ABOUT FRANK LOESSER He was born on June 29 in 1910 in New York City. Frank Loesser wanted to write songs and nothing could stop him. Bypassing formal musical training, he started improvising on the piano at the age of six and then composing on a harmonica, taking a third prize in a harmonica contest. Extraordinarily, Loesser was a serious musician and a Bach scholar and had, as well, an overwhelming fund of knowledge of art, literature, philosophy and the mortise-and-tenon construction of 16th century cabinetry. He also expressed in both his work and his life the essence of the American musical theater. Because his attitude towards life was so contemporary, realistic and energetic, he did not permit nostalgia to enter into his vocabulary and today, his creative genius and relevance are as vital as ever. And such energy! He rocked Broadway, Hollywood and the rest of the world with his music-from the Runyonesque big-city exuberance of "Guys & Dolls" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" to the romantic Lyricism of "The Most Happy Fella" and "Greenwillow" and the gay vitality of "Where's Charley?" and "Hans Christian Andersen". All of this activity was apart from a personal life centered around his family. In 1959, he married soprano Jo Sullivan, who starred in many Broadway musicals. He was the proud father of four children. Hannah and Emily with his last wife, Jo, and Susan and John from his earlier marriage to the former Lynn Garland. Although Frank Loesser died in July of 1969, he left us the fruits of an undying spirit and vitality caught in his music and lyrics for the over fifteen hundred songs that he wrote. He was and is a man for our times. MUSICAL NUMBERS ACT I "Guys & Dolls" Company "The Boys in the Backroom" Lisa "Murder, He Says." DID YOU KNOW? • that "Baby, It's Cold Outside" from the movie, "Neptune's Daughter" won an Academy Award for best motion-picture song of the year? • that "How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" won Loesser a Pulitzer Prize? • that Loesser handcrafted a corner (just a corner) of a Regency desk, inlaid and perfectly finished and sent it to John Steinbeck with a note saying, "From the desk of Frank Loesser"? • that the first song he ever wrote both words and music for was "Praise The Lord and Pass the Ammunition"? • that "Where's Charley?" was Loesser's first Broadway musical? • that "Guys & Dolls" won the New York Critics Circle Award and Tony Award ran 1200 performances? RAY TONEY We welcome Ray to his first directing task with West Valley Light Opera. A familiar figure on our stage, Association subscribers will remember his wonderful portrayals of Jerry Cohan in "George M" and Pooch in "Good News". Ray began his theatrical career as an MC with Golden State Theaters in San Francisco and then traveled extensively as a dancer and comedy performer. He has directed TV commercials and staged and choreographed several musical revues in the Orient as well as in the US. He choreographed "Finian's Rainbow" and WVLO's "Kiss Me, Kate" and with wife, Barbara, choreographed WVLO's "Pal Joey" and Saratoga Drama Goup's "70, Girls, 70". The recipient of a CAT award and several Inner City Circle awards, he gave memorable performances in local productions of "Mr. Roberts", "Marathon 33", "Sugar", and "Finian's Rainbow". His latest achievement, "Delta Centauri", an original musical romantic comedy, which he co-authored with Marge Hand, will be presented by Cupertino Actors Studio Theater in July in Cupertino. Ray has also composed a number of other songs which may just be hits someday. We wish him the best of luck in all his endeavors and hope he will join us soon again in any capacity. SUSAN LOUISEAU Sue makes her debut with West Valley Light Opera as Music Director, but is no stranger to our stage or orchestra pit. She has played clarinet for "Brigadoon", "Good News", "Flower Drum Song", and "The Student Prince" and performed on our stage in "Wonderful Town". A clarinet major from Jordan College of Music in Indianapolis, she played professionally in the Midwest for 10 years. She was married to a trumpet player for 12 years who did not want her to perform so after her divorce, she climbed out of the pit to appear in production of "Most Happy Fella", "Company" and "Damn Yankees". She moved to California in 1979 and became involved in community theater immediately. Sue's most recent appearances were in "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Wizard of Oz", One of her two beautiful daughters plans to make her a grandmother sometime during the run of this show.
