The Guyana Manufacturers’ Association (in conjunctions with the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce) has also requested assistance in developing sector profiles as a policy tool to identify strengths, weaknesses and needed policy changes to help grow various sectors. The purpose of this report is to support the development of those profiles, by providing an initial overview of one of the sectors. This report is not intended as a definitive assessment of the tourism sector. Instead its purpose is to provide an initial overview through a review of existing reports and through preliminary discussions with those involved in the sector. Due to the timing of the exercise at the end of the GEO project, there was unfortunately not sufficient time to complete the work in developing the two profiles, one for potential investors and one for policy makers. Corregido 09-XII-2004. Aceptado 17-V-2005. Abstract: Embrionary and larval development of Lytechinus variegatus (Echinoidea: Toxopneustidae) in laboratory conditions at Isla de Margarita-Venezuela. The sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus is a promissory species for aquaculture activities in tropical countries. In Venezuela, this species has some economical impor- tance but their embryonic and larval development had not been studied. We collected specimens from seagrass beds in Margarita Island (Venezuela) and kept them in the laboratory, where they spawned naturally. With filtered sea water (temperature 28ºC, salinity 37 psu) and moderate aeration, the eggs and sperm were mixed (relation 1:100) and reached a 90% fertilization rate. The fertilization envelope was observed after two minutes, the first cellular division after 45 minutes and the prism larval stage after 13 hours. The echinopluteus larval stage was reached after 17 hours and metamorphosis after 18 days of planktonic life, when the larvae start their benthic phase. Rev. Biol. Trop. 53(Suppl. 3): 313-318. Sewlal The University of the West Indies1 Three species of social wasps are found in the whether the wasps came from just one or Bahamas (Elliott, 1985; Elliott & Elliott, 1996; several colonies. Richards, 1978), all with similar ranges. Polistes bahamensis, P. major and Mischocyttarus mexicanus are known from all sizeable islands except Mayaguana and Great Inagua, as well as in at least the southern part of Florida. The latter two are likewise found in Cuba. P. bahamensis (Figure 1)—formerly treated as subspecies of P. exclamans (Snelling, 1983)—is tentatively recorded from Mayaguana on the basis of apparently reliable museum specimens (Elliott & Elliott, 1996), although these authors failed to find it in either Mayaguana or Great Inagua (Figure 2). Our purpose here is to record and comment on its presence on Great Inagua. On 1 January 2011 we found P. bahamensis foragers flying along the sides of a road in the interior of Inagua. For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Mangroves and coral reefs: David Stoddart and the Cambridge physiographic tradition Abstract Mangroves are particularly extensive on sheltered, macrotidal, muddy tropical coastlines, but also occur in association with coral reefs. Reefs attenuate wave energy, in some locations enabling the accretion of fine calcareous sediments which in turn favour establishment of seagrasses and mangroves. Knowledge of the distribution and ecology of both reefs and mangroves increased in the first half of the 20th century. J Alfred Steers participated in the Great Barrier Reef Expedition in 1928, and developed an interest in the geomorphological processes by which islands had formed in this setting. It became clear that many mangrove forests showed a zonation of species and some researchers inferred successional changes, even implying that reefs might transition through a mangrove stage, ultimately forming land. Valentine Chapman studied the ecology of mangroves, and Steers and Chapman described West Indian mangrove islands in the 1940s during the University of Cambridge expedition to Jamaica. These studies provided the background for David Stoddart's participation in the Cambridge Expedition to British Honduras and his PhD examination of three Caribbean atolls. -

Ihjring this trip it was possible to inspect in detail the methods of fishing, to observe the a-onraisal and sale of pearls in Porlamar, and to obtain an understanding of the ver:-' efficient system of government management of the fishery by the Ministerio de Agricul- tura y Crfa. -

Boadas RESUMEN: En el siglo XX se produjeron grandes transformaciones en el espacio geográfico margariteño. En este trabajo, previo a un análisis posterior, se señalan factores y agentes de acontecimientos que han concurrido y favorecido tales transformaciones. Entre otros se anotan movimientos demográficos de entrada y salida de población, dotación de infraestructuras y medios para transporte, comercio y servicios, y valorización de la isla como destino turístico y recreacional. Estos acontecimientos y las transformaciones generadas ocurrieron mayoritariamente en la segunda mitad del siglo, y se tradujeron en cambios en la utilización del territorio, que son evidentes en las expansiones urbanas, la aparición de nuevos espacios urbanizados y la conformación de zonas de aprovechamiento turístico y comercial. -

CASAS B. 2, Joselys MORENO V. 3 Y Franklin YORIS V. 4 ABSTRACf: TECTONIC AND SED¡MENTARY ANALYS¡S OF THE PAMPATAR FORMATlON (MIDDLE EOCENE), MAR- GARITA ¡SLAND, VENEZUELA. The Pampatar Fonnation (Eocene) of Margarita Island, Venezuela, consists mainly of inter- bedded sandstones and shales, with some conglomerates. These sediments are interpreted as turbidites deposited in submarine canyons and fans. The conglomerates represent canyon and inner-fan-channel deposits. The rest of the succession represents the entire range of fan environments, from inner to outer fan. Triangular diagrams of sandstone composition (100 samples) elucidate the tectonic setting. Most samples plot in the "recycled orogenic" field of the Q-F-L triangle, while the Qm-F-Lt diagram shows a wider dispersion, including "transitional recycled", "rnixed zone", and "magmatic are". This association is interpreted in tenns of uplift and erosion of a subduction-accretion complex, which supplied most of the sediments to the Pampatar Fonnation (recycled orogen component), with an additional, minor contributions from a dissected and transitional magmatic are, KEy WORDS:Margarita Island, Pampatar Fonnation, Eocene, Turbidites, Sedimentary petrography, Triangular diagrams. Habitat Mapping and Coral Reef Assessments for Hogsty Reef, Little Inagua, and Great Inagua, Bahamas

Renaud, Executive Director http://www.livingoceansfoundation.org All research was performed under a permit obtained from the Bahamas National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) (ref #18/27, 8 December, 2011). No animals were killed or injured during the execution of the project, and no injured or dead marine mammals or turtles were observed. No oil spills occurred from the M/Y Golden Shadow or any of the support vessels, and oil slicks were not observed. The information in this Report summarizes the outcomes of the research conducted during the August, 2011 research mission to Hogsty Reef, Great Inagua and Little Inagua. Information presented in the report includes general methods, the activities conducted during the mission, general trends and observations, analyzed data and recommendations. A single habitat map and bathymetric map developed by NCRI and prepared by Amanda Williams are included for each of the three areas. The full resolution satellite imagery, habitat maps, bathymetric maps and additional data layers are available in a separate GIS database and a hard copy atlas (under production at the date of this report). The effect of some physical factors as exposure to wave action is correlated with the composition of the most conspicuous communities. The applicability of Stephenson's general scheme of zonation is discussed. From the results of this analysis an attempt is made to characterize and delimit the biogeographical province of the West Indies. At the end, a summary of the most common forms of marine plants and invertebrates of the area is given. INTRODUCTION Margarita is the largest of the islands in the Caribbean Sea off the north coast of Venezuela that are actually a part of the east-west trending Caribbean or Coast Range. It lies 30 kilometers north of the mainland in 11ON lat. and 64 oW long. It is composed of two mountain peaks joined together by two sand spits, between which is a large lagoon, Laguna de Restinga, open to the sea. The mountains average 800 meters high. The area to the east of Laguna Restinga, which al- most separates the two parts of the island, is nearly twice as large as the western part, which is locally called Macanao. The total area of Margarita is 1,150 square kilometers, its greatest length being 75 kilometers (Fig. 1). Southward, between Margarita and the mainland, there are two small islands, Cache and Cubagua. -

Work has contin- ued at the Primeval Forest with the final Phase in pro- gress for this jewel of a park. In Andros our park war- dens in partnership with students from the University of Maryland have worked in the Blue Hole National Park to create firewalls and build benches and tables for visitors. The BNT has recently completed a conceptual plan for the Abaco National Park and will be conducting com- munity consultation to introduce the plan and receive feedback on our proposed infrastructure at this very im- portant park.
