Turkwaz is a unique combination of four singers, immersed in diverse traditions. Each performer brings a special flavour to the group: Maryem draws on her Tom Wilson A three-time JUNO winning musician with multiple gold records, Tom Wilson has written for and recorded songs with Sarah McLachlan, City and Arabic language heritage, Jayne and Sophia bring their experience with Greek music, and Brenna adds her Turkish fascination. Less than six weeks after its inception, UTGC Jackie Richardson is an electrifying, award-winning actress and one of Canada's foremost singers of gospel, blues, and jazz whose career includes performances had its first major performance at Toronto’s Hart House Theatre. The sold out concert also showcased some of the best college gospel choirs from the state of New in concert, radio, television, and recordings. She is performing with a star-studded cast in SING! in Concert – Primetime: SING! Salutes Vegas in this year’s festival York. Jackie celebrated Canada's 150th Birthday with many performances, style, evoking her classical roots and blending them with her love of jazz, art-song, folk, and pop. After completing her masters in Jazz at London’s Guildhall School but her proudest moments include the Gala Concert “A Place To Stand: A Celebration of 150 of Music and Drama, Joanna moved to NYC where she forged an indelible musical path, collaborating with musicians including Dan Tepfer, Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Years of Ontario and Canada” hosted by The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario at Roy Thomson Werner, Sam Newsome, and Lee Konitz. A master in the art of live vocal looping, Joanna creates mesmerising soundscapes to accompany her poetic lyrics. Singing with her daughter Kim Richardson continues to be her most joyful experience.

High on Jackie’s list are community and global concerns, and some of her most vital areas of support are for The Regent Park community, Pal Canada Foundation (Performers Arts Lodge), the Steven Lewis Foundation’s Grandmother’s Campaign (HIV/AIDS project), The 519, and The Princess Margaret Hospital. She is also very passionate about the need to bring more focus and support to Black Lives Matter as well as children’s and women’s issues. Now with the changing world, the focus for her and all of us is the resulting effects due to the health pandemic, but Jackie’s motto is “hope lives eternal!”.

SING! The Future: School Workshops

Each year, SING! offers middle school and high school music students the opportunity to work with renowned musicians and music educators. This year we cannot bring the students to us, so we are bringing our program to the schools – virtually. The program will include lots of opportunities for the students to actively participate and sing, learn how to protect their voices, and hear the story from renowned musician/author Tom Wilson, AND schools will receive copies of his best-selling book (based on availability). Our four-module program will be available to schools starting mid-October through the end of 2021: Tom Wilson – My Story and Search for Identity; Vocal Warm-ups with Supertonic directed by Jordan Travis; Singing Tags with Supertonic; and Voice Care with Speech Appeal registered Speech-Language Pathologists.
