Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost October 25, 2020 10 a.m. Welcome and announcements ............................................................................ Rev. Andrew Heil Prelude - Sarabande on "Land of Rest" ..........................................setting by Gerald Near (1966) Call to Worship, from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (CEB) Listen! Our God is the Lord! Only the Lord! Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your being, and all your strength. These words that I am commanding you today must always be on your minds. Recite them to your children. Talk about them when you are sitting around your house and when you are out and about, when you are lying down and when you are getting up. Tie them on your hand as a sign. They should be on your forehead as a symbol. Write them on the doorframes of your house and on your city’s gates. Liturgy: Christian Homes, pg.119-121 Scripture Lessons: Leviticus 19:1-2, 15-18 Psalm 1 Happy are they who do not follow in the counsel of the wicked, nor linger in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seats of the scornful! Their delight is in the law of the Lord and they meditate on this law, day and night. Like a tree planted by streams of water bearing fruit at just the right time, with leaves that do not wither, whatever they do shall prosper. As for the wicked, it is not so with them; they are like chaff which the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when the judgment comes, nor the sinner in the council of the righteous. For the Lord is intimately acquainted with the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish. In late 2019, we determined that our annual church council would be held Sunday, November 1, immediately following worship. At the time, of course, we had no idea that COVID-19 would prevent our gathering as a congregation for this important meeting. Our current guidelines for gathering (developed by the Safety Ministry Team and approved by the Board of Elders) limit attendance at any indoor event to ten persons. Following the guidance of our Provincial Elders Conference, the Home Church Board of Elders has voted to hold a ten- person council whose sole purpose will be to set a new council date. The following persons, representing our two boards and the congregation as a whole, will attend: Ginny Tobiassen, council chair Bev Moore, council secretary Robyn Goslen, vice-chair of elders Katherine Petree, elder David Shaffner, chair of trustees Hal Garner, trustee Mark Goslen Bill Petree Bonnie Blackwell Hal Garrison In the interest of transparency, this event will be live-streamed so that members (and anyone else) can easily follow the action of the council. We invite all interested members to remain online following worship in order to watch the meeting, which we expect to be brief. The Board of Elders has voted to set the new council date at March 7, 2021. Provided gathering is possible, board elections will be held at that time. Current members of the board whose terms were to end December 31 have agreed to remain on the boards until elections can be held. In the Jewish tradition, certain prayers can be recited only in the presence of a minyan—a group of ten persons, said to constitute a representative “community of Israel.” We can think of this year’s church council as a kind of minyan: ten people who, on behalf of the Home Church congregation, will meet to uphold our community life under these difficult circumstances, and to lift our voices in prayer on behalf of the church. May God bless our actions and our prayers, in the name of Jesus. .
