International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN (Online): 2319-7064 Impact Factor (2012): 3.358 Food and Feeding Habits of Two Freshwater Catfish, Mystus cavasius and Xenentodon cancila from Chambal River (M.P) Jaya Chaturvedi1, Deepa Singh Parihar2 1, 2 Aquatic Biology Laboratory, Jiwaji University Gwalior (M.P.), India Abstract: The food and feeding habits of freshwater catfish, Mystus cavasius and Xenentodon cancila were analysed on the basis of methods i.e., percent numerical count and percent frequency occurrence. The results from the analysis of gut contents of these two fresh water catfishes shows that both of the fish, M. cavasius and X. cancila depends mainly on the animal material i.e., zooplankton, crustaceans, round worms, insects, parts of insect, insects larvae and mollusc. The results from the study also reveal that plant material contributes the equal portion of the diet. M. cavasius has been categorised as eury-omnivorous as it feeds on wide range of diet including both the vegetable as well as animal diet but on the basis of biomass of food material, animal material contributes a major portion of the diet hence it may be pointed out as carnivore in its feeding habit. The gut contents of X. cancila consist of large portion of animal material in biomass and plant materials is in lesser proportion hence this comes in the category of carnivorous fish. Empty stomach were observed in May and June (pre-spawning period) due to bigger size of the gonads which occupying larger space in the body cavity and allowed a little space for the food. -

This study also intended to show food preference and feeding habits of M. vittatus which may reflect the availability of prey items in coastal waters of Bangladesh. Among the wide variety of prey consumed, fishes (47.08%) were the most important dietary component of this species. The next major food group was diatoms (12.08%) followed by insects (11.75%), green algae (8.75%), crustaceans (5.67%), blue green algae (3.67%), plant matter (2.67%), worms (2.67%), copepods (0.58%), mollusks (0.92%). There was a monthly variations noticed in the percentage composition of the food items. The outcome of the study facilitates the examination of complex food and feeding pattern of fishes and identifies groups of species that use similar resources within a specific community and can serve as a reference for feeding ecology of fishes in highly impacted tropical habitats. Identifikasi ikan hingga level spesies secara akurat sangat diperlukan. DNA barcoding adalah teknik identifikasi baru, cepat dan akurat. Identifikasi dengan pendekatan genetik ini akan membantu dalam memahami struktur stok, manajemen sumberdaya ikan dan konservasi. Identifikasi spesies ikan dilakukan secara molekuler. Gen CO1 diamplifikasi dan produk PCR disekuensing serta dianlisis dengan menggunakan software bioinformatika. Salah satu contoh identifikasi ikan dari genus Mystus yang telah dikonfirmasi adalah Mystus nigriceps menjadi Mystus singaringan. Kata Kunci : Identifikasi, Mystus, DNA barcoding PENDAHULUAN Ikan air tawar di Indonesia yang telah diidentifikasi sekitar 1218 spesies dari 84 famili termasuk 1172 spesies asli dari 79 famili dan 630 spesies bersifat endemik. The fish were obtained from local fishermen. A total of188individualsof M. nigriceps consisted of 68 males and 120 females (103-195 mm total length and 15-72g weight) were investigated. Female had total length, body weight and body depth greater than male (P<0.001). Dealing with the catches, more than 22% of male falls within the range of 130 and 149 mm TL, and 30.00% of female found between 260 and 279 mm TL. The heaviest male (19.12%) and female (23.33%) weighed between 30 and 49 g. The ratio of body weight to total length of M. nigriceps in the present study was higher than other Mystus species from different geographical regions. The mean condition factor of female was significantly higher than male (P<0.05) with the respective values of 1.28±0.13 and 1.21±0.12. The fish samples were in moderate condition and grew negatively allometric (b=2.5010-2.7154). -

But the catfish aquaculture including Mystus sp has not been developed extensively for its aquaculture potential even though the demand of catfishes in the Indian domestic markets are very high. Therefore for good aquacultural practices and to maintain a healthy gene pool, detailed knowledge on the population structure of Mystus sp. is needed. In the present study molecular and morphological analysis of a population of Mystus vittatus caught from four different freshwater bodies of Assam about 100-400 km away from each other was done using RAPD markers. Total 412 RAPD fragments were generated using nine decamer primers of arbitrary nucleotide sequences. In the experiment 322 polymorphic bands and 90 monomorphic bands were produced which shows 78.15% of polymorphism and 21.84% of monomorphism. UPGMA dendrogram constructed on the basis of genetic distance formed three distinct clusters indicating comparatively higher level of genetic variations in the studied M. -

CATFISH Hearing the name catfish probably makes most readers think of the walking catfish (Clarias batrachus) so common in the markets along the Mekong river, or the Giant Catfish (Pangasianodon gigas), one of the biggest freshwater fishes in the world. But the group of catfishes (the order Siluriformes) actually includes at least 31 families and some 2200 species. The majority of these species, however, are endemic to South America. The approximately 125 catfish species, so far recorded in the Mekong basin, belong to 11 families: Bagrid catfishes (Bagridae), sheatfishes (Siluridae), schilbeid catfishes (Schilbeidae), river catfishes (Pangasiidae), sisorid catfishes (Sisoridae), torrent catfishes (Amblycipitidae), beaded catfishes (Akysidae), airbreathing catfishes (Clariidae), airsac catfishes (Heteropneustidae), sea catfishes (Ariidae), and eel-tail catfishes (Plotosidae). As might be expected from such a large group, there is considerable variation in size and shape. Adult beaded catfish species, for example, will only be a couple of centimeters long, while the giant catfish can reach 300 cm. The elongated body without scales, the flattened head with small eyes and barbels (whiskers), and usually the presence of stout spines in dorsal and pectoral fins, sometimes together with protective covering of bony plates, normally makes it easy to recognize a catfish when you see it. The taxonomic relationship between catfishes and carps is evident from the many characters shared by the two groups eg. the Weberian apparatus, fear scent and presence of barbels (see Catch and Culture sup. 1). Barbels in catfishes however, are more conspicuous and more numerous (1-4 pairs). Other differences are that the jaws in catfishes have teeth, while carps are toothless. -

Abstract: Diet and dietary habits of African Butter Catfish Schilbe mystus (Linne, 1766), an economically important fish in Oyan and Asejire lakes (Southwest Nigeria) were examined between July 2000 and December 2001. Stomach contents were analysed using the numerical, frequency of occurrence and points methods. The fish is predatory but the diet differs among lakes and seasons. Insects were more important in the diet of small (<than 18 cm) fish. There were also differences in the quantity of food encountered in the stomachs of male and female S. mystus in both habitats. Page, Curator of Fishes, Florida Museum of Natural History Abstract Understanding the evolution of organismal form is a primary concern of comparative biology, and inferring the phylogenetic history of shape change is, therefore, a central concern. Shape is one of the most important and easily measured elements of phenotype, and shape is the result of the interaction of many, if not most, genes. The evolution of morphological traits may be tightly linked to the phylogeny of the group. Thus, it is important to test the phylogenetic dependence of traits to study the relationship between traits and phylogeny. My dissertation research has focused on the study of body shape evolution using geometric morphometrics and the ability of geometric morphometrics to infer or inform phylogeny. For this I have studied shape change in Mystus (Siluriformes: Bagridae) and North American cyprinids. Mystus Scopoli 1771 is a diverse catfish group within Bagridae with small- to medium-sized fishes. Out of the 44 nominal species worldwide, only 30 are considered to be part of Mystus. Mystus is distributed in Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Vietnam, Sumatra, Java and Borneo.
