The sound board was re-engineered, as the original ribs tapered so soon that the bass bridges pushed through. The strings were the wrong weight, and were re-scaled using computer technology. Six more wound-strings were added, and the weights of the steel strings were changed. A 14-inch Duo-Art pump, a fan-expression system, and an expression-valve-size Duo-Art stack with a soft-pedal compensation lift were all built for it. The Marquetry on the side of the piano was inspired by the pictures on the Arto-Roll boxes. The fallboard was inspired by a picture on the Rhythmodic roll box. A new bench was built, modeled after the bench originally available, but veneered to go with the rest of the piano.     I+- THE NATURE OF EVIL IN THE TRAGEDIES OF JAMES SHIRLEY Forrest Edward Black, Jr, A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY June 1975 BOWLING GREEN Sffift UNIVERSITY LIBRARY la ABSTRACT A close reading of James Shirley's five tragedies (The Maid's Revenge, Love's Cruelty, The Traitor, The Politician, and The Cardinal) reveals overriding concern with causes and effects of worldly evil. In all instances an. agent of evil infects both fellow conspirators and arch-enemies, causing great chaos before he and those he has infected are finally eliminated. The agent is always portrayed as Satanic, as Shirley demonstrates through imagery and diction. Yet his motives are always worldly, associating him with Machiavellianism. Evil is spread into the world through the villain and his accomplice, both of whom always meet death eventu­ ally, suggesting that evil has tragic effects on persons other than those whom it is intended to destroy. The last three tragedies show evil's advance from the private into the public sector; whereas in the first two plays love occasioned difficulties, in these chaos is caused through political ambition. This suggests Shirley believes political ambition causes greater problems because it affects more people. In all cases a character close to the evil tries to combat it with evil means and dies in his efforts, suggesting that Machiavellianism even as a means in a good cause is unacceptable. Finally, Shirley shows man is responsible for his own actions by never allowing a character legitimately to blame fate for his falling into evil.

Fink, Co-Chair Professor Raymond L. Knapp, Co-Chair This dissertation investigates musical expressions of temporal alterities in works created by popular music artists, identifying their aesthetic responses as their bodies become ill, disabled, and they become more aware of mortality. I propose a critical, hermeneutic, and theoretical method drawn from Edward Said’s appropriation of Adorno’s expression “late style” that I have designated ill style, a form of creativity within a temporality of illness. Late style is discernable in works produced, paradigmatically, at the end of one’s career in “old age,” but late style may also be understood as an influence on artistic output at any stage of life if the subject is experiencing untimeliness and a disruption in access to the communal understanding of futurity and time, a possible consequence of factors other than age. I contend that late style, accelerated by illness, disrupts Western cultural attempts at ignoring precarious and finite nature of existence; the resulting expressions of lateness ask audiences to do the same. I offer a way in which to think more critically about what scholars consider late style, how it functions in popular ii music studies and society, and how it intersects with the fields of disability, gender, queer, and critical race studies, and the social sciences.
