I trace the development from D. H. Lawrence, in a period of gradually increasing linguistic and political working-class enfranchisement, through Walter Greenwood, in a period of industrial depression,to the popular successof Alan Sillitoe, in a period of great economic freedom. My thesis explores the ambiguities of the twentieth-century project of English working-class fiction and challengesreceived versions of working-class identity and of working-class writing. Across a fifty year history, I ask a wide range of theoretical questions. I look at the subject of enfranchisement,both linguistic and political. I reassessthe significance of so-called regionalism, in the context of a dominant metropolitan modernity. I argue that working-class writing was an alternative to modernism rather than a residual cultural form. 1 disentangle the issue of authenticity from the variously prevailing progressivist definitions and trace the evolution of local classidentities under the pressureof an increasingly nationalized culture. I describe and analysethe complex play of local, regional, and metropolitan-national. affiliations as they are played out in three successivegenerations of writers in the regional-metropolitan arenasof Edwardian and postwar Nottingham and interwar Salford. 1 conclude the thesis by arguing that working-class fiction has developed from the tense introspection of the early Lawrence to the aggressiveconfidence of Sillitoe. This viii literary development runs alongside increasedeconomic prosperity and political representation.'Ilie development is acted out in terms of introspective conflict - political, regional, sexual,literary, and in relation to class.Finally, the emergenceof film as a popular medium enabled greater artistic and commercial representation of working-class communities. In the expectation that the writer would represent his class,a regional and political authenticity was demanded in a manner not expected of writers from a middle- or upper-classback-ground. The fiction adds to and endorsesworking-class mythologies, whilst at the sametime challenging and subvcrfing them. In this thesis, I look at three moments and three different perceptions of classin twentieth-century history. These perceptions are fictional interpretations of class,which form part of a wider temporal definition of the Enghsh working class.The first moment is at the Edwardian turn into mechanized modernity, coinciding with a prolonged period of gradual political, economic, and linguistic classemancipation. D. H. Lawrence's Solis andLovers (1913) explores the conflicts and contradictions between individual, class,and mass consciousness,between social mobility and regional immobility, and between the English rural tradition and the onset of industrialized modernity. The tensions of modernity are echoed in the classtensions that causethe intellectual confusion of the artistic hero, Paul Nforel. Lawrence's alternative to modernity is to emphasizethe rural tradition and to focus on the emancipation of the working class,but this alternative is constrained by the myths of working-class culture which are necessaryto secureworking- classidentity but which Emit a social and intellectual mobility. Lawrence's achievementin Sonsand Lovers is to present the culture of his -,Vorking-class community to a metropolitan audiencein a persuasivelyrealist manner. By emphasizing the fluidity and complexity of his community, he underscoresthe difficulty individual consciousnesshas in conforming to and rejecting the shared myths and concepts which forge perceptions of working-class communities. This achievement enabled future working-class writers to portray their classin complex ways which challengeperceived ideas of classand community. Completing a PhD is not the usual path for someone who has grown up in public housing and experienced childhood as a welfare dependent. The majority of my cohort from Chingford Hall Estate did not complete school beyond Year 10. As far as I am aware, I am the only one among my Estate peers to have a degree and definitely the only one to have attempted a PhD. Having a tertiary education has set me apart from my peers in many ways, and I no longer live on the Estate (although my mother and old neighbours are still there). But when I go back to visit, my old friends and neighbours are interested in my education and they congratulate me on my achievements. When I explain that I’m writing about people like them – about stories they can relate to, they are pleased. The fact that I can discuss my research with my family, old school friends and neighbours is really important. If they couldn’t understand my work there would be little reason for me to continue. My life has been shaped by my class. It has affected my education, my opportunities and my outlook on life. I don’t look back at the hardship with a fuzzy sense of nostalgia, and I will be forever angry at the class system that held so many of us back, but I am proud of my working-class family, friends and neighbourhood.

Andrews) Postbellum African American fiction provides an index to the complex attitudes toward social status and class divisions that arose within post -Civil War black communities. As I argue, African American narratives in the last quarter of the nineteenth century encode the discourse of class in discussions of respectability, labor, and discrimination. Conceiving of class as a concept that does not necessarily denote economic conditions, both well -known and largely ignored narrativ es of the period emphasize moral and ideological parameters for judging social distinctions. Writers theorize whether intraracial class stratification thwarts black sociopolitical advancement, fracturing black communities from within, or conversely, foster s racial uplift led by the black “better class.” Though the fiction variably delineates social classes, each of the texts under study in Our Kind of People imagines classification as an inevitable and useful means of reforming the turn -of-the-century Ameri can social order. In this thesis, I set out to illustrate how epistemic injustice functions in this divide between white working-class men and the educated elite. I do this by discussing the discursive ways in which working-class knowledge and experience are devalued as legitimate sources of knowledge. I demonstrate this by using critical discourse analysis to interpret the underlying attitudes and ideologies in comments made by Clinton and Trump during their 2016 presidential campaigns. I also discuss how these ideologies are positively or negatively perceived by Trump’s working-class base. Using feminist standpoint theory and phenomenology as a lens of interpretation, I argue that white working-class men are increasingly alienated from progressive politics through classist and ableist rhetoric.

    A Study of Working-Class Men Who Desired Other Men in the North of England, c.1895 - 1957 Helen Smith Department of History A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2012 Abstract This thesis is the first detailed academic study of non-metropolitan men who desired other men in England during the period 1895-1957. It places issues of class, masculinity and regionality alongside sexuality in seeking to understand how men experienced their emotional and sexual relationships with each other. It argues that fluid notions of sexuality were rooted in deeply embedded notions of class and region. The thesis examines the six decades from 1895 to 1957 in an attempt to explore patterns of change over a broad period and uses a wide variety of sources such as legal records, newspapers, letters, social surveys and oral histories to achieve this. Amongst northern working men, ‘normality’ and ‘good character’ were not necessarily disrupted by same sex desire. As long as a man was a good, reliable worker, many other potential transgressions could be forgiven or overlooked. This type of tolerance of (or ambivalence to) same sex desire was shaken by affluence and the increased visibility of men with a clear sexuality from the 1950s and into the era of decriminalisation. The thesis analyses patterns of work, sex, friendship and sociability throughout the period to understand how these traditions of tolerance and ambivalence were formed and why they eventually came to an end. Although the impact of affluence and decriminalisation had countless positive effects both for working people in general and men who desired other men specifically, the thesis will acknowledge that this impact irrevocably altered a way of life and of understanding the world.

Newman employs several narrators on the album in order to explore multiple perspectives and elements that illuminate southern identity. Newman’s observations result in a view of the South as disenfranchised, defeated not only by their regional prejudice and own mistakes, but by moral hypocrisy and abandonment from the rest of the United States. In implicating the rest of the country, Newman indicates that the struggles highlighted in the South and southern identity are not simply a result of regional dynamics, but indicative of larger American dynamics. What’s more, many of Newman’s observations and commentary withstand the test of time, and maintain relevance to political and social dynamics still present today. In providing biographical, historical, social, and musical context, as well as close-reading the album, the thesis not only explores Newman’s methods, but argues for his larger goals. Abstract Working-class masculinity has lost its steam. Since 2008, a sub-genre of Hollywood films has emerged that depicts the current crisis, and imminent demise, of working-class masculinity in the United States. The 2008 financial crisis has had devastating effects on the American economy, and particularly the working-class, whose precarious economic position has only been exacerbated under neoliberalism. These effects have become the thematic focus of a fringe genre of films, which show how the destabilization of the American economy has incited greater instability in gender relations, and has had an acute impact on working-class men.

    Love on the Dole A film by John Baxter Based on the novel by Walter Greenwood Starring Deborah Kerr and Clifford Evans Set in 1930s Salford during the Great Depression, Love on the Dole follows two young siblings, Harry and Sally Hardcastle, who fall prey to poverty and mass unemployment, and must make terrible sacrifices in order to survive. Initially banned when it was made in 1941, it has never been available on Blu-ray. On 18 January 2016 the BFI will release it for the first time, presented in a Dual Format Edition (Blu-ray and DVD discs), accompanied by three short films from the BFI National Archive and a booklet. Although its stark portrayal of social deprivation led the British Board of Film Censors to ban the film as a ‘very sordid story in very sordid surroundings’, Love on the Dole nonetheless retains an optimistic spirit, reinforcing the ideal that Britain’s working classes could face any hardship. Through its impassioned performances, it shows faith in the values of liberal democracy which Britain upheld throughout the war, and looks forward to a better future. Sally Hardcastle is played by Deborah Kerr (From Here to Eternity, The Innocents), who was just 19 at the time and at the beginning of her long film career. Geoffrey Hibbert (In Which We Serve) is her brother Harry Hardcastle and Welsh actor Clifford Evans (The Curse of the Werewolf, The Power Game) is her boyfriend Larry Meath. Love on the Dole will be screened at BFI Southbank on 17 and 21 January (with an introduction by film historian Geoff Brown on Sunday 17), as part of the season Blitz Flicks running throughout the month.

They present essays on, among others, Basque cinema; gendered controversies in Small Cinemas in post-communist small cinemas in Slovakia and Czech Republic; ethnic stereotypes in the works of Polish filmmakers; stereotypical representation of women in Japanese avant-garde; post-communist political myths in Hungary; the separatist movements of Catalonia; people in diasporas and during Falkowska/KrzysztofJanina Loska (eds.) migrations. In view of these timely topics, the book touches on the most serious social and political problems. The films discussed provide an excellent platform for enhancing debates on politics, gender, migration and new aesthetics in cinema at departments of history, sociology, literature and film. The Author Janina Falkowska is a retired professor from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario (Canada) and Professor at the University of Economics and Humanities (WSEH) in Bielsko-Biala (Poland). She specializes in East-Central European and Western European cinemas and has published extensively on Polish and East-Central European cinemas in journals and books related to Eastern and Central Europe. She has initiated a series of conferences about small cinemas in Europe and organized workshops and conferences on European cinemas in Canada.
