Although there has been no organized Albanian research in Hungary, the chapters in this book clearly demonstrate that researchers well versed in the various historical periods have engaged in a joint investigation of the Albanian–Hungarian past. The studies reveal new research findings, many of which will cause a sensation in the world of Albanian studies. There Has Been No Bulgarian Tradition of Any Long-Standing Resistance to the Communist Regime
There has been no Bulgarian tradition of any long-standing resistance to the communist regime. There was neither any political opposition, nor any other kind of an influential dissident movement. Bulgaria never went through the purgatory of the Hungarian uprising of 1956, or the “Prague spring” of 1968. It is indeed difficult to find any counter arguments whatsoever against the cliché that Bul- garia was the closest satellite of the Soviet Union. The fundamental contradictions within the Union of Democratic Forces (SDS) coalition were present from the very first day of its inception. There were Marxists who were longing for “socialism with a human face”, intellectuals with liberal ideas, social democrats and Christian democrats, conservatives and radical demo- crats, monarchists and republicans. The members of the center-right coalition did not delude themselves about their differences; they rather shared the clear un- derstanding that only a painful compromise could stand some chances against the Goliath of the totalitarian Bulgarian Communist Party (BKP). It was this unani- mous opposition to the communist regime and its legacy that made the coalition possible. But only for a limited period of time. The United Democratic Forces (ODS) government under Prime Minister Ivan Kostov (1997-2001) completed the reformist agenda of anti-communism. At the end of the ODS term of office, Bulgaria was a country with a functioning market economy, stable democracy, and a clearly outlined foreign policy course towards the country’s accession to the European Union and NATO, which was accepted by all significant political formations, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) included. -

Chapter 5 Migrating in the Medieval East Roman World, ca. 600–1204 Yannis Stouraitis The movement of groups in the Byzantine world can be distinguished between two basic types: first, movement from outside-in the empire; second, move- ment within the – at any time – current boundaries of the Constantinopolitan emperor’s political authority. This distinction is important insofar as the first type of movement – usually in form of invasion or penetration of foreign peo- ples in imperial lands – was mainly responsible for the extensive rearrange- ment of its geopolitical boundaries within which the second type took place. The disintegration of the empire’s western parts due to the migration of the Germanic peoples in the 5th century was the event that set in motion the con- figuration of the medieval image of the East Roman Empire by establishing the perception in the eastern parts of the Mediterranean that there could be only one Roman community in the world, that within the boundaries of authority of the Roman emperor of Constantinople.1 From that time on, the epicentre of the Roman world shifted toward the East. The geopolitical sphere of the imperial state of Constantinople included the broader areas that were roughly circumscribed by the Italian peninsula in the west, the regions of Mesopotamia and the Caucasus in the east, the North- African shores in the south, and the Danube in the north.2 The Slavic settle- ments in the Balkans and the conquest of the eastern provinces by the Muslims between the late-6th and the late-7th century were the two major develop- ments that caused a further contraction of east Roman political boundaries, thus creating a discrepancy between the latter and the boundaries of the Christian commonwealth that had been established in the east in the course of late antiquity.3 This new geopolitical status quo created new conditions regarding the movement of people and groups within the Empire. -

Dear Parishioners, As we prepare once again to enter Holy Week and celebrate Pascha, let us walk firmly in the light of the anticipated Resurrection. Let these days of prayer, worship and fasting serve as an opportunity for us to prepare ourselves to pass from darkness to light, from death to life. Holy Week is one of the most solemn seasons of Orthodox Christianity. While our Orthodox worship services unfold the passion of Christ, it likewise gives us an opportunity to gather our entire family in an atmosphere of chanting and repentance. Holy Week is a time to gather with our families at the morning and evening church services to praise God with common prayer and hymns and feel the power and love of Jesus Christ. Holy Week is a time of repentance. The preparation of Christ's Passion and Resurrection is an important time for the Sacrament of Holy Confession, the Sacrament which restores the resurrected nature of man. After having experienced the Sacrament of Confession, we partake of the Holy Body and Blood of our Resurrected Saviour Jesus Christ. My dear Christians, as we experience Christ’s Passion and Resurrection, let us allow ourselves to be changed by Him. Let us trust in the One who died for our sins, who rose again to give us hope, certainty of life, eternal life and hope for the resurrection. Let us receive Him now so we may be able to know and feel the “Good News” of Pascha….He is Risen!!!! Have a truly blessed and joyous Easter together with your loved ones. -
