Aria Hall of Fame - Event Partnership Program Recommendation Page 1 of 5 FINANCE AND GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE Agenda Item 5.7 REPORT 14 April 2009 ARIA HALL OF FAME - EVENT PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM RECOMMENDATION Division Commerce and Marketing Presenter Scott Chapman – Director Marketing and Commerce Purpose 1. The purpose of this report is to seek Council endorsement for funding for the sponsorship of the Australian Record Industry Awards (ARIA) Hall of Fame event scheduled to take place in Melbourne at either the Melbourne Town Hall or the Grand Hyatt Hotel in early August 2009. Recommendation from Management 2. That the Finance and Governance Committee recommends to Council that it sponsors the 2009 ARIA Hall of Fame Awards to the value $50,000. Background 3. The ARIA Hall of Fame, which was originally conceived as a part of the ARIA Awards in 1988 and held during the ARIA Awards ceremony, has inducted a diverse range of artists including AC / DC, Dame Joan Sutherland, Olivia Newton John, Johnny O’ Keefe, Paul Kelly, John Farnham, INXS, Slim Dusty, Jimmy Little and many more. 4. In July 2005 ARIA staged the inaugural ARIA Icons: Hall of Fame event, which was introduced to honour the growing number of legendary performers, producers, songwriters and others who have had an impact on music culture in Australia. In the past, time constraints had prevented any more than one or two artists from being inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame at each ARIA Awards, resulting in a lengthy waiting list of worthy recipients. 5. The ARIA Hall of Fame is now an annual stand-alone event that honours those whose musical achievements have had a significant impact in Australia and around the world. 6. The event has been held in Melbourne and sponsored by the City of Melbourne for the last three years through the City of Melbourne Event Partnership Program (EPP). 7. The live music scene in Melbourne plays an increasingly important role in the city’s economic and cultural life. The 2008 Northern Metropolitan Institute of TAFE report ‘State of Play’ examines advertising expenditure and “gig” numbers (‘gig’ refers to a music event in front of an audience). In the year 2000 $10 million was spent on advertising 47,000 gigs across Melbourne. In the twelve months from September 2007 to August 2008 a sum of $20.7 million was spent on advertising just over 70,000 Melbourne music gigs. Page 2 of 5 8. For some years now Council Officers have been in contact with a number of key organisations in the rock/pop music industry. While Melbourne is known for the quality of its live music scene and the strength of its independent recording sector it is noted that a high percentage of major music companies are headquartered in Sydney. The staging of the ARIA Hall of Fame in Melbourne adds to an Australian recognition of the importance of Melbourne to the Music Industry. 9. In recent months the Chief Executive Officer and the Director of Marketing and Commerce have had a number of discussions with the representatives of ARIA in respect to the ARIA Hall of Fame Awards. A key focus of those discussions has been developing a strategy to understand how the ARIA Hall of Fame could become the key event in what would be a Melbourne Music Week. This week would include a range of events in and around the city including; the creation of a temporary Music Hall of Fame and exhibition at the Victoria Arts Centre, a range of industry showcase events with producers and publishers, a ‘Melbourne Conversation’ event relating to a key music industry issue, the ARIA board meeting and the ARIA Chairman’s Cocktail Party. A number of these events are planned for 2009, but the Music Week concept will need to be the subject of a more detailed plan. 10. The ARIA Hall of Fame meets the objectives for the Events Partnership Program and the criteria agreed by Council in adopting the City of Melbourne Events Strategy 2009/2010. Time Frame 11. In order to commit to staging the ARIA Hall of Fame Awards in Melbourne in August 2009 ARIA needs a commitment from the Council that it will provide sponsorship to the event of $50,000. Planning for the event needs to be escalated at the earliest time so that the event can be planned. Consultation 12. Consultation has been conducted with the events industry through the following: 12.1. the Victorian Events Industry Council (VEIC); 12.2. International Special Events Society (ISES) meetings; 12.3. Docklands Events Group, a forum representing major stakeholders in the precinct; and 12.4. post event acquittal reports and debriefings conducted in the 2008/2009 financial year. Government Relations 13. The City of Melbourne Event Sponsorship Strategy 2007 - 2010 supports the “10 Year Tourism and Events Industry Strategy” released by the State Government of Victoria in October 2006. Finance 14. The approved 2008/2009 financial year cash budget for the Event Partnership Program was $2,946,777 of which $1,406,900 was already committed in cash to triennial sponsorships. 15. This paper is recommending that $50,000 cash be pre-committed from the 2009/2010 Event Partnership Program. 2 Page 3 of 5 Legal 16. No direct legal issues arise from the recommendation from management. Sustainability 17. All events sponsored by City of Melbourne are required to submit detailed environmental impact minimisation plans and are required to adopt the Guidelines for Sustainable Events established by the City of Melbourne. 3 Page 4 of 5 Agenda Item 5.7 Finance and Governance Committee 14 April 2009 FINANCE ATTACHMENT ARIA HALL OF FAME - EVENT PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM RECOMMENDATION The recommendation contained in the report pre commits the Council to funding of $50,000 from the 2009/2010 Event Partnership Program (EPP). The 2008/09 Budget includes an allocation for the Event Partnership Program and it is expected that this program will be included with a similar funding request as part of the 2009/10 Annual Plan and Budget. Sprig Of Heather June 2014 Sprig Of Heather Vol 21 No 2 June 2014 The Official Newsletter of Clan Little Society New Zealand & Australia www.littleclan.net Sprig Of Heather June 2014 As I wrote this editorial a call came in on SKYPE from a friend in Auckland. Oh how our world has changed ! We are now more inter connected through diverse technologies than at any time in History. Had our ancestors a fraction of the technologies we have today how would we have evolved? Scotland in early 1800s was a largely agricultural nation. Work was usually manual and cottage-based. A shift in this trend came with the industrial age. The industrialisation of Scotland began in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The adoption of mechanisation led to the building of factories and a move away from cottage industries. Production was linked to the use of machines as well as the establishment of the railway and canal networks, which transported the raw materials from the dockland (notably cotton) and were able to distribute the finished goods. With the arrival of the steam engine, numbers of miners increased in order to produce the coal needed to power the engines. Iron and steel works also became a major employer at the time. In Scotland the hundred years between 1840 and 1940 saw enormous change in the countries economic and social structure. Our ancestors living in 1840 would have been astounded at the scale and pace of change in the century ahead. Since the dawn of civilization, there existed a need to communicate information over distance.

With no known surviving oral tradition for how and who would make the fish -hooks and use them in this area, the historical and archaeological records become more important. What do we know? Shell fish -hooks were observed and reported on by a number of people from the First Fleet. They mention being made and used by local women. “Considering the quickness with which they are finished, the excellence of the work, if it be inspected, is admirable”, Watkin Tench said on witnessing Barangaroo making one on the north shore. First Fleet painting of fish -hook (T. Watling) The manufacturing process involved the use of a strong shell. So far the only archaeological evidence is from the Turbo species. Pointed stone files were used to create the shape and then file down the edges to the recognisable form. Use -wear analysis on files has confirmed that they were used on shell as well as wood, bone and plant material.

  • Mt. Gambier Local Wins 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award!
MEDIA RELEASE 28 November 2018 Mt. Gambier Local Wins 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award! Scott Maxwell from Grant High School in Mount Gambier is the winner of the 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year. The win was announced at the star-studded ARIA Awards, held at The Star in Sydney. The ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award is run in partnership with leading arts education organisation, The Song Room and sponsored by Telstra. It’s been a wild ride for Scott, who was selected from hundreds of submissions. His inclusion as an official ARIA Nominee was celebrated with a surprise visit by Guy Sebastian, who made the trip to Grant High School in October and sang his hit song Battle Scars with students from the music program. Since then, four nominees from across Australia have been put to a public vote, with tens of thousands from around the country showing their support for their favourite music educator. ‘Maxi’ as he is affectionately known, has transformed the music program at Grant High since he took over in 2009. There are now double the amount of music programs offered at the school, and triple the number of students enrolled in the music program. Scott’s success is attributed to his aspiration to make as many music genres accessible as possible, to adapting his teaching to suit the needs of his students, and to placing an emphasis on creating opportunities for public performances. His approach has seen the cohort at Grant High School thrive. What started as small live shows in the school canteen at lunch time, has quickly grown to full community festivals for students to perform under Scott’s guidance.

“Whiskey in the Jar”: History and Transformation of a Classic Irish Song Masters Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Dana DeVlieger, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2016 Thesis Committee: Graeme M. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process. I would also like to thank Johanna Devaney and Anna Gawboy for their valuable insight and ideas for future directions and ways to improve.

  • Book Proposal 3
Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.
