Critical Review of Russula Species (Agaricomycetes) Known from Tatra National Park (Poland and Slovakia)
Polish Botanical Journal 54(1): 41–53, 2009 CRITICAL REVIEW OF RUSSULA SPECIES (AGARICOMYCETES) KNOWN FROM TATRA NATIONAL PARK (POLAND AND SLOVAKIA) ANNA RONIKIER & SLAVOMÍR ADAMČÍK Abstract. All available published data on the occurrence of Russula species in Tatra National Park are summarized. Excluding the doubtful data, which are discussed herein, 66 species are recognized in Tatra National Park. Within each of the three main geomorphological units of the range, 42 species were recorded in the West Tatras, 18 in the High Tatras, and 16 in the Belanské Tatry Mts; additionally, 35 species were found in areas outside the Tatra Mts but within the National Park borders. Montane forests are the richest in Russula species (58); 13 species were found in the subalpine and 8 in the alpine belt. The number of reported species is highest in the Polish part of the West Tatra Mts; almost no data are available from the Slovak High Tatras. The smallest unit, the Belanské Tatry Mts, is the Tatra region best studied for alpine species. In comparison to other regions in Poland and Slovakia, Tatra National Park seems to be relatively well investigated, but in view of the richness of habitats in the Tatra Mts, we believe the actual diversity of Russula species in the region is higher than presently known. A phylogenetic reconstruction based on ITS rDNA sequences indicates that several species are involved, with strong phylogeographic signal. Although morphological characters are largely qualitative, examination of basidiomata suggests that specimens included in discrete clades can be distinguished at the species level. On these bases (phylogenetic, morphological), several new taxa are proposed: M. clitocyboidea, M. texensis, M. fusca, M. subfurfuracea, M. rodmani (with f. murina) and M. marginata. Tricholomopsis fallax is transferred to Megacollybia; M. platyphylla remains the type species of the genus but appears to be restricted to Europe, Scandinavia and western and central Russia. However, the rate of forest loss greatly exceeds the rate of species documentation and this increases the risk of losing macrofungi diversity to extinction. A field study was carried out in Kereita, Kikuyu Escarpment Forest, southern part of Aberdare range forest to determine effect of indigenous forest conversion to plantation forest on diversity of macrofungi. Macrofungi diversity was assessed in a 22 year old Pinus patula (Pine) plantation and a pristine indigenous forest during dry (short rains, December, 2014) and wet (long rains, May, 2015) seasons. -

Fungus and Lichen Genera in the NEMF Database Taxonomic hierarchy: phyllum > class (-etes) > order (-ales) > family (-ceae) > genus. Total number of genera in the database: 526 Anamorphic fungi (see p. 4), which are disseminated by propagules not formed from cells where meiosis has occurred, are presently not grouped by class, order, etc. Most propagules can be referred to as "conidia," but some are derived from unspecialized vegetative mycelium. A significant number are correlated with fungal states that produce spores derived from cells where meiosis has, or is assumed to have, occurred. These are, where known, members of the ascomycetes or basidiomycetes. However, in many cases, they are still undescribed, unrecognized or poorly known. Scientific Name Volvariella volvacea Distribution It is cultivated widely in East and Southeast Asia, and introduced in many other regions, including Africa, North America and Australia. It is recorded from Solomon Islands. Use & Appearance The paddy straw mushroom is grown on rice straw beds and picked immature, during the button or egg phase and before the veil ruptures (Photo 1). It is found in woodchips, rich garden Photo 1. The cap is 5-12 cm diameter, first ovoid, then cone-like and finally broadly convex or bell- shaped, dark grey in the centre, becoming silvery-white or brownish-grey towards the margins, radially streaked with soft hairs (Photo 3). The cap tends to split at the edges. -
