with a bronze... A team from the RSEQ conference had medaled at nationals in each of the past 14 years, collecting six gold medals, seven silvers and five bronzes during that span... Since the inaugural tourney in 1997, teams from the Quebec conference have combined to win eight gold medals, nine silvers and 10 bronzes... Quebec based teams to win the national championship include: Concordia (1998, 1999), McGill (2008, 2009, 2011, 2014) and Montreal (2013, 2016). Roster Rap: McGill has a veteran 25-member roster that features five freshmen, two soph- omores, six juniors and 12 seniors... The lineup is composed of eight players from Quebec, eight from Ontario, four from British Columbia, plus one apiece from Alberta, New Bruns- wick, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and one American from California... Looking at their academic programs, nine are enrolled in the faculty of Science (including one majoring in neuroscience), four in Education, three in Engineering, two in Management and seven in Arts. Mr. Smith Goes To Town: Bench boss Peter Smith returns to Charlottetown with the Martlets for the second straight year... Smith is in his 20th season at McGill, where he has coached in 796 games and owns a 534-229-33 record overall. A native of Lachine, Que., Smith is a McGill physical education grad (B.Ed and Masters in Sports Psychology), where he was captain of the varsity swim team. Powerful Play: One of the keys to success this season has been on special teams... McGill led the Quebec league in both power-play (22.7%) and penalty-killing (89.8%)... Over the 20-game regular season, McGill scored 34 per cent of their goals on special teams (18/53), leading the league in both power-play (15) and shorthanded (3) goals. 6 Getting Offence From Defence: Another key to success this season has been a significant increase of scoring from a large and mobile defensive corps... Of McGill’s 53 goals scored in regular-season play, six came from the blue-line... That was their highest offensive output from the defence in six years, dating back to the 2014-15 season when they had 11 goals from the back end. The rearguards only scored twice last season, preceded in previous campaigns by three, one and two... This year’s set of imposing blue-liners is the team’s tallest group ever and they measure 5-11, 5-10, 5-7, 5-7, 5-6, 5-6, 5-4 and 5-3. League Laureates: Five members of the McGill women's hockey team were among the honorees as the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec announced their laureates for the 2019-20 season... Team captain Emilia Cotter, merited the league's Leadership & Commu- nity Service Award, while goaltender Tricia Deguire and forward Jade Downie-Landry both earned first-team all-star status. Forward Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que., and rearguard Kate Devries of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., received second team honours. Welcome Back Cotter: McGill’s Emilia Cotter (pronounced ah-MEELY-ah) is a native of Toronto and in her second year as team captain. This is her second “kick at the can” in Char- lottetown, after leading the team to a silver-medal finish last year. One of five graduating seniors, she is a fifth-year science student, majoring in kinesiology. The 5-foot-7 defenceman has scored a career-best eight goals and 13 points in 35 games this season. She has a career total of 12 goals and 46 points in 178 games... She won the Quebec league’s Leadership & Community Service Award. In Tricia We Trust: The backbone of McGill’s success is veteran Tricia DeGuire, a 5-foot-8 goaltender from Sherbrooke, Que., a nationally-carded athlete who has attended numerous Team Canada camps and tournaments. The kinesiology senior is a three-time all-star who enters the nationals with an overall career record of 76-48-1 and 26 shutouts in 129 games, with a 1.89 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. This season, she led the league in every goaltending category but wins... In 28 contests overall, she has posted an 18- 10 record overall, with seven shutouts, a 1.64 GAA and a .936 save percentage. Jade Is The Colour Of Money: McGill’s offence is sparked by senior Jade Downie-Landry, a two-time all-star forward who was voted as the league’s player of the year last season. The 5-foot-9 centre enters the nationals with 24 goals and 45 points in 30 games overall this season. Over her four years at McGill, the psychology senior has an impressive 73-89-162 record in 136 games overall. Seniors Saying Sayonara: McGill has a dozen seniors on this squad but only five are ex- pected to be wearing their school colours on the ice for the last time. They include four fifth-year veterans, namely team captain Emilia Cotter (BSc, Kinesiology), alternate captains Shana Walker (BSc, Anatomy & Cellular Biology) and Nicole Howlett (BA, Psychology), plus Zoe Todd (BSc, Anatomy & Cellular Biology).
