Buk-gu is a historical area where the spirit of the old lives on. Originally known as ‘Jwai- myeon,’ the area BUK was part of Dongpyeong-myeon, Dongnae- gun during the Unified Period. In 1914, GU the name was changed to Gupo-myeon, Dongnae-gun and in 1963, the jurisdiction of the area was given over to Busan City. By 1978, the area was developed into ‘Buk-gu.’ Gangseo-gu (once a part of Buk-gu) became its own district in 1989 as did Sasang-gu, on March 1, 1995. Neighbored by Busan’s lifeline Nakdong and guardian mountain Mt. Geumjeong, Buk-gu is the main transportation hub of western Busan. Despite the area’s rapid development, city officials have put forth their utmost effort to maintain the delicate balance between nature and the needs of the populace. Buk-gu has a population of 310,000 people (8.6% of that of Busan City) and a total area of 39.44km2 (5.1% of that of Busan City). It consists of 13 administrative districts.

It was a branch fortress of the Jukdo Japanese Fortress in Gimhae and was built in 1953 by Japanese commander Kobayakawa in order to keep contact between Gimhae and .
