  • The Following Event Descriptions Are Presented for Your Edification and Clarification on What Is Being Represented and Celebrated in Bronze for Our Champions
The following event descriptions are presented for your edification and clarification on what is being represented and celebrated in bronze for our champions. RODEO: Saddle Bronc Riding Saddle Bronc has been a part of the Calgary Stampede since 1912. Style, grace and rhythm define rodeo’s “classic” event. Saddle Bronc riding is a true test of balance. It has been compared to competing on a balance beam, except the “apparatus” in rodeo is a bucking bronc. A saddle bronc rider uses a rein attached to the horse’s halter to help maintain his seat and balance. The length of rein a rider takes will vary on the bucking style of the horse he is riding – too short a rein and the cowboy can get pulled down over the horse’s head. Of a possible 100 points, half of the points are awarded to the cowboy for his ride and spurring action. The other half of the points come from how the bronc bucks and its athletic ability. The spurring motion begins with the cowboy’s feet over the points of the bronc’s shoulders and as the horse bucks, the rider draws his feet back to the “cantle’, or back of the saddle in an arc, then he snaps his feet back to the horse’s shoulders just before the animal’s front feet hit the ground again. Bareback Riding Bareback has also been a part of the Stampede since 1912. In this event, the cowboy holds onto a leather rigging with a snug custom fit handhold that is cinched with a single girth around the horse – during a particularly exciting bareback ride, a rider can feel as if he’s being pulled through a tornado.

  • Charrería: the Artisanship of Mexican Equestrian Culture
Arte en la Charrería: The Artisanship of Mexican Equestrian Culture Educational Program by International Arts & Artists Table of Contents: I. What is Charrería? II. Events of the Charreada III. The origins of the Charreada IV. About the Exhibition V. Discussion Topics VI. Resource List VII. Glossary I. What is Charrería? Charrería is a Mexican cultural tradition that stems from the Spanish-inspired charreada. The charreada is a festive event that is similar to an American rodeo in its variety of competitive equestrian activities. Like the American “rodeo culture,” Charrería extends beyond horses and riders to include aspects such as costume, music, and food that bring a uniquely Latino culture to a sport that has its roots in Spain. The charreada began in Mexico in the 16th century when horses were introduced by the Spanish. As the Spanish tried to develop Central America for their own economic gain, they created an entire culture centered around agriculture and ranching in the haciendas they constructed. This is the culture that is reflected in Charrería. Although the main event is foreign-inspired, the culture reflected in the clothing, saddles, belts, hats, and spurs is largely inspired by traditional indigenous art. The Charrería has endured over five centuries because of the strength of the skills, sensibilities, and traditions that transcend regional and generational differences. Fearing the eventual loss of the Charrería culture, a group of charros, or the “cowboys,” who participate in the charreadas, united and formed various associations to preserve and promote this national culture. The Federación Mexicana de Charrería was founded in Mexico City in 1933 to govern the different charros associations that emerged.

  • Cowboy Traditions
Cowboy Traditions “Winning is not a sometime thing…it’s an all-the-time thing.” Cowboy Traditions STEAMBOAT The logo on the Wyoming uniforms depicts a Cowboy riding a bucking horse. This symbol has been K a part of the University of Wyoming Athletics Department since the early 1920’s, when UW Equipment OO Manager Deane Hunton obtained a photograph of a cowboy, Guy Holt, riding the world famous bucking horse Steamboat. Steamboat was born on a ranch between Laramie and Bosler in 1901, and is regarded as one of the greatest bucking horses ever. Hunton traced the photo, and had it made into a logo, that OUTL was utilized by UW athletic teams. In later years the symbol more closely resembled the logo on the state’s automobile license plates which was a depiction of another horse and rider. That bucking horse also was world famous and was called “Deadman”. While there are differing opinions on exactly which horse and rider is depicted on all of UW’s athletic HES C uniforms today, it is the symbol that is important. The bucking horse and rider represents the toughness, A and the never-say-die spirit that is Wyoming. O C The horse and rider that Hunton traced was of Steamboat with Holt hanging on. The photo was taken at the Albany County Fairgrounds in 1903. The symbol that is currently utilized more closely resembles the bucking horse and rider on the State of Wyoming’s automobile license plates. That YS design was developed by the then Secretary of State, Lester C.

Ross, Jr., Anne and Ronald Abramson, Thelma and Melvin Lenkin 1990.44 Collection page and high resolution image Bucking Tradition – A Wild Ride with the Vaquero Luis Jiménez’s fiberglass sculpture, Vaquero, greets visitors to the Smithsonian American Art Museum at its north entrance. Jiménez intended his sculpture to be an unconventional take on the equestrian monument. In the course of uncovering our mysterious Vaquero, researcher Liz talked to a conservator, a vaquero rider and historian, and searched museum collections and bibliographic databases. In his 1985 interview with the Archives of American Art, Luis Jiménez recalled visiting Washington and making measurements of its equestrian sculptures. He decided to make the Vaquero, “in a way that you would look at the form all over again.” Washington is full of equestrian monuments commemorating military leaders, such as Civil War General John Logan at Logan Circle. Since the ancient Roman bronze of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the horse in the equestrian monument is usually shown walking, standing, or rearing onto its hind legs. But the Vaquero’s horse literally “bucks” tradition with its two front feet planted on the base and his hind legs in the air. Jiménez must have also recognized the symbolism of bucking horse as synonymous with the American West and with liberty.

  • The Legal Status of Rodeo in New Zealand a Paper for the New Zealand Animal Law Association
THE LEGAL STATUS OF RODEO IN NEW ZEALAND A PAPER FOR THE NEW ZEALAND ANIMAL LAW ASSOCIATION MARCH 2018 CATRIONA MACLENNAN | BARRISTER NZALA.ORG All New Zealand photos in this report are used by permission of the photographers, who wish to remain unnamed. These photos should not be reproduced in any capacity without the express permission of the photographers, which may be requested by contacting NZALA. Credits for Canada photos (pages 3, 8, 9, 77, 78, 87, 90 & back cover): Jo-Anne McArthur / We Animals All other photos are stock images from rodeos internationally. COVER IMAGE: TAUPO RODEO, NZ, 2016 – ANIMAL WRESTLING. FOREWORD From a legal perspective, rodeo in New Zealand is somewhat of an anomaly. Like recreational hunting or animal racing, some rodeo practices cause animals to suffer pain or distress for human entertainment. Unlike hunting and racing, rodeo is not explicitly allowed by legislation and is thus susceptible to the legal definition of ill-treatment, along with its criminal ramifications. The legality of rodeo in New Zealand under existing legislation is hanging by the thread of public acceptability or, in legal terms, the ‘reasonable or necessary’ test. Growing criticism of rodeo in the public opinion provides good prospects our Judiciary may soon accept the view that the pain and distress inflicted on rodeo animals are unreasonable and unnecessary according to modern New Zealand community values. Since 2004, rodeo in New Zealand has been regulated within the confines of a Code of elfare.W The legality of the current Code and its compatibility with its primary legislation deserve serious consideration, especially in light of the 2015 amendments to the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and the growing body of scientific evidence about the pain and distress of animals in rodeos.

  • Thesis Equestrianism: Serious Leisure And
THESIS EQUESTRIANISM: SERIOUS LEISURE AND INTERSUBJECTIVITY Submitted by Erin Butler Department of Sociology In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Fall 2010 Master’s Committee: Department Chair: Jack Brouillette Advisor: Jennifer Cross Lori Peek Ben Grainger ABSTRACT EQUESTRIANISM: SERIOUS LEISURE AND INTERSUBJECTIVITY Using the concepts of serious leisure and symbolic interactionism, this thesis explores the experiences of equestrians in the hunter/jumper discipline. This thesis draws from ethnographic research methods that utilize a combination of two years of participant observation and in-depth interviews. This research challenges the basis for Mead’s (and others’) exclusion of nonhuman animals from consideration as “authentic” social actors by highlighting the ways horse owners, in this study, describe their horses as minded, thoughtful individuals. These owners refute the notions that horses are mindless objects or are indistinct from other insensate elements of “nature,” (i.e. air, water, or land). Focusing on the interactions between humans and horses, I examine the criteria used by horse owners to define their horses as minded individuals with whom they construct and maintain meaningful and satisfying social relationships. Using the rich and detailed descriptions of participants, I argue that two features of hunter/jumper equestrianism warrant reclassifying it as an amateur pursuit, rather than hobbyist activity: the visible and influential presence of professionals within the sport and owners’ perception of horses’ subjectivity, which makes the achievement of intersubjectivity possible. I emphasized the role of actions and argue that the concepts of ‘mind,’ ‘self,’ and ‘personhood’ are social constructions that arise from interaction.

Herring Theodore Friend Committee Member, R. Neil Hooper Head of Department, Gary R. Acuff December 2008 Major Subject: Animal Science iii ABSTRACT Evaluation of Traits Associated with Bucking Bull Performance and Behavior. (December 2008) Natasha Elizabeth Romero, B.S., Texas A&M University Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Andy D. Herring Dr. Theodore Friend Video and industry data were used to assess the inter-relationships of aggression, delivery, coat color, year of birth, number of outs, buckoff percent and score in rodeo bulls. An evaluation of laterality based on observations of how the individual animals were loaded into chutes at 11 bull riding events showed 63% left-handed delivery and 37% right-handed delivery across all observations (n = 525). There was a similar distribution for aggressiveness (based on whether or not the bull charged after the rider dismounted) with 64% of bulls being non-aggressive and 36% of bulls being aggressive. Significant linear relationships existed between score and number of outs and score and buckoff percentage indicating that experience impacted performance.
