CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

2015 has been a big year for Hockey Northland. We have reaffirmed our place as one of the leading associations in the country hosting the National Hockey League and National Championship combined tournaments, the first provincial association to be allocated that privilege. I am delighted to report that part way through the tournament one of Hockey NZ’s senior staff, Ian Francis (who is currently Acting Chief Executive as I write this report), said to me that Hockey Northland had “significantly lifted the bar” with the running of the NHL and that as a result we were to be allocated the tournament again in 2016.

This is a massive vote of confidence in Hockey Northland’s management team and volunteers and I salute you all for this achievement!

Our Women’s team under the guidance of Angeline Waetford played some incredible hockey throughout the tournament, reaching the final for the second year in a row. Auckland was prepared for us this time and defeated us emphatically in the final. On the Men’s side of the draw, our Northland guys fared a little better than they have in recent years. The plan is to build on the improvements made this year and do even better in 2016.

One could be forgiven for thinking that the 2015 season was all about the NHL, however we also hosted the National Maori Tournament and the National Under 15 Girls Tournament. Putting these major events on top of our “main event” which is our club season all adds up to what I described at the start of this report as “a big year for Hockey Northland.”

At this point I would like to make special mention of the Whangarei District Council events team and the tremendous assistance that they gave us in hosting and promoting these national tournaments. The NHL on its own brought in close to $1.5 million worth of economic activity to the District. Cooperation between council staff and sporting organisations helps to enhance these returns for the benefit of all of the residents of the District. Thank you one and all.

Special mention should also be made of the promotional work carried out by Sue Shepherd setting up the NHL. Sue organised sponsorship for the two additional electronic scoreboards, organised the involvement of the Information Centre in promotions at the tournament, arranged signage around the hockey centre, obtained grocery discounts and welcoming fruit baskets for participating teams and a whole host of other enhancements, such as the “Supporters Pub Crawl” that all contributed to the success of the event.

Hockey Northland is incredibly fortunate to have a skilled and dedicated team of professional staff and a huge band of skilled, enthusiastic and passionate volunteers. Without a massive input from all of these people the 2015 season would not have been the resounding success that it actually was. Many thanks to all of you.

Our age group teams generally had a successful season in their respective tournaments. These results are reported in other sections of our annual report. The older age groups to continue to be a challenge for us as our young adults leave town to further their education or job opportunities. There is no easy answer to this, however we continue to work on developing our coaching capability and promoting a culture of welcoming our young people back to the region when they are ready to come home.

NORTHLAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. | ANNUAL REPORT | 2015 5

The Future for Hockey Northland

The Hockey Northland “business” is approximately 95% club hockey and around 5% representative hockey. Neither of these components of our hockey business is mutually exclusive. In other words, you can’t have one without the other! To have a strong line-up of representative teams you need a strong club base and a strong representative presence attracts more players to your club base

Northland is the smallest of the regions on a player count with the next smallest region having three times the number of players that we have in Northland. For several years with our turfs at overcapacity we were unable to aggressively seek more players. The third turf has given us that extra capacity, though we are rapidly approaching the “House Full” sign again.

Since the additional turf came on stream we have put additional resource into coaching and recruitment. This will pay dividends over the next few years. We have also been using our limited resources to target specific areas of our coaching and training programs to build the skills and fitness of our rep squads. It is anticipated that this additional focus on our people should lead to better performances at representative level.

Thanks

I have already thanked a number of people who were closely associated with the NHL programme and tournament and I now want to thank a great number of other people who have been closely associated with the success of Hockey Northland in 2015. This includes all those enthusiastic volunteers who organised the clubs, coach club teams, select representative teams, manage representative teams, coach representative teams, umpire the games, sit on various committees and so on. The list is endless.

A very special thank you to Grant McLeod and his staff team at all levels who work very hard to keep our competitions functioning smoothly, our facilities looking so good that we can all be proud of them, feed us and look after us at the bar. In a simple thank you in a report like this it is very hard to do justice to all those people.

Thank you to all of Our Board members who have supported me and the association through this year. Whilst we don’t always get everything right, Hockey Northland has very few peers in the National hockey family of associations. We have a great deal to be proud of

A very big thank you to all of our commercial sponsors and supporters. We consider you to be part of our team and worked very hard to try and ensure that you enjoy your involvement with our sport.

This is the first year with our new format of split AGM and election of officers so we hope that it works well. We changed our financial year from the end of September to the end of December to time in better with the wrapping up of the representative season at the end of the club season. However, making the end of the financial year coinciding with the end of the calendar year meant that we needed to elect our offices for the new season and set our fees for the new season before our financial accounts could be completed. So we now have a Special General Meeting at the end of November to elect our officers and set the fees. This will be followed by the AGM in June coinciding with the June Club Council Forum.

Wishing everybody all the very best for a successful 2016 season.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT

The 2015 Hockey year will be looked at as a huge year. We hosted many events with the Canada Women using the Hockey Northland venue as a training camp in January followed by test matches through to the Maori tournament at Labour weekend as well as all our normal hockey activities.

Staff

Hockey Northland has had a few changes in 2015 with Bevan Gibbs and Nick Phillips resigning during the year. Both of these staff members have served Northland well with Bevan in the coaching role having coached thousands of players and coaches during his 10 years’ service and Nick has quietly gone about his role as caretaker to ensure that the Whangarei ITM Hockey Centre is the best maintained facility in the country. We thank both Bevan and Nick for their service and wish them well in their future endeavours. Brad and Lloyd both continue to grow in their individual roles and they complement each other very well, their willingness to muck in to assist in areas outside of their specific roles is really appreciated. Natalie, Gail and Danielle continue to administer our ever growing sport. The countless hours that they do over and above their allocated hours are an amazing testament to their dedication and caring attitude. At the time of writing we are currently in the process of appointing a Performance manager that will be involved with coaching players, coaches and assisting in getting good results for our teams. Communication continues to be a real focus of the Hockey Northland staff and we appreciate the communication that the members have made with Hockey Northland.

Volunteers

2015 saw the Umpires Council continue to make progress with a stable Executive ensuring good continuity. This has ensured a continued sharing of the workload and if this can be maintained we will see the benefits of their work in the future. Congratulations to Pauline Johnson and those involved in the excellent junior umpires programme. This programme is envied by other Associations Nationally and by other codes within Northland. To those that umpired this year whether in the premier, collegiate, junior or social grades thank you so much.

To the various committees that oversee many areas of Hockey Northland thanks to those who give up their time freely to ensure that the hockey runs smoothly, for those of you looking in from outside we encourage you to put your hand up to assist these committees where possible.

The continued efforts of the volunteers in Hockey Northland are extremely essential to the health of the Association. Whether they are coaches, managers, club administrators that are ensuring that their club/teams are the best they can be or it is an individual who volunteers to assist in any area of Hockey Northland your efforts are greatly appreciated and we cannot thank you enough.

Once again Hockey Northland ran its Open Grade Volunteers dinner, these people are nominated by their club for the volunteer work that they do for their club or team, and those that attended really seemed to appreciate the evening.

Facilities

This year we were able to focus on further enhancing our already outstanding facility with the addition of electronic scoreboards on the Real Deal Tyres Turf and the Currie Electrical turf (thanks to the Shepherd Family trust, Avoca Fertilisers and New World for their support in these projects). Many people will often mention to me the safe environment that Hockey Northland provides for its community. Once people are in the gate they know they and their families are in a safe area. I would like to thank Nick Phillips for his role of caretaker, as the facility is used more, then the

NORTHLAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. | ANNUAL REPORT | 2015 7

demands on the caretaker are increased. Brendon Quaid has continued on as the Bar Manager and I thank him and his staff for their professional approach to the bar operation and for their diligence to the host responsibilities. Pat Storey came to the rescue during the year to operate the Kitchen and proved to be a great asset and developed a fantastic rapport with our members. We look forward to Pat’s return in 2016.

Competitions

Congratulations must go to the Mark Cromie Holden Northland Women for their 2nd place finish in the “K Cup”, well done to the team, Angeline Waetford (Coach) and Julia Lecky (Manager) for a successful campaign. Our other High performance teams have not had such good results. U15 Boys in fourth place and Collier Trophy in third place coached by Angus Lindsay and Grant Croft respectively were the standout results for 2015. We look forward to progressing these teams and our other teams to better results in 2016. Congratulations to all our athletes on representing Northland. To those players that attained National honours congratulations, mention must be made of the countless hours that these players practice and train to play at this level.

Premier Club competitions for the first time in a few years were on the same finals day as the lower open grade competitions. This made it an appropriate finale to the year for our open grade club season. Congratulations to the winners and all those that competed in 2015. Thanks to all the clubs/teams for their input into the season and efforts during the year.

Collegiate competitions saw a merging of the days so all collegiate hockey was played on Tuesday nights. 26 teams in total competed in the 2015 collegiate season. We continued with two weeks of grading and unfortunately we had a few teams that did not attend and so this made ensuring that the teams were in the correct grade rather difficult. This year Clubs again appear to be taking on more responsibility when appointing their players to umpire the collegiate grades. Special thanks for Neal Martin and Gail Ambler who undertook the challenge of being available for the tough games.

Junior hockey continues to grow and many have adjusted well to the game formats that align with Hockey New Zealand’s small sticks programme. Feedback on the Small Sticks programme has been positive with a marked increase in skill level across many of the grades. Coach development is a continuing area of focus for our coaching staff; we need to give the coaching tools to the team coaches to ensure this increased development continues.

“Pay for Play” competitions continue to grow with summer, senior twilight and junior twilight competitions all being well subscribed to. The summer competitions are now at 46 teams which is tremendous considering that 4 years ago we started with 5 teams initially, there has been a decline in twilight numbers as players choose between the options available. These Pay for Play competitions are great opportunities for clubs to use as a recruitment option for their winter teams.

Events

Canadian Women’s teams visited for a ten day camp at the end of January. We then hosted the Blacksticks Women V Canada Women a week later at rather short notice for 3 internationals. Very good crowd support for the Thursday match with Waitangi weekend playing a part in the crowd numbers on Saturday and Sunday. NHL and National Seniors were hosted in September. This was the first time that the NHL has been played outside of the main centres this century. A truly amazing event with positive comments from all concerned around the Premier national event in the Hockey New Zealand calendar. The economic impact to the Whangarei District was significant with 34 teams competing. The Venues and Events team from the Whangarei District council were outstanding in their support and knowledge of these major events. One week after the NHL we hosted the National U15’s Girls competition, once again with the facilities in great condition following

NORTHLAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. | ANNUAL REPORT | 2015 8

the NHL we received positive response from all involved. Labour weekend saw Northland Hosting the New Zealand Maori tournament for the first time in six years. The input of the staff and volunteers into these events was outstanding and in no small way created amazing events that will hopefully stay in the visitors memories for a long time to come.

Board

Thanks to the Board for their vision, guidance and diligence during the year, this has had a very positive effect on the direction that Hockey Northland is going in. I thank all the Board members for their input and time into creating a leading Hockey region in New Zealand. To Bill Shepherd thank you for the leadership and experience that you have provided to Hockey Northland and the support that you have given to me personally during the year.

Commercial Partners

Hockey Northland continues to have a large group of very supportive Commercial Partners that provide us with a tremendous base that we can work with. The levels of sponsorship that we have at this venue are by far and away ahead of other Associations around the country. As we near capacity with our Hoarding space we will be looking at other opportunities to grow. Andy Mayhew our Marketing Manager continues with his excellent work in ensuring that we add value to what the sponsors get and he also provides much support in the way that we can promote the sponsors business. The breakfast networking opportunities we have run this year have been well supported by a small group of sponsors.

Thank you to all of the hockey community that made the 2015 hockey year what it was. I hope you all continue to be involved in Hockey in 2016 and beyond.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Financial Results

The Northland Hockey Association Inc changed its balance date during the last calendar year, adopting 31 December in place of 30 September as its balance date going forward. Therefore this report is for the 15 months, 1 October 2014 to 31 December 2015.

This report is based on the draft Annual Accounts which are currently with the auditors.

Comparative figures are the revised budget for the 15 month period and the audited results for the previous 12 month period ended 30 September 2014. The 2014 financial year was unusual, as it included the significant grants received for the construction of the new astro-turf completed that year. (Prior years generally recorded non-cash net losses after financial depreciation; the latter has increased significantly owing to the Currie Turf cost of $1.6M.)

For the 15 month period, operating revenue exceeded the revised budget for 15 months by $68,000 or 5.8% whilst operating expenditure also exceeded budget, by 6.5%. Overall, to achieve a net operating surplus of $24,839 during this unusual reporting period that included two quiet summer periods is a positive result. As for past years (except 2014), the financial formality of recognising the statutory depreciation charge has resulted in a net, or non cash loss of $218,816.

The balance sheet records a continuing strong financial position with net equity at 95.5% of total assets of $3.174 million.

Key revenues and expenditures compared with budget are disclosed in the Operating Statement on page 6 of the Financial Statements and the Notes to the Accounts (pages 8 – 10). In summary as follows:

Actual $ Budget $

Income 1,231,348 1,163,309

Expenses (1,206,509) (1,132,550) Surplus before depreciation 24,839 30,758

Less non-cash depreciation cost (243,655) Not budgeted

Net Surplus/(Loss) for Year (218,816) 30,758

Transfer to Reserves (34,149) (24,454)

Transfer to Members Funds $(252,965) $(2,101)

Cash Position

Total cash and deposits at 31 December 2015 amounted to $144,943 compared with $241,211 in 2014, which included remaining grants for the 2014 turf. Current assets, including cash total $176,120, less liabilities of $105,507, provide a positive working capital that includes the final repayment of the term loan due on 1 June 16.

NORTHLAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. | ANNUAL REPORT | 2015 10

Reserve Funds

The Reserve Funds form part of Members Equity (or Accumulated Funds) was adjusted for the maintenance reserves drawn during the last period. Members’ Funds/Equity at 30 September 2015 total $3,031,150 (2014 = $3,251,251) with the decrease reflecting the net loss after Depreciation. The Balance Sheet (p 7) and Notes 11 and 12 on page 10 detailed these changes

COACHING & DEVELOPMENT REPORT

It was a good and busy year for Hockey Northland and our entire membership.

We successfully hosted two international coaches throughout the year in an attempt to extend our local coaches’ knowledge of the game. Firstly we had Mick Evans (the 2014 Northland Men’s NHL coach) return and work with individual players as well as coaches. Mick’s visit was at the beginning of the local season. We also had David Bell come over towards the end of our local season to spend some time with our Goal Keepers, Coaches and was also able to assist our Hatch, Collier and U15 representative teams before their tournaments. Using these external resources was found very valuable and will be looked at for future years to become a more regular occurrence.

With Bevan moving on just after the U18 Regional Tournament held at North Harbour in July, the rest of the representative programme was looked after by the remaining staff. Most of the representative season went well, for the most part, and Hockey Northland will look to improve in the areas where there was any shortfall.

Representative results worth special mention:  Tai Tokerau Wahine A – 1st place  NHL Women – 2nd place  National Senior Women – 2nd place  Tai Tokerau Tane A – 3rd place  Collier Girls – 3rd place  U15 Boys – 4th place

The full details and results can be found in the Managers’ Reports.

The Canadian vs Black Sticks Test Series, the NHL and the Maori Tournament were also successfully hosted in Whangarei and we look forward to having the NHL back in 2016.

Many thanks again to Bevan Gibbs who, after many years of service to Hockey Northland, decided to move on to new challenges.

A very big thank you to all the Volunteers who give of their own time to make the hockey community as successful as it is. Onward and upward and we look forward to many more great years ahead.

COMMUNITY HOCKEY MANAGER REPORT

As I am sure has been mentioned already, this has been a very busy year for Hockey Northland. The hosting and organising of events took up a major part of our calendar and resources. It was amazing however, to host such an array of events.

Player Retention

With records now being updated in more detail for the younger age groups (i.e. juniors), a better understanding can be formulated as to the barriers we face and which ones most greatly affect Northland hockey players.

This is an ongoing development and attempting to break down barriers to keep players involved in the game as well as making it enticing and easier for new players to join in, will be continuously reviewed in 2016 and onwards.

Umpires Council

The Umpires Executive has been involved in the planning and governance on behalf of all the umpires within Hockey Northland. Being invited to attend meetings as well as being involved with the Umpires Executive over the last couple of years, has been a great help in coordinating and improving the relationship with Hockey Northland.

Umpire allocations have once again been a testing and massive task over the season and potential alternatives are being looked at in order to alleviate the pressures of this being laid on the shoulders of a limited few.

I would like to thank all those involved with umpiring, as it is not always the easiest job to turn up and do, week after week.

Clubs

One of the biggest dealings with clubs has been the registration process.

The detail within the registration process is necessary to uphold some of the rulings within the Club Council Policy and to ensure the competitions are run in line with the rules already put in place by the clubs. This information is also used to communicate to specific groups as well as to gather data around player retention amongst other things. Accuracy is therefore paramount in order to achieve certain outcomes throughout the season.

By attempting to deliver the constant message to clubs, to look at planning for the 2016 season towards the end of the 2015 season or at least before the end of 2015, we hope to decrease any issues that seem to arise with the registration process.

A “Club” tab will be created on the Hockey Northland website, to include helpful information and time saving tips for 2016. By providing this type of information, we hope to make it easier for volunteers to give their time as well as trying to make it less “scary” to put their hand up to assist.

Participation

We have reached more schools and are increasing our participation numbers annually. This will also be the case for 2016 and flow into even greater attendance to the Festival Days we host during the year.

Development Camps were well attended and with a new Performance Manager coming on board it will be exciting to see what happens in 2016. NORTHLAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. | ANNUAL REPORT | 2015 13

Winter hockey is steadily growing and the demand for more turf training times means that there is very little turf time available.

Other Areas

Membership Surveys have been undertaken in the last two years with the base questions being the same in order to have comparative data to look at for 2014 and 2015. I would urge more members to participate in these opportunities as we only get a small portion of the membership providing us with feedback.

Overall feedback has been positive, although we do not always get everything right, Hockey Northland has areas that we can now address to improve moving forward.

Bay of Islands Hockey Association is doing very well heading in to 2016. More volunteers and players looking to be part of the association is very exciting. This has come about from a greater involvement from adults and the growth in the Senior / Open Grade Competition. Hockey Northland is looking forward to being involved in the growth of the Bay of Islands in the future.

Northland Teams, Management and Representative Athletes featured prominently within the awards arena, with many outstanding performances in 2015.

Going into 2016, let’s all remember the reason we are here, to be involved in hockey, whether we are playing, volunteering or spectating. This is a great place to be playing hockey and as a collective group, we can keep improving together. I look forward to what 2016 will hold. Let’s do it together and let’s have a great time doing it.

PARTICIPATION OFFICER REPORT

2015 was a year of many changes and challenges for me, my role and the tasks that I was required to undertake or help out with in the Association. With the help of Kayla Gentil, Assistant Participation Officer (Feb-Jul 2015), we were able to continue to grow the successful ActivePost Small Sticks Programme. The Junior hockey season was again a great success highlighted by growth and increased development. The departures of Kayla, and Bevan Gibbs (Coachforce Coach) in the middle of the year, increased the workload, and broadened my work streams for the last 6 months. I was able to continue to work in Participation, while also becoming involved in Development, Representative and the coaching of National U18 Squad Members.

The In-schools programme kept it’s maximum limit of 15 Contracted schools and we added 13 Taster schools. This was completed without an Assistant for the second half of the year. We kept our reach at over 5000 Year 1-8 children in Northland. We have begun to build new relationships in potential schools for 2016 and keep the current schools actively involved in participation events. The Bay of Islands Festival Day was run again with 12 teams and over 100 kids. The big in-schools outcome success was the Hockey Northland Year 4-6 Festival Day which attracted 83 teams, over 600 kids and 200 parents/teachers/helpers. This event was well supported by ActivePost and Hockey NZ. We will be able to reach new schools in 2016, and with a new Assistant Participation Officer, our reach into the community, will too, increase.

The In-Association Small Sticks modules ran successfully again this season with a highlight being the reintroduction of the Kwik Sticks Development Grade being well contested and offered as an opportunity for smaller clubs to play in the Year 7 & 8 age group. The Funsticks (Novice Hockey) Programme was again a massive success with the support from members of the Stirling Sports Hockey Academy. We had over 76 different 4-6 year olds attend at least 3 sessions of this 14 week programme and the feedback has all been extremely positive. The continued alignment to HNZ’s ideal Small Sticks modules has increased the competitiveness within playing grades and created a more even competition.

As the year progressed, I became more involved with the Development side of business running Year 3-6, U13, U15 and U18 development camps as well as involving myself with various representative teams as a specialist Goal Keeper coach. We ran 2 x Year 3-6 development programmes in the schools holidays in 2014 with great success in skill improvement and participation. We have also run 4 x U13 and U15 development camps and the increased participation at this level was shown in the number of Age-group representative trialists. My work with the various teams allowed me to use some of the skills & knowledge I have outside Participation and I hope to further this work in 2016 and continue my growth with coaching and collaboration.

CLUB COUNCIL REPORT

The 2015 Hockey season was very busy from the start to the finish with lots of exciting games from Internationals to the NHL / NST combined and NZ Maori tournament to finish the season. Hope lots of our hockey family got to see some great hockey being played at home.

The Club Council Executive had a reasonably routine season with not too much controversy to deal with. I think this is because it has been operating now for a good number of years (13 or so) and all the clubs are able to contribute to how hockey is run and governed at home.

You, the clubs are the ones that set the rules at the start of the year for the current season.

Hockey in Whangarei and Northland has grown considerably in the past couple of years and it is always great to hear so much positive feed-back from outside members about how well our local association is run and how many different options are available to play hockey.

Again I would like to thank the Club Council Executive members: Maree Williams, Tanya Currie, Luke Gillingham, Diane Dowling and Grant McLeod who take the time to attend the monthly meetings to ensure that hockey is running smoothly. Also the many staff members from the office who also put time in managing the various questions and problems that frequently occur.

2016 will see Hockey Northland hosting the NHL / NST tournaments again and that is a real credit to all the people involved this year that made it a real friendly and efficiently run event.

See you all next year.

BAY OF ISLANDS HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

With the BOI Hockey Association Constitution in place and the 2015 Strategic Plan drawn up Bay Of Islands Hockey were set for a great year and we are pleased to let the FNDC and Northland Hockey Association know that we achieved our goals for the season reaching 301 registered players and more volunteers in this year’s 2015 Hockey Season.

With 22 of those players playing 2 grades (Collegiate and Open Grade), we reached a total of 323 players playing in this year’s season.

% Increase in number of registered hockey players

175 players in 2008 when the turf was established – 2015 301 plyers an increase of 72% 271 players in 2014 – 301 players 2015 = increase of 11% this year. 2014-2015 Senior Winter Hockey saw a 30% increase in adults

2014-2015 Senior Summer Hockey saw an increase of players from 36 players to 88 = 144%

Also the new Web site has enabled us to see that we had over 5000 hits this season.

Year 1 – 7 (JMC)

Our primary school numbers stayed consistent this year with the Mini Sticks (4teams), Kiwi Sticks Development (4 teams) Kiwi Sticks year 5 &6 (4 teams) and the Kwik Sticks grade (4teams) - for the first time being able to play a full field tournament.

Collegiate and Open Grade

Collegiate Hockey was run on a Wednesday night and the Open Grade on Thursday night.

The Collegiate Grade proved to be an awesome season with Kaikohe Christian School leading the competition and Springbank, Okaihau (2 teams) and Kerikeri High School providing competitive hockey.

This was a mixed full field competition that has some promising players moving up to the Open Grade next year.

The Open Grade, a mixed full field 11aside competition was the high light of the year. BOI Hockey for the first time in over 15 years plus was able to run an adult competition. This competition did not fail to bring great hockey, sportsmanship and rivalry. From one night to the other this fast and furious competition with no one being able to predict from game to game who would win the night and our trophies have been evenly shared.

The Open Grade was made up of five teams (Springbank, Kaikohe Hockey Club, Waipapa Hockey Club and Northland Renegades and an Okaihau College team.

Collegiate and Open Grade totalling 132 registered players. 22 of these players playing in both the collegiate grade and Open grade totalled 154 players in these competitions

As more adults sign up to hockey in the north, BOI Hockey hopes for the future is to go to a women’s and men’s competition!

Umpiring & Coaching Development

Bay Of Islands hockey saw an increase in Umpires this year with the Open Grade well catered for.

With the Adult Hockey starting to blossom, this has bought forth more adults to volunteer their time and we had a record number of participants at Coaching Courses and Umpiring Courses run by Bay Of Islands Hockey Association. It was fantastic too having Mel Oaken come up and run an umpiring course for our senior umpires and they found this very valuable training and support. Mel and Vicky then did a follow up visit and came and gave valuable advice to some of our umpires resulting in a stronger confidence for them, which was very much needed in our very competitive competitions.

% Increase in number of volunteers associated with the turf

2014 = 41; 2015 = 47 (15% increase)

BOI Representative Teams

This year our 7&8 Representative coaches were Nicola Phillips and Rob Titter, and our 5&6 coaches were Claire Edmonds and Shane Munford. We are entirely grateful to these awesome coaches for stepping up and doing a superb job with our representative teams.

Also for the first time BOI Hockey was able to enter a Men’s team into the Inter Association tournament down in Whangarei. They all really enjoyed the day and proudly bought the trophy home! The women’s team were also raring to go and had selected 4 of our top collegiate players who play in the BOI Open Grade. Disappointingly these players were not allowed to play in the tournament and the decision was made to withdraw from the tournament as the BOI Women’s team wanted to represent with players who play within the BOI Hockey Association.

It is with much thanks to Brett Morris for putting together and training the men’s team, we also thank Alicia Craig for all of her efforts in putting together the women’s team and for also going down and participating for BOI team that was put together with players that live in the Bay but play in the Whangarei Competition. It was wonderful to see you win that too!

2016 Season

It is with much thanks to Brett Morris our Chairman, Lynette Knight our Secretary, and all of our hard working officials, committee members, coaches, and umpires that we can contribute the success of this year’s competition too. This 2015 season being the best that BOI Hockey Association has had since the turf was established in 2008.

This year has been great start to a promising future in the Bay Of Islands and members of the Association are excited about the 2016 Season which promises to be an even better one!

2015 National Masters Tournament

The 2015 National Masters Hockey tournament was hosted by Hawkes Bay Hockey Association. Northland sent three women’s teams and had several individual Northland men representing for other areas. Final placing’s: W35 5th, W45 3rd and W55s 5th.

Congratulations to all those players from Northland that were selected and in particular the first timers into Masters this year. The three teams that did compete were outstanding and to be placed in the top four of any age group is by no means an easy task.

2015 Trans-Tasman Challenge

There were a number of Northland masters players that were selected to attend the Trans -Tasman Challenge in Melbourne (May 2015) they were: Steve Shepherd (45+M), Shannon Shepherd (35+W), Linda Anderson (50+W), Cheryll Pitman (50+W), Vicki Wright (50+W) and Merv Bint & Rose Nicholl (Umpires)

Masters Hockey is a fun and exciting competition that caters for players of all abilities, whether you're fiercely competitive or are just looking for a run around with mates. The bonuses of going all over New Zealand to play, catching up with new friends you have met on the circuit and a second chance at representing New Zealand. We have local umpires that participate every year, they get to umpire some top notch games, which adds to their portfolio and experience. At a local level we need to encourage master’s players to participate in these tournaments, it’s a great pre-season start for your Club. It’s a hard week playing a full game each day. Every Monday at 6pm we have a masters get together to have a game, you do not need to be going to Nationals it can be just a game with other masters players pre-Xmas.

Big thank you again to the council members and welcome to the newly elected Masters Council for 2014/2015 and all the volunteers that put their hands up each year to co-ordinate the teams.

DOMINOS PIZZA NORTHLAND HOCKEY UMPIRES

The Northland Hockey Umpire’s Council for 2015 has been Merv Bint, Vicki Allen, Mel Oakden, Carol Cottam, Pauline Johnson, Sandra Nink and is chaired by Alan Lints.

A huge thank you to Lloyd Gurr for his work liaising with Northland Hockey and the Umpires Council.

With the securing of a Sponsor ‘Domino’s Pizza’ the umpires have been out in new uniforms and jackets looking more professional (and getting requests for orders!)

This season has seen 32 umpires in our Senior Open Grades including 4 coming through from the Junior Programme continuing the sustainability of umpires for our games. It is pleasing to see players come into the umpiring fold and take up the whistle.

Open forums for clubs, coaches and umpires have continued through the year to keep the communication between players, coaches and umpires, rules understanding and interpretation and a level of consistency from the umpires. These have been well attended and have opened dialogue not just around rules but other factors that affect players and umpires and how to manage themselves. Clubs have been asked to contribute to the topics discussed in these forums.

For the umpires the draw and non-appearance of umpires at games is something that is being addressed. At this stage the draw is done manually and is time consuming due to the complexity of our umpires other commitments to hockey i.e. they umpire, play, coach etc, The council is investigating new technology to attempt to stream line the draw appointments, notification of the draw and address the issue of finding a replacement when no umpire is available.

As well as the weekly commitment to club games there is the rep calendar to attend to and this has seen umpires step up for many more games each week to ensure that the Northland Hockey Teams have umpires on their games where possible. Unfortunately at this stage we are lacking in umpires to do the Under 15 age group as those who would umpire are playing in that age group. With the growth of the umpires moving through the grades, we hope to address this issue in the near future.

Double header weekends sees players playing one extra game, but umpires often more to cover, and this takes its toll when they are required week after week to do this. Despite trying to limit the number of games umpired each week we have had umpires who have umpired over 70 games this season!

During the season a Level 1 Accreditation course for umpires was held with Colin French from NZ Hockey. This was attended by Club umpires who wish to upskill and also attain accreditation to continue on their umpiring pathway with New Zealand.

Having NHL in the North has also meant that a team of umpires, and non umpires have trained and worked successfully as Judges on the technical benches during the NHL and Senior Tournament games held in Whangarei. This training was led by Vicki Allen to ensure that the judges understood the role and were well practiced before the tournaments. Northland was able to put Technical Benches on every game during these tournaments.

We also participated at International and National Levels with the following achievements:

Mel Oakden:

 NZ vs Australia Test Series November 2014  NZ vs Canada Test Series February 2015  NZ vs Argentina Test Series October 2015

Vicki Allen:

We would like to acknowledge the work and the hours that our umpires put into hockey ensuring that a large percentage of our club games have umpires, that umpires are mentored, Northland teams have umpires with them where possible , and the tireless task of the draw allocations.

DEMPSTER AND HILL ELECTRICAL JUNIOR UMPIRES

The 2015 season catered for 30 juniors umpiring in the JMC Grades. It is pleasing to note the continuation of the umpires from previous seasons giving us a number of High School students umpiring our top JMC Grades. This is catering for the sustainability of Northland Hockey Umpires, with another group of young umpires moving into the Open Grades to umpire in the 2016 season.

The only flaw to this number is the lack of regular mentors and support for these junior umpires. This is an area of real concern for our Junior programme. Recruitment and retention of the junior umpires is not the problem. Finding adults to commit to the team is! The sustainability and quality of the umpiring is at risk if this programme does not recruit more adults to the role of mentor.

To Dylan Codlin, your support and guidance with current tournament experience has been great. Your commitment to the Junior programme is a credit to you.

To the families of these young umpires thank you for your support of the programme. Your positivity rubs off on the young people in the programme.

This season saw a strong group of new umpires added to the ranks of the more experienced juniors. We received many compliments about our umpires this season from parents, coaches, and other associations. The fact that 13 of these young people were also Northland Rep players, while others coached junior teams, and umpired rep games and at rep tournaments are testament to value of the programme and the commitment of these umpires.

No matter what the weather conditions, these umpires are out on the turf ready to manage the Junior Hockey games, with a willingness to receive feedback and reflect on their performances, and then select something to focus on for the next week.

The Junior umpiring programme does more than teach these young people to umpire the rules of the game of hockey, it develops confidence, gives them a different perspective and understanding of the hockey game. This in turn can have flow - on effects in their personal life and their playing.

Our umpires have keenly umpired Inter-association games and Northland rep games as well as umpiring at tournaments. They are keen to keep improving and up skilling their umpiring.

Colin French from NZ Hockey presented the Community Badge for umpires and this was well attended by the junior umpires.

Piper Mortimer and Chris Gerkhans travelled with the Collier and Hatch Development teams to the McGrath tournaments in Rotorua. Cailyn Prisk umpired at the Collier Tournament in Palmerston North and received the 5th/6th game on finals day, and Ethan Codlin and Oliver Hawker represented Northland proudly at Hatch Cup in Timaru. The Collier and Hatch umpires now hold their NZ Junior badges.

Ethan Codlin received the Hockey Official of the Year at the ASB Secondary Schools Sports Awards.

It is a pleasure to be involved with such an awesome, dedicated group of young people who are passionate about their hockey and their umpiring. It is satisfying to watch them grow as young people and develop their umpiring skills, decision making and confidence.

My wish is that others out in the Hockey family will see this and offer to help on a regular basis. These young umpires deserve more attention and direction than 2 of us can give them.

WHANGAREI JMC REPORT

2015 has been hugely successful year for Northland JMC Hockey. Player and teams numbers took a huge step forward, with 101 junior teams across the various grades and continued buy in to the HNZ Small Sticks Formats

The Shepherd & McKendry Trophies were again contested as a mixed tournament with great success. These trophies were won by KIS 1st XI Girls and Mangapai 1.

The Year 5&6 and Year 7&8 Inter Association Tournaments were played at a high level and gave the kids a great opportunity to play and compete with new players. Many thanks to both host associations and organising committees.

This year’s JMC committee was well supported with volunteers stepping up to all vacant positions and doing great work in their areas. A Dispensations/Disputes Committee was put together, and I believe this made processes for clubs easier and decisions could be made in a timely manner. We continued with Committees for Grading, Inter Association and End of Year.

The Small Sticks Junior Hockey was a great success with 18 Kwik Sticks Teams and enough players/teams to support and contest a Kwik Sticks Development Grade. This was great to give the smaller clubs and beginner players in this age group the opportunity to participate. The Kiwi Sticks Grade extended to 5 pools with increased team numbers and the Mini Sticks (and Development) continued to strive with the flow on of Funsticks numbers coming to fruition. Funsticks had a massive year again with over 120 different kids taking part.

Small Sticks Development Programmes run by Hockey Northland were well supported and were given praise by the clubs and players that attended. Northland Hockey was able to field competitive Hatch & Collier Development Teams again which is a sign of the growth and development by the associations, clubs and volunteers.

The Junior Prize-giving’s were again split, with the Year 7&8’s on Friday evening and Year 5&6’s on Saturday. This went smoothly and was very successful. It was awesome to have guest speakers – and Samantha Polovnikoff is involved with these events.

Thanks again to Pauline Johnson and Dylan Codlin for the fantastic work done with the Junior Umpires and all the time that is put in here, by Pauline, Dylan and the umpires themselves.

Once again another successful season for Northland JMC Hockey.

It was great we had the tournament in Whangarei.

We stayed at The Sierra Motel on Western Hills drive. The venue was good, it was roomy, had a swimming pool for colds, good laundry facilities and handy to the turf.

The layout of our accommodation was fine; the house was spacious, had a large lounge area which allowed us plenty of room for team meetings etc. Some of the ladies needed time to study in peace. This motel allowed them to have timeout without being on top of each other. The only one adjustment would be to place the management closer to the house. We have addressed this with the motel owner for next year 2016.

The tournament went really smoothly, we had no major problems and the ladies and management got on extremely well. We had good communication throughout the team and all the ladies were supportive of me and Angeline. I did all the meals as we had decided that the team needed to focus on their game, not preparing food.

Our Physio Aylse Morgan from M3 Clinic was outstanding; she worked hard to keep the ladies injury free.

I really enjoyed the tournament, Angeline and the ladies were fantastic it was a wonderful busy experience. The team’s performance was very good with all involved disappointed that we didn’t quite get over the last hurdle. NORTHLAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. | ANNUAL REPORT | 2015 27

The Senior Tournament week represents a key playing opportunity for those players who are not selected to the NHL teams. An amazing week with great hockey and a great team. Very unsure what to expect leading up to the tournament but we had a strong team mixed with U18 representatives and older heads from our Premier grades. The mix worked very well for us with the youth and modern skill of the young players and the maturity, skill and game knowledge from the older players. A very positive way to promote development in Northland Hockey.

Tournament experience: The team prepared well in the build-up games with all players getting opportunities to take the field. Once at tournament the team played some great attacking hockey and created many scoring opportunities, dominating field position and possession in many games. Unfortunately they were unable to capitalise on this at key times and therefore did not realise their potential. They were competitive in most games only losing by 1 or 2 goals, often a lapse of concentration near half-time. Developing players to capitalise on scoring opportunities must be a focus area for future teams.

The girls got on really well and while they didn’t achieve the results they were after they played some awesome hockey and improved with each game during the week. There was a nice blend of experienced players and those new to this level of hockey.

Northland Hatch Cup Development Boys National Tournament Placing - 7th

Our team would like to thank Paddle Board NZ for sponsoring our training shirts for the team, we looked really good as a team when we wore them and are very thankful.

The tournament in Rotorua was very well organised and ran very smoothly. Travel/accommodation worked out fine and the parent support was brilliant.

Regent New World Northland Collier Trophy Girls National Tournament Placing – 3rd

We would like to thank Regent New World for being our main sponsor - financial assistance benefits a lot of us and without the help it would be difficult to go away each year. We want to also thank Kensington Dental for providing us with team hoodies, Regent New World & IC Motor Group for providing our team training shirts.

The New World Northland Collier Girls hockey team travelled to Palmerston North during the week of 3rd to 10 October 2015 to compete in the National U/13 Collier Trophy Tournament.

The Team consisted of Grant Croft (Coach), Tracey Illerbrun (manager), Michelle Hunt (Manager), Adrienne Carswell (Manager) and 16 players. The team was relatively young and inexperienced, with seven year 7 players named and none of the players had played at the Collier Trophy level before. There were no obvious superstars in the team, just a great group of girls who all got on well together and functioned well as a team.

Under the expert guidance of Grant Croft the girls played well as a team and exceeded our expectations to finish third in the National Tournament, coming away with bronze medals and also picking up the Friendliest Team trophy. An outstanding result.

Northland Collier Development Girls National Tournament Placing – 4th

Our team would like to our Coach: Janet Webb and our amazing Manager : Kelli Adams. We cannot forget our many mums and dads that helped us each week with fundraising events that helped us greatly for the many weekends away and in particular our tournament to Rotorua.

Janet also organised some coaching from other people, including Julie Crum, and the girls learnt lots from her too. There was nothing but praise for the job Janet did with our girls, and we had a fantastic result at our tournament.
