Terms and conditions Introduction by the Bishop of Coventry Thank you for your interest in this post of Archdeacon Missioner in the Diocese of Coventry. I’ve been here eleven years now, and I love it. I think it’s an ideal size and shape for a Diocese, with a fascinating variety of missionary contexts, and a deep spiritual lineage stretching back to the 12th Century, when the Diocese of Lichfield relocated to Coventry. We were re-founded in 1918 when Europe was still at war, with a vision to ‘bring people to Christ’. That theme of the light of the gospel bringing hope in times of despair returned powerfully in 1940 when the Cathedral was bombed and the Diocese, led by the Cathedral’s ministry, committed itself to building a ‘kinder, simpler – a more Christ-Child-like sort of world’1. Here we are now in the 21st Century carrying on the community. Our strategy is to build up the health of the church same apostolic mission – the message and ministry of so that we will see the growth of the church, and to do that reconciliation, as Paul puts it (2 Corinthians 5.16-21) – across the Whole Diocese of church communities, church among the people of Coventry, most of Warwickshire and schools, Christian chaplaincies and the Cathedral.

    1 Sermon preached by The Right Reverend John Stroyan, Bishop of Warwick, at the funeral of Bishop Colin Bennetts on 23 July 2013 It is true, the Lord is risen. Luke 24.34 Cleopas and his companion, their eyes now opened, hurry back to the eleven and the others to tell them ‘It is true, the Lord is risen’. Then they told them what had happened on the road, how he had been with them and walked with them in their despondency and bewilderment but they didn’t know he was with them. Their testimony was of God who both reveals himself and conceals himself. Sometimes called the Paschal Mystery, it surely accords with the experience of every honest Christian. We walk by faith not by sight. Cleopas and his companion would soon no doubt be experiencing - along with the apostles and early disciples - the cost of being a witness to the resurrection of Christ, or to use the New Testament word, a ‘martyr’ to the resurrection of Christ. I say this because I know that Colin did not want, passionately did not want the Church to hide from or refuse to face the sufferings of the real world around us and the not seeing of God in the face of this suffering. Nor did he want us to hide from the cost of discipleship in which we as Christians are called to make ourselves vulnerable for the Gospel’s sake. It is not good enough for the Church or any of us as Christians to play it safe. It is not good enough, he said from this pulpit in his Installation sermon, for the Church simply to regurgitate theological clichés and refuse to engage intellectually with intelligent people who simply do not find the witness of the Church credible.

    http://interfaithrefugeeinitiative.org/ We are leaders from Britain’s major faiths: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Zoroastrian. All our faiths compel us to affirm the dignity of all human beings and to offer help to anyone in need. As people of faith, we call on your Government urgently to revise its policy towards refugees. The best of this country is represented by the generosity, kindness, solidarity and decency that Britain has at many times shown those fleeing persecution, even at times of far greater deprivation and difficulty than the present day. We rejoice in the mosaic of different faiths and British communities that we now represent. We are proud that in May 2016, in a survey by Amnesty International, 83% of Britons said they would welcome refugees into their neighbourhoods and households. In the face of the unfolding human catastrophe, there are immediate and viable steps that the Government can take to offer sanctuary to more refugees. We call on you to create safe, legal routes of travel, for example by adopting fair and humane family reunion policies for refugees. Under the present immigration rules, a British doctor of Syrian origin could not bring her parents from a refugee camp in Lebanon – even though they were refugees and she could support and house them. A Syrian child who arrived alone in the UK could not bring his parents from a refugee camp in Jordan – even if the child were recognised a refugee and even though his parents were themselves refugees. Families in these situations can currently be reunited only by resorting to desperately unsafe irregular journeys, sometimes ending in avoidable tragedies.
