The Chinese State in Ming Society
The Chinese State in Ming Society The Ming dynasty (1368–1644), a period of commercial expansion and cultural innovation, fashioned the relationship between the present-day state and society in China. In this unique collection of reworked and illustrated essays, one of the leading scholars of Chinese history re-examines this relationship and argues that, contrary to previous scholarship, which emphasized the heavy hand of the state, it was radical responses within society to changes in commercial relations and social networks that led to a stable but dynamic “constitution” during the Ming dynasty. This imaginative reconsideration of existing scholarship also includes two essays first published here and a substantial introduction, and will be fascinating reading for scholars and students interested in China’s development. Timothy Book is Principal of St. John’s College, University of British Colombia. Critical Asian Scholarship Edited by Mark Selden, Binghamton and Cornell Universities, USA The series is intended to showcase the most important individual contributions to scholarship in Asian Studies. Each of the volumes presents a leading Asian scholar addressing themes that are central to his or her most significant and lasting contribution to Asian studies. The series is committed to the rich variety of research and writing on Asia, and is not restricted to any particular discipline, theoretical approach or geographical expertise. Chapter 1: Seismic Activity and Geological Background
CHAPTER 1: SEISMIC ACTIVITY AND GEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND SEISMIC ACTIVITY IN TANGSHAN AND ITS SURROUNDING AREAS Zhu Chuanzhen* The Tangshan earthquake is not an isolated and unexpected event. It has a breeding and formation process. In this paper some inherent observations of the Tangshan earthquake are summarized based on the historical and recent seismic activities in Tangshan and its surrounding areas as well as the characteristics of the Tangshan earthquake sequences itself. Fundamental data necessary for the analysis and study of the damage in the Tangshan earthquake are provided. Meanwhile, some seismic precursors prior to the Tangshan earthquake are also mentioned briefly. I. Summary of Historical Earthquakes China is a country of active seismicity and has also the longest historical earthquake record in the world. The statistics and analysis of historical earthquakes for more than 3000 years show that the distribution of strong earthquakes in China are characterized by the belt shape in space and the reoccurrence in time. Moreover, the stress accumulation and release are non-uniform in time and space within individual seismic zones, and the seismicity is also characterized by having different active periods (Shi Zhenliang et al., 1974). Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the distribution features of strong earthquakes on a larger time and space scale in order to study the processes of the Tangshan earthquake. 1. Strong earthquakes in North China The seismic activity in North China can be considered for the whole area according to the epicentral distribution, focal mechanism, direction of long axis of isoseismals of historical strong earthquakes, as well as the mean crust thickness, geological structure and geomorphology. -

State Categories, Social Boundaries, and Wealth Stratification in Northeast China, 1815 – 1913
WHERE URBAN MIGRANTS MET RURAL SETTLERS: STATE CATEGORIES, SOCIAL BOUNDARIES, AND WEALTH STRATIFICATION IN NORTHEAST CHINA, 1815 – 1913 by Shuang Chen A dissertation submitted by partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in The University of Michigan 2009 Doctoral Committee: Professor James Z. Lee, Chair Professor Barbara A. Anderson Professor Myron P. Gutmann Assistant Professor Pär K. Cassel Professor Cameron D. Campbell, University of California, Los Angeles © Shuang Chen 2009 For my parents, Tong Niannian, and Thomas ii Preface My graduate education at the University of Michigan has been a journey from traditional history to quantitative history to social history. Six and a half years ago, in January 2003, I arrived at the University of Michigan with a background in political and institutional history. Interested in learning social and quantitative history, I entered the field of historical demography and enrolled in classes in social scientific and demographic methods. I soon discovered, however, that in the post-modern era after the linguistic turn, most historians were no longer satisfied with numerical descriptions of social behavior. Instead, they sought the stories behind their quantitative results to elucidate the mentality and agency of historical actors. Accordingly my graduate education also became a journey to develop solutions to integrate quantitative and qualitative methods and produce a more holistic understanding and history of human experience. Fortunately, the well-preserved archival sources in Shuangcheng enabled me to integrate quantitative and qualitative analyses and produce a textured history of land distribution. Shuangcheng was established through the relocation of a state bannermen population in the early nineteenth century. -
