The 2021-22 Season also marks the 40th Season of Sarasota Opera Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Victor DeRenzi. Maestro DeRenzi is a Knight of the Italian Republic and the only conductor in the world to have performed all the works of Giuseppe Verdi. The last year has been challenging for us all. We are thrilled to be able to welcome our community of opera lovers back to the Sarasota Opera House, where we can once again be together to enjoy the excitement of the human voice and live opera! The Silken Ladder (La scala di seta) FIRST TIME AT THE OPERA? Music by Gioachino Rossini / Words by Giuseppe Maria Foppa Dress comfortably and be yourself. We want everyone to feel at home in our theater. Appropriate dress can be anything from jeans and khakis to gowns and tuxedos. However Rossini’s The Silken Ladder is a spirited one-act comedy that spins a seductive story of a you dress, at Sarasota Opera you give yourself permission to be fabulous! secret husband and would-be lovers who scale a silken ladder into and out of a lady’s room. La traviata, based on the Alexandre Dumas play La dame aux camellias, tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a courtesan who finds true love and is then forced to make a terrible sacrifice by an unforgiving society. Alternating in the role of Violetta Valéry are sopranos Eglise Gutiérrez and Ailyn Pérez. Opera News recently featured an article on Ms. Gutiérrez that stated, “The tiny Cuban- American soprano combines her vocal acuity with an emotional presence and a Method-like ability to listen moment-to-moment that makes her an opera-lover’s (and a theater-lover’s) dream.” Ms. Gutiérrez is a rising star of the international opera world only four years after making her professional debut as Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor in Bogotá, Colombia.

    Manon Lescaut Cast Biographies Soprano Lianna Haroutounian made her San Francisco Opera debut in 2014's Tosca and returned in 2016 as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, a role she recently sang to great acclaim at the Vienna State Opera, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, Hamburg State Opera and Seattle Opera. She opened San Francisco Opera’s 2018–19 Season as Nedda in Pagliacci and makes her role debut with the Company as the title heroine in Manon Lescaut next season.     Newsletter of the September 2019 We begin our first full year as the Manatee Opera Guild. Let’s all work together to recruit new members as befits our new, geographically-expanded name! A big Thank You to Maryanne Hazen who followed through with our decision to change our name to Manatee Opera Guild. Over the summer, Maryanne was in contact with our bankers, Sarasota Opera Association and the state of Florida to legalize our name change. She skillfully navigated all the steps and cut through the red tape. We appreciate her efforts. Another big thank you to Jean Roberts who will be taking over the job of luncheon reservations/hospitality as of October. Jean has already finalized the menu choices for the year. Thanks to all the others who volunteered to step up with this responsibility. We will keep you in mind for other jobs like this one as the year progresses. I am happy to report that Cathy Beard is on the road to recovery. Good news! I hope everyone enjoyed their summer. The lucky ones were somewhere cooler and drier, but we year- rounders were able to catch some time, between raindrops, at the golf course, the pool and at the blissfully red-tide free beaches. A lack of red-tide this year is good news for the Opera too, both in terms of attendance and singers’ voices. We are looking forward to another year of great opera, great meetings, and fun-filled MOG events! You will find a full roster of our meetings and events in this newsletter, so hang onto it until the new directory comes out in October.

Besides the Marriage of Figaro many bassoonists are blithely unaware of the excerpts on opera bassoon audition lists. This document attempts to introduce and analyze the most popular opera excerpts for principal and second bassoon. Thirty-four opera companies were contacted in an effort to obtain the most accurate listing of opera bassoon excerpts.     THE GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST PERFORMER BIOGRAPHIES Deborah Voight (Minnie) Deborah Voigt is hailed by the worldʼs critics and audiences as todayʼs foremost dramatic soprano. The former Adler Fellow and Merola Opera Program alumna made her main stage debut in Don Carlos and has since returned to the Company in nine subsequent productions, most recently as Amelia Anckarström in Un Ballo in Maschera (2006). In addition to the role of Amelia in the 1990 production of Un Ballo in Maschera, her other performances at San Francisco Opera include Anna (Nabucco), Elisabeth (Tannhäuser), the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos, and Sieglinde (Die Walküre); these performances in La Fanciulla del West mark her role debut as Minnie.
