The group of eight regulars, and up to 14 at times, meets weekly to create crafts and gifts for local markets and the Christmas Shop. Barbara Preece has been involved since the beginning and says the group is as much about socialising as about making crafts. The shop stocks a range of handmade Christmas items — from wreaths for the door to novel decorations for the tree. The church is open for viewing every day from now until Friday, December 22 between 10am-4pm. As well as being decorated, it has been converted into a cafe´ and morning and afternoon teas are available. On Sunday, December 17 the church is holding a cafe´service. Mrs Preece says the church decorations are more traditional than festive — more about the reason for Christmas than the com- mercial side. And she says it is a wonderful atmosphere for some quiet reflec- tion and contemplation. All the funds raised through the cafe´and shop are either donated to the church or local charities. But make sure you know what protections you have before you hit the check-out button. “If you buy goods or services online, there are some really important things you need to know about who you are buying from, because this can affect what your consumer rights are if the sale goes wrong,” says Jessica Brown of Citizens Advice Bureau Te Awamutu. “You’re covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act for goods or services sold by a business that is based in New Zealand — even if you bid for it in an auction. “But if the seller is not a business or if they are based overseas you don’t have much protection.” Mrs Brown says that if you do want to buy from a private seller, you can minimise your risk by getting their full name and address (in case you need to track them down later), checking the feedback from past customers, and — if at all possible — inspecting the item before you hand over your money. “If you bought your presents from a New Zealand trader then those presents are covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act, even after you’ve gifted them,” says Mrs Brown. “This also applies if you bought them on sale.
