  • “Rockin' All Over the World”: Organisational
Int. J. Management Concepts and Philosophy, Vol. 9, No. 1, 2015 1 “Rockin’ All Over The World”: organisational improvisation lessons from the music-based practitioner Stephen A. Leybourne* Metropolitan College, Boston University, Boston, MA 02215, USA Email: [email protected] *Corresponding author Peter Cook Human Dynamics, London, UK Email: [email protected] Abstract: This paper explores the relationships and interactions between organisational improvisational activity and differing modes of improvisational expertise utilised by musicians from a range of musical genres. The evolving literature on organisational improvisation has been considered, together with parallel or reinforcing lessons drawn from the orchestral, jazz, and rock musical genres. It is evident that when we consider leadership and management, that more flexible and less rigid structures are being considered in a world of networked organisational structures. Successful managers and leaders draw on improvisational decisions and interventions that are grounded in experience and prior knowledge. Indeed, a degree of creative or constructive deviance is shown to be useful in achieving in the progressive modern organisation. Improvisational organisations have to be specially competent in the management of the unknown and unknowable rather than becoming blocked by such circumstances, and this paper draws out a number of lessons from a range of musical and organisational sources can assist the management practitioner. Keywords: organisational improvisation; creativity; improvisation; music. Reference to this paper should be made as follows: Leybourne, S.A. and Cook, P. • Stanley Donen, ‘Master of the Musical’ Who Directed ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ Dies at 94
LOG IN Stanley Donen, ‘Master of the Musical’ Who Directed ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ Dies at 94 Stanley Donen in 1958. He directed some of Hollywood’s most beloved musicals, including “On the Town” (1949). Ronald Grant Archive, via Alamy By Richard Severo Feb. 23, 2019 Stanley Donen, who directed Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling, Gene Kelly singing in the rain and a host of other sparkling moments from some of Hollywood’s greatest musicals, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 94. His son, Mark Donen, confirmed the death. Stanley Donen brought a certain charm and elegance to the silver screen in the late 1940s through the 1950s, at a time when Hollywood was soaked in glamour and the big studio movies were polished to a sheen. “For a time, Donen epitomized Hollywood style,” Tad Friend wrote in The New Yorker in 2003. Mr. Donen, he wrote, “made the world of champagne fountains and pillbox hats look enchanting, which is much harder than it sounds.” Mr. Donen worked with some of the most illustrious figures of his era: from Astaire and Kelly to Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. He also worked with Leonard Bernstein, the lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and the writing team of Comden and Green, not to mention Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor. Mr. Donen’s filmography is studded with some of Hollywood’s most loved and admired musicals. “Royal Wedding” (1951), in which Astaire defied gravity, and “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952), in which Kelly defied the weather, were just two of his crowd-pleasers.

  • 5. Tales of the Unexpected – Programme Notes
TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED UK/1979-1988/25mins/12 An aristocratic lady trapping her head in an expensive slab of Henry Moore-like sculpture. A stray cat that may be the reincarnation of Franz Liszt. A beggar who carries a prized piece of tattooed art etched into his back. A vengeful wife taking gleeful control of her domineering husband's living brain. Anglia Television was the home of hit prime time game show 'Sale of the Century' and teatime budget casino 'Gambit', but for nine years from 1979 the unassuming regional ITV franchise went weird and wonderful. Suddenly, things got a whole lot more bizarre than Nicholas Parsons... The aforementioned oddness and more was sprung from the fervid imagination of author Roald Dahl. ITV's local regions were not averse to telefantasy, after 1976's 'Beasts' and Brian Clemens' Saturday night shocker 'Thriller' on ATV, Thames brought us 'Shadows of Fear' for adults and 'Shadows' for juvenile viewers; and HTV terrified nippers and parents alike with the Avebury-focused six-parter 'Children of the Stones'. So the commercial broadcaster was well-versed in small screen nightmares by the time the decision was taken to film 'Tales of the Unexpected' in and around Norwich. "I ought to warn you, if you haven't read any of my stories, that you may be a little disturbed by some of the things that happen in them". With these words - delivered with enormous gravity by a gaunt figure, with thinning hair, a sly sense of black humour, and plenty of surprises up his sleeves - Roald Dahl introduced himself to millions of new fans and increased his reputation as a master of the macabre several times over.

We acknowledge the brutal history of this stolen land and the displacement and dispossession of its Indigenous people. We also acknowledge that after there were stolen lands, there were stolen people. We honor the generations of displaced and enslaved people that built, and continue to build, the country that we occupy today. We gathered together in virtual space to watch this performance. • Habeas Corpus
Plays and Pinot: Habeas Corpus Synopsis The aging Dr. Arthur Wicksteed pursues his nubile patient, Felicity Rumpers. Wicksteed's wife Muriel lusts after the charming head of the BMA, Sir Percy Shorter. Shorter as well as being Wicksteed's old rival, turns out to be Felicity's father - the result of an under-the-table liaison during an air-raid with Lady Rumpers, her mother. Meanwhile, Wicksteed's spinster-sister Connie, ashamed of her flat- chestedness, has schemes of her own. Like some saucy Magill seaside postcard as retouched by Magritte, or an end-of-the-pier romp reorganised by Orton, the piece shows how a collection of stock types from Hove find themselves propelled into the permissive society with the arrival of a false-breast fitter from Leatherhead. Identities are mistaken, the wrong knockers admiringly fondled, and libidos burst out of enforced hibernation. About the Playwright Alan Bennett, (born May 9, 1934, Leeds, Yorkshire, England), is a British playwright who was best known for The Madness of George III (1991) and The History Boys (2004). His work fearlessly scrutinized the British class system, propriety, and England’s north-south cultural divide with results that were simultaneously chilling and hilarious. Bennett attended Leeds Modern School and gained a scholarship to Exeter College, Oxford, where he received an undergraduate degree in history in 1957. His fledgling career as a junior lecturer in history at Magdalen College, Oxford, was cut short after he enjoyed enormous success with the comedy revue Beyond the Fringe in 1960. He coauthored and starred in the show with Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller, and Dudley Moore, and the foursome played to packed houses in Edinburgh, London, and New York City.
