September 2009 Freedom of Information and Environmental Information Regulations caseload snapshot in September 2009 This report provides a snapshot of the Freedom of Information and Environmental Information Regulations cases that have been under consideration by the ICO for 30 days or more and are currently open. The summaries are intended to describe the nature of the information requested, they do not replicate the exact details of the requests. No decisions have been reached on these complaints. As the snapshot demonstrates, cases that take longer than 30 days tend to involve contested information of a more complex nature. Further statistics around our case handling were published in early July in our annual report (available on the website). ADVISORS: Professor Jennifer Mitchell and Professor Anastasia Pease This thesis investigates the physical and mental factors extremist religious organizations, such as the Westboro Baptist Church, Church of Scientology and Fundamentalist Mormonism use to decrease the chance of members’ departure from their institutions. These factors include familial relationships, physical and mental limitations, and restricted exposure to society outside of the religious organization. The following memoirs illustrate and expose these difficulties and how the female authors overcome these limitations: Educated by Tara Westover, Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape by Jenna Miscavige Hill and Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church by Megan Phelps-Roper.

Ron Hubbard Founder of Dianetics and Scientology EDITORS’ NOTE “A chronological study of materials is necessary for the complete training of a truly top grade expert in these lines. He can see how the subject progressed and so is able to see which are the highest levels of development. Not the least advantage in this is the defining of words and terms for each, when originally used, was defined, in most cases, with considerable exactitude, and one is not left with any misunderstoods.” —L. Ron Hubbard The first eight volumes of the Technical Bulletins of Dianetics and Scientology contain, exclusively, issues written by L. Ron Hubbard, thus providing a chronological time track of the development of Dianetics and Scientology. Volume IX, The Auditing Series, and Volume X, The Case Supervisor Series, contain Board Technical Bulletins that are part of the series. They are LRH data even though compiled or written by another. So that the time track of the subject may be studied in its entirety, all HCO Bs have been included, excluding only those upper level materials which will be found on courses to which they apply.

  • Brainwashing in Scientology's Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF)
Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg Behörde für Inneres – Arbeitsgruppe Scientology und Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Brainwashing in Scientology’s Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF) Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg Behörde für Inneres – Arbeitsgruppe Scientology und Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Brainwashing in Scientology’s Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF) Introduction The Scientology Organisation, its methods, its business practices and above all its victims and their fate continue to arouse the interest of the public. In recent years various media reports have also highlited one aspect of the Organisation, the ”Rehabi- litation Project Force” – or RPF. Particularly the reports of former members who have endured the RPF in the US, the UK and in Denmark have made it possible for the author of this brochure, Prof. Ste- phen A. Kent, to describe what I consider to be inhuman practices within the RPF. If the term ”brainwashing”, so often associated with the Scientology Organisation by the public, applies at all, then it certainly applies to the RPF, as this brochure shows. The RPF is part of the ”Sea Organisation” (als known as ”Sea-Org”) of the Scientology Organisation. Sea-Org was created in 1967 and according to L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology Organisation, it is the ”sole guarantee of the survival of Scientology technology on this planet”. Members of Sea-Org use pseudo-naval ranks and uniforms, an the unit is fully organised along military lines. Sea-Org states that its aim is to ”maintain Scientology as a functioning organisation” and that the members, according to its own publicity, have ”signed a contract of eternal service to Scientolo- gy and its aims”.

  • A Letter from the Church of Scientology
Marburg Journal of Religion: Volume 6, No. 2 (June 2001) This is a response to the article: The French and German versus American Debate over 'New Religions', Scientology, and Human Rights Stephen A. Kent, Edmonton (Canada) Published in MJR Vol.6, No.1 (January 2001) A Letter from the Church of Scientology Leisa Goodman Human Rights Director Church of Scientology International Email: [email protected] A person who wears the label of "professor" assumes certain responsibilities. Foremost is that his work will be thorough, fair and honest, and free from preconceptions offered as conclusions. One can hardly imagine a scholar writing about Judaism, but not speaking to any Jews. Or doing a dissertation on the Lutherans, but never attending one of their services. What would you think of someone who claimed a close knowledge of Catholicism based on his conversations with excommunicates? And if he insisted that his lack of first-hand information was an asset, not a liability, and yet he had only negative things to say, you would probably label him biased, at least. Certainly, you would doubt his being the disinterested seeker after truth that is traditionally the mark of the scholar. Stephen Kent writes about the Church of Scientology. Yet he has never been inside one of our churches, and he refuses to consider Scientologists' views. He has no first-hand experience. His descriptions of the Church of Scientology and its members are remote, unreal and untrue. His role in writing about Scientology is not that of a researcher seeking greater understanding, but a propagandist advocating a cause.

  • SCIENTOLOGY: from Science Fiction to Space-Age Religion
STATEMENT DS-170 SCIENTOLOGY: From Science Fiction to Space-Age Religion by John Weldon Summary The Church of Scientology is a controversial new religion developed by L. Ron Hubbard as an extension of his earlier psychological theories of Dianetics. Drawing on ideas from Buddhist and Hindu religious philosophy, science fiction, and Western concepts in psychology and science, L. Ron Hubbard produced a religion that sees all human beings as immortal spirits (thetans) who have forgotten their identity and become deceived by the very universe they mentally emanated in order to amuse themselves. Scientology claims it can free the thetan to realize his or her true nature and powers through certain controversial procedures that allegedly heal the mind and free the spirit. Although the church claims its beliefs are not incompatible with Christian faith, an evaluation of what Scientology teaches in the areas of God, man, the creation, salvation, and death proves this is not so. Scientology is a powerful new religion whose teachings are inconsistent with the beliefs of orthodox Christian faith. Ours is an age of religious cacophony, as was the Roman Empire of Christ's time. From agnosticism to Hegelianism, from devil-worship to scientific rationalism, from theosophical cults to philosophies of process: virtually any world view conceivable is offered to modern man in the pluralistic marketplace of ideas. Our age is indeed in ideological and societal agony, grasping at anything and everything that can conceivably offer the ecstasy of a cosmic relationship or of a comprehensive Weltanschauung [world view]. — John Warwick Montgomery.1 One of the most intriguing and controversial items found in today's religious marketplace is The Church of Scientology.

Lyons* "Ideas, and not battles, mark the forward progress of mankind."1 I. INTRODUCTION This is a story of long drawn-out battles fought between numerous controversial entities, all of which use weapons of conflicting legal paradigms in an uncertain space. The RTC is one of the formal entities constituting the Church of Scientology and is known for being a "watch dog" of sorts, actively pursuing those who publish or disseminate controversial Church materials without permission.

  • Poor Man's Psychoanalysis?" Observations on Dianetics
"Poor Man's Psychoanalysis?" Observations on Dianetics Roy Wallis The sociology of marginal medicine is a neglected field of endeavor. There exist only a mere handful of brief accounts of unorthodox therapeutic practices and their development in Western societies. I shall seek, there- fore, to provide a contribution to this scant literature, in the belief that such studies are not only of intrinsic interest but also provide insight into a number of strains and tensions generated by advanced industrial societies and into some of the less orthodox methods of coping with them. This essay offers an account of a marginal therapeutic system, Dianetics, which briefly emerged into prominence in the early 1950s.' Dianetics was the discovery of L. Ron Hubbard, an individual with a colorful past who began in 1948 and 1949 to formulate a theory of mental functioning and a therapeutic practice, with which he experimented on a small group of followers in New Jersey. Among these followers was a book publisher and the editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, John W. Campbell. Campbell, a. man of considerable influence on the magazine's substantial readership, had a persistent sinusitis condition that was al- leviated by Dianetics. He thereafter actively promoted the theory in his magazine (Campbell 1949, p. 80). 1. This article is based on extensive research into Dianetics and Scientology undertaken by the author. This research involved interviews with members and former members, the use of questionnaires, and the examination of a wide range of documentary sources. The study was funded in part by a generous grant from the Social Science Research Council.
