In Pigot’s Somerset Directory 1842 in the section for Bath: Housman Mrs. Catherine, 14 Sydney place The death of Christopher Deavin, aged 71, was registered 1850/Q3 Bath. In the PCC will written in 1840 he describes himself as a servant of Sydney Place and leaves everything to his wife Martha. In the 1851 census at 14 Sydney Place, Bath: Catherine Houseman, aged 79, widow, fundholder, born at Liverpool, Martha Beaven, aged 71, widow, housekeeper, born at Newbury, and three other servants. The death of Martha Deavin, aged 76, was registered 1852/Q4 Bath. The death of Catherine Houseman, aged 85, was registered 1855/Q1 Bath. From the Bath Chronicle of Thu 22 Feb 1855 p3: Feb. 19, at her residence, in Sydney Place, at a very advanced age, Mrs. Housman, an old and respected inhabitant of this city, whose loss will be sincerely regretted by the neighbouring poor. The Bath Chronicle of Thu 22 Mar 1855 p2 had an advertisement for the sale by auction of her effects. From the National Probate Calendar 1881: 29 April. The Will AGED __ of Sarah Jefferies late of the Parish of Kelston in the County of Somerset [THE] RIGHTEOUS SHALL [INHERIT THE] Spinster who died 4 March 1881 at Kelston was proved at Bristol by LAND AND DWELL [THERE FOREVER] Sophia Newman of Kelston Spinster the Niece and Alfred Piper of 202 Kentish-Town-road in the County of Middlesex Boot and Shoe Maker the Executors. Personal Estate under £3,000. The death of Sophia Newman, aged 80, was registered 1900/Q2 Keynsham. From the National Probate Calendar 1900: NEWMAN Sophia of Kelston Somersetshire spinster died 8 April 1900 Probate Bristol 1 June to Andrew Burns retired shopkeeper and William Newman shoemaker Effects £5234 14s.

    PREFACE In 1974 Enid and I decided to look for a house of our own as I was due to retire in 1976. Gloucestershire we knew was a nice county in which to live. We had certain connections with it. On our days off we frequently toured the Cotswolds, we were then living in Henley-on-Thames. Added to this, in about 1910 my father considered buying the practice at Northleach and so becoming its local doctor, however, he went to Weobley in Herefordshire. His father, James Strachan Clarke who died in 1976 aged 45 or 46 had been a tenant farmer at Ashwick Grange, Marshfield and apparently the Land Agent of the people living at Ashwick Hall. Unfortunately, the records of ownership of the Hall were destroyed in the Bristol blitz during World War II so I know nothing about them. In the parish church there is a brass plate concerning him. The name is incorrect, he is called James Stephenson Clarke, this was an error on the part of my Aunt Agnes, his eldest daughter. In 1775 a certain John Clarke married Jane Stephenson, she is alleged to be the beauty of the Clarkes (though I would think, judging from the pictures, that my wife Enid, runs her a close second and is probably ahead of her). The name Stephenson became attached to the Clarkes until the present day. After a long search we saw a photograph of our cottage in the premises of Bloss, Tippett and Taylor of Bourton-on-the-Water and in 1976 bought it from Mr.

I VENTURE to think that bishop Eeginald Fitzjocelin deserves a place of higher honour in the history of the diocese, and of the fabric of the church of Wells, than has hitherto been accorded to him. His memory has been obscured by the traditionary fame of bishop Robert as the "author," and of bishop Jocelin as the "finisher," of the church of Wells; and the importance of his episcopate as a connecting link in the work of these two master-builders has been comparatively overlooked. The only authorities followed for the history of his episcopate have been the work of the Canon of Wells, printed by Wharton, in his Anglia Sacra, 1691, and bishop Godwin, in his Catalogue of the Bishops of England, 1601—1616. But Wharton, in his notes to the text of his author, comments on the scanty notice of bishop Reginald ;a and Archer, our local chronicler, complains of the unworthy treatment bishop Reginald had received from Godwin, also a canon of his own cathedral church.b a Reginaldi gesta historicus noster brevius quam pro viri dignitate enarravit.
