FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Teri Wade, 212-595-4047 [email protected] Central City Chorus Presents “Soli Deo Gloria,” the Mass in B minor by J. S. Bach New York, NY (October 26, 2015) - Central City Chorus, directed by Phillip Cheah, opens its 35th season with “Soli Deo Gloria,” a performance of the monumental Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will be held at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on West 87th Street between Broadway and West End Avenue in Manhattan on Saturday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m. Joining the Chorus as musical guests are sopranos Sarah Brailey and Kathleen Cantrell, mezzo-soprano Catherine Hedberg, tenor Chris Carter, and bass Dan Moore, with the internationally acclaimed REBEL Baroque Ensemble. In celebration of the Chorus' 35th anniversary, the theme for the season is “journeys”—looking at how far the Chorus has come and celebrating its future. The Mass in B minor was one of Bach's final works and served as a summation not only of Bach's compositional output but also of the Baroque period as well. Bach’s singular synthesis of music and theology yields a work of unparalleled wonder and beauty. The Chorus' foundational repertoire was built upon the works of Bach, Purcell, Mozart, and other classical masters, so the Mass plays a significant role for the Chorus in recalling its performance history and tradition. Tickets for “Soli Deo Gloria” are $30 ($25 student/seniors) at the door, $25 in advance. Currently in residence at the historic St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church in Manhattan, the Chorus performs music of all periods, from a cappella compositions to works for chorus and orchestra, from countries around the world. The Chorus’ repertoire includes performances of the Brahms German Requiem, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, J. S. Bach’s Magnificat and Christmas Oratorio, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, and the rarely performed Requiem by Frederick Delius. Phillip Cheah is the music director of the Central City Chorus and Guildsingers, a member of the professional choir at the Church of St. Luke in the Fields, and a staff accompanist at The Brearley School. Hailed by the New York Times for the “warm tone and carefully calibrated blend” elicited from his choirs, he has conducted New Music New York, Cerddorion, Amuse, the Amato Opera, and C4 Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, of which he was a founding member. He holds both B.S. and M.M. degrees from Indiana University, where he studied piano, conducting, and opera coaching. ### .
