In order to reduce mailing costs, the Board of Director’s election ballot will be mailed in the May issue; the Annual Dinner notice will be sent with the July issue and your renewal notice for 1990 will be sent in the September issue. Periodically members have marine publications that they wish to donate to the museum. In January volunteers will compile a list of needed material to fill in the museum’s col­ lection. This list will be published in the next issue and hopefully members will fill in the missing journals. Last May the Bluewater Michigan Chapter sponsored a trip from Detroit to Port Huron. They will sponsor another trip this year on Memorial Day and hope to fill both Bob-Lo boats. Information flyers are available at the museum or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the museum. When finishing this issue of Telescope, the Compugraphic machine decided to type only certain letters. Since the deadline for the printer was only two days away, I decided to finish this issue without waiting for the repairman. I apologize for using the typewriter for photo captains and other places, but felt that it was more important to send Telescope to the printer on time. In the next issue, we’ll provide information on the few ships that had to be omitted from the news due to problems with the machine. MEETING NOTICES • On Friday, January 19th at 8:00 p.m., representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard in Detroit will present a program on the history of the Coast Guard as well as present day operations. Future entertainment meetings are scheduled for Fridays, March 16th and May 18th. A brand new year, a brand new slate, and a brand new outlook. It is going to be difficult to keep up with the pace set in 1977, but the continued success of the Institute demands that we not just meet, but surpass last year. At the close of the year our member­ ship had grown to approaching 1,50C. pretty good for an organization that had 97 members in 1959...but this year we’ll shoot for 1,600. It’ll take a lot of work, and you’ll have to help, but you always have, so we should make it. Telescope production last year produced a total of 244 pages, and in addition to that we produced the FITZGERALD book with 60 pages. For the uninitiated, this means your Editor typed, then Varityped 608 pages. This much production takes a lot of time, but we are going to do something about it, and we’ll have an announcement to make perhaps as early as the next issue. Not only will what we have planned result in far less work to getting Telescope out, but it will produce a far better product. Yes, 1977 was a good year...but 1978 looks better. MEETING NOTICES Regular membership meetings are scheduled for January 27, March 31, and May 19 (early to avoid Memorial Day weekend). All meetings will be at the Dossin Museum at 8:00 PM.

The long-distance passenger services were coming to an end and the company was about to expand through a series of land-based acquisitions to become a nationwide transport operator, rather than the Eastern Canadian shipping company that it had been post-war. The company would have to deal with continued competition to Newfoundland and labour problems in St John's, but by doing so it would put itself in a position to be able to order two large and modern mechanized ships for what would come to be its main route between Montreal and St John's. Older ships would be sold off, others chartered and a new joint venture would be opened to serve Goose Bay and the Arctic. And as the Quebec North Shore highway system developed, the Rivière-du-Loup and Saguenay cross-river ferry operations would be renewed. As ferries replaced passenger ships and other cargo operators came onto the scene, the company would also lose some of its long-standing subsidized services. But at the same time, the scene would be set for entering the overseas trades. Peak Traffic Years In terms of ship movements, the years 1959 and 1960 were the busiest Clarke would ever see, with the company operating no fewer than 500 scheduled sailings in 1960. It also completed innumerable bulk voyages using a large number of chartered vessels.

It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability. Marine Investigation Report Grounding Bulk Carrier Canadian Leader Off Cap à la Roche, Upstream of Deschaillons-sur-Saint-Laurent, Quebec 26 September 2005 Report Number M05L0203 Synopsis On 24 September 2005, the Canadian Leader departed Pointe-Noire, Quebec, fully loaded with iron ore pellets and bound for Hamilton, Ontario. At 0115 eastern daylight time on September 26, upstream of Deschaillons-sur-Saint-Laurent, Quebec, the vessel sustained a blackout. With the helm no longer responsive, the vessel took a sheer to starboard and ran aground near buoy D38. Water ingress was observed in the forepeak and the No. 1 starboard ballast tank. Three hours later, on a rising tide, two unsuccessful attempts to refloat were made. Later that morning, the crew realized that the cargo hold was taking in water and, once the vessel’s management company was apprised of the situation, a salvage tug and equipment were requested. Upon arrival, portable pumps were rigged and de-watering commenced. At approximately 0525 on September 28, the third attempt to refloat was successful. The vessel then proceeded to the Port of Québec, where it was partially unloaded and underwent temporary repairs. Afterward, the vessel resumed its voyage toward the Great Lakes. Albin Jackman At the June meeting of the Board of Directors, a slate of nominees for officers was submitted by a nominating committee. The slate consisted of the incumbent officers, and the President after asking for additional nom­ inations from the floor and hearing none asked that nominations be closed. It was so moved, and further that the Secretary be instructed to record a unanimous vote for the slate. This motion carried and all officers remain to serve the 1970-71 term of office.     Canadian Ships by Call Sign for Radiotelegraph There are errors in this list simply because it is impossible to make a list like this error free. If you note an error please contact me so that I can correct the error. I have no idea why one cannot make a list like this error free. This is a list of the two, three and four letter call signs Canada assigned to ships during the years radiotelegraph was in use. This is simply the list of those I have found and those I had to work with over the years. I have XJAG listed after radiotelegraph just to show that Canada is now assigning ship calls from those blocks of call signs. I have also listed the Orca, Kingston and CPF naval ships simply because I have them. They were created after radiotelegraph. Some of the Canadian naval ships were called Canadian but were actually commissioned as Royal Navy ships. I have included ships that were not registered in Canada but had Canadian crews. There are a few Canadian ships that I have been unable to identify. In other words this is a list of the ships I have found that were assigned these call signs over the years. This list is in alphabetical order. The two and three letter call signs were the first in use from 1904 until 1923. The International Telecommunication Union had assigned sufficient blocks of these call signs to Canada over the years so that Canada could have assigned a four character call sign to every vessel of every size registered in Canada.

Items are in good condition unless otherwise stated. Bids accepted by e-mail and letter mail, not by telephone. For identical bids, first one received takes priority. This is a low-tech auction, as some members of the society do not have e-mail access. We are unable to notify bidders about competing bids or to advise on expected final prices. Reserve prices indicate minimum acceptable bids. Closing date for bids is Monday, May 1, at 11:59 p.m. Successful bidders will be notified by e-mail before May 15. While we endeavour for good descriptions, TMHS and the auctioneer cannot be held liable for errors and omissions. With any discovered discrepancy, we may withdraw the item. Flat items up to 500 grams go by letter mail (some exceptions). Over 500 grams (1 lb. 2 oz.), rates are calculated on the weight and dimensions of the package and distance to destination.
