POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH

Positive Mental Health refers to the presence of positive emotions and good functioning in both individual and social environment. It is a state of physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Physical and mental health are closely associated and it is proved beyond doubt that depression leads to heart and chronic diseases. Mental disorders also affect persons health and behavior like eating sensibly ,regular exercise ,adequate sleep, alcohol and tobacco use adhering to medical therapies thus increasing the risk of physical illness etc.

IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL HEALTH

1. Increases productivity of individual 2. Emotional Strength in low life condition 3. Ability to handle stress 4. Easy adaptation to changes

It will be incomplete to talk about positive mental health without making a mention of resilience. Build ing resilience is the key towards tackling mental health problems. Resilience is often discussed as that aspect of mental health and coping which is permanent to the ability to spring back during adverse circumstances. The mention of positive health necessarily recounts on the ability to withstand and cope with stress adaptively. Resilience refers to overall physical and psychological health, and has been described as the ability to “bounce back from adversity”. Contents: Page no:

BY-SHARIN CHOUDHURY 5TH SEMESTER Mahatma Gandhi once said "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and sliver. The investment on healthcare sector services by the Indian government has been commendable but to the contrary when millions of people are suffering from mental health issues, the meagre funds allocated also gets reduced. The National Mental Health Programme saw a reduced allocation from Rs 50 crore the previous year to Rs 40 crore for 2019-20 (sources - thequint). Mental health itself is an epidemic which has gripped millions of people. For its proper diagnosis, funds allocated should be increased . Unlike the Covid-19 virus where physiological symptoms can be monitored and the patients can be cured, the mental health malfunctioning is more psychological in nature and needs in-depth analysis, study, diagnosis, and then resort to treatment.

The Mental Healthcare Act (MHCA) passed by the government in 2017 was seen as a welcome step in the direction of catering to the millions of Indians needing assistance. It looks to protect, promote, fulfil the rights of persons with mental illness (PMI) and puts the onus on the state to provide affordable mental healthcare to its citizens.

. (4) However, there has been little attempt to implement these progressive policies. A review article ‘Cost estimation for the implementation of the Mental Healthcare Act 2017’, published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry, estimated the conservative annual estimated cost on the government to implement MHCA to be Rs 94,073 crore rupees compared to the allocated Rs 40 crore.(sources:thequint). The amount spent is comparable with what Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani makes in just 3 hours, or a day’s expense of a trip abroad by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, or barely the cost of a Rolls Budget documents Royce car. Despite the unused funds set aside in its budget for mental health, the government hasn’t organized any major awareness programs even on World Mental Health Day, even while aggressively celebrating International Yoga Day, spending about 345 million rupees ($4.5 million). (sources: the diplomat).

Mental health correlates positively with a country’s economic growth. With malfunctioning and unproductivity in rise, an individual's mental health directly affects the country's economy.

(5) As of April 1, there were over 1,600 confirmed coronavirus cases in with the death toll standing at 38. Migrant labourers left jobless by the lockdown were walking thousands of kilometres back to their villages, struggling for food, water and shelter along the way.

Health workers, on the other hand, are battling crumbling infrastructure and shortage of protective gear as cases surge. These developments have resulted in many people worrying about the uncertainty and what's next. A 2018 survey conducted by non-profit HelpAge India indicates that 10-20 percent of all senior citizens in India suffer from loneliness, while 6 percent lives alone. India's government started easing the most severe restrictions on daily life in June, but the effects of the lockdown on residents' mental health are still emerging, as the country battles one of the most severe Covid-19 outbreaks in the world.Research conducted by the Suicide Prevention in India Foundation (SPIF) in May found that nearly 65% of 159 mental health professionals surveyed reported an increase in self-harm among their patients. (6) The need of the hour: The government: Even though there has been agreements between USA and India to work on mental health crisis, the opportunity seems more beneficial for the capitalists. Hardly ever any election manifesto revolves or carries the propaganda of addressing the mental health crisis.

Addressing the looming mental health issue is the need of the hour. Instead of turning a blind eye to this acute crisis, and wooing half of the population with beautification projects and schemes that only remain in papers, these allocated funds can ensure that every individual gets proper treatment ,be it the needy ones or the ones not ready to accept that they need help. What we can do?

Mental health is still considered a stigma and derogatory names are used for the ones suffering. We are not helpless. We are educated, all we need to do is, be a little emphathetic and try being inclusive. Instead of pacifying the aggrieved, we should lend our ears to listen. Personal experiences of mental health disorder is more acute than the mere information you perceive from social sites and 'I know it all' individuals.

Family benefits - by improving communication skills and ability to engage , AAT enables positive family interactions and improves the relationship between children and their families. For children, it helps them to learn about relationships with animals and then apply these experiences to forming relationships with other humans. In the case of elderly it is being seen that elders who have interacted with animals are also more likely to engage in long conversations and socialize more often , tactile stimulation by petting animals has also been linked with increased social behaviour as it improves mood and makes the individual feel happy and comfortable.

(15) Covid Heroes

If there is ever been a time that we need heroes, it is now. The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented health and economic challenges, especially for the most vulnerable among us. The good news is that many people from all walks of life are doing their part to help them. Millions of health care workers-physicians, nurses, technicians, other health care pro fessional, and hospital support staff, as well as first responders including emer gency rescue personnel, law enforcement officers, and others who provide essential services and products-around the world have faced the challenge of providing care for patients with COVID-19, while often ill-equipped and poorly prepared, risking their own lives to save the lives of others. They honor us all with their commitment, dedication, and professionalism.

THABANG SELEKE Scientists around the world are racing to develop a coronavirus vaccine. There are more than 150 vaccine candidates in development and dozens of trials underway. All these trials need volunteers willing to step forward and help test whether the vaccine is effective and safe. One of those volunteers is Thabang Seleke from Soweto, South Africa. Thabang is participating in the first African trial of the chAdOxl nCov-19 coronavirus vaccine, which was developed by the Jenner Institute at the University of Oxford.

SIKANDER BIZENJO When COVID-19 spread into Pakistan, Sikander Bizenjo knew where the pan demic would have the biggest impact: on the poorest areas of his country, includ ing places like his home province of Balochistan. More than 70 percent of the pop ulation in this arid, mountainous region in southwestern Pakistan lives in poverty and struggles to gain access to education and health care. He founded a group called the Balochistan Youth Against Corona, which raises funds for monthly food rations for 10,000 households in Balochistan as well of personal protective equipment, marks, face shields and hand sanitizers for frontline health workers.

(18) Monon: Initiative of Assam Government

Effects of the ruthless COVID-19 have been seen world-wide. It has caused damage to thousands of households globally. A pandemic which originated in China affected every corner of the planet within a span of 4 months. Repercussions of the Coronavirus are not just limited to the physical health, but mental health as well.

Assam has been one of the worst hit states in India in the recent times due to the pandemic. With more than 31,000 active cases and a low positivity rate of 3.92%, the state has been facing a very difficult time.

Thus, to address the urgent need to take care of the mental health of its people, especially the ones who tested positive for COVID-19, the Government of Assam recently launched “Monon”, a support program which aims at providing mental and emotional support, counselling and treatment to the citizens of Assam. The team of Monon consists of 220 professionals including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, trained counsellors and psychiatric social workers who make over 10 calls each to COVID-19 patients on a daily basis. Through telephonic communication they initiate assessments of patients’ mental health. The professionals take responsibility to develop suitable treatment and rehabilitation program based on the information gathered of the patients.

What makes Monon so different is the dynamic nature of the program and its team who provide support to the COVID-19 patients in an attempt to detect any symptoms that might present vulnerability to any mental diseases such as depression, anxiety, and etc. so that they are able to provide the required attention and help on time.

Dr. Mythili Hazarika, the leader of the program and an associate professor of Clinical Psychology at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital mentioned to the Indian Express that “This is a unique kind of a programme, where the mental health professionals are calling those who might need help rather than just waiting for them to call us,”

Amidst the increasing cases of mental health issues, ‘Monon’ has become an example and a roadmap nationwide as a step towards encouraging a healthier life.

Their real life story, a behind-the-scenes look at their 2017 world tour, was portrayed through a documentary on Youtube, as well as a movie released worldwide in cinemas, which showed a new kind of sincerity and vulnerability, since viewers discovered the dark side of the spotlight and the pressure and injuries they endure. Books are also commonplace in their art: the Wings album was based on Demian by Hermann Hesse, and the song Magic Shop on Into the Magic Shop by Dr. James R. Doty. Throughout the entire song, we see the cold relationship contrasted with the impending 5th semester change of seasons into spring.

Movies and TV shows have always been considered as a mode for relaxation, playing a vital role as a stress buster for all around the world. There have been times when movies have proved to hold an effective healing aspect, allowing us to disconnect from the daily busy schedule, to relax and have a good time. Watching movies boosts emotional release, have a cathartic effect and also make it easier for people to become more comfortable in expressing their emotions. Movies with their storyline offer us diverse perspectives and help us to make sense of our own lives. If we can say that watching violent movies or series imparts aggressive behaviour in an individual, then we must also consider that watching a movie of different genre as in light mood, inspiring, biographical, can help us broaden and lighten our mindset. Let us try to bring the sense of these reels in our real time and space.

(29) CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC (2009, AMERICA) Directed by: P.J. Hogan Genre: Comedy, Romance Cast: Isla Fisher Hugh Dancy Brandon Krysten Ritter The movie revolves around Rebecca Bloom wood, also called as Becky, lives in New York City with her friend Suze. She is addicted to shopping to the heights that she is drowning in debt. With the wish to work at the city's top fashion magazine and sudden collapse in the income source, Becky accidentally lands a job as an advice columnist for a financial magazine owned by the same magazine. She falls for the editor, Luke, who is also an entrepreneur. Becky's column "The Girl in the Green Scarf" becomes a huge success and she becomes popular. But her secret of debt threatens to ruin her love life and career.

As the name of the movie suggests, we can clearly see the aspects of a psychological problem, that is, addiction, in this case for shopping. The term shopaholic first appeared in print in 1977 and it refers to someone who compulsively shops. In the very first scene of the movie we can see Becky talking to a mannequin who is convincing her to buy the green scarf. Although the scene is very funny but it reflects the complex psychological problem. In one of her dialogue with Luke we can hear her saying, "When I shop, the world gets better. The world is better; and then it's not and I need to do it again." This reflects her anxiousness and obsessive, uncontrollable urge to shop.

Another aspect that can be viewed as important to psychology is importance of management or self-help groups like Shopaholic Anonymous which helps to overcome their addiction of shopping. Since Suze, roommate and friend, forced Becky to join such group and watch self-help videos like "Control Your Urge to Shop" by Garret E. Barton , at first, we can witness her denial of the problem which is a coping mechanism, an important psychological aspects, but it's not favorable in the long run. (30) The film begins with a setting of foster-care for at-risk teens at California, where the film's protagonist, Grace works as a young counselor with her boyfriend Mason. The movie draws attention when an inmate named Marcus is preparing to leave after his 18th birthday and a new arrival 16-year-old Jayden is unwillingly becoming a part of the community. Simultaneously, Grace happens to know about her unwanted pregnancy. It seems that she is not willingly sharing her emotions and fears with her boyfriend, Mason who is very supportive to his girlfriend and loves her very much. Interestingly when Jayden starts confiding in Grace about her abusive father, Grace is slowly able to work through her own troubled past and start a new life with Mason.

In this movie , we can see very critical aspects SHORT TERM 12 (2013, America) of psychology such as how unhealthy past Directed by: Destin Daniel Cretton Genre: or childhood can affect the rest of the life, Drama how counseling and such foster-care centers Cast: Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr. and homes work, how communication is the key to many life problems are few of the aspects highlighted.

We could see how each of the teens were handled, every detail of them was clearly studied and a planned action was carried out with emotional support and medicines. We also hear this clearly in one of Grace's dialogue when she instructs the new co-worker about the work, "Remember you are not their parents, you are not their therapist. You are here to create a safe environment and that's it!" We could also see the several ways of communication like drawing, painting, writing songs, rapping, making cards, storytelling, games which gives us an introduction of the teens present there. And one most important aspect that drew the attention was healthy childhood and adolescence.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a story about three old friends, who reunites after many years for a bachelor party trip. The trip changes their perception about life and many unforgettable experiences and self- realisation.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is basically a movie BoJack Horseman (2014-2020) that shows how a trip or a break turns into an Creator - Raphael Bob-Waksberg opportunity to mend Genres - Tragicomedy, Dark comedy, fences, heal wounds, fall in love with life and surreal humour combat our worst fears. Cast -Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Aaron Paul, Amy Sedaris The story mainly revolves around a middle aged anthropomorphic horse that previously starred in a famous sitcom in the 90s, named BoJack Horseman. It is shown that BoJack suffers from trauma, depression, and is involved in self-destructive and self-loathing behaviors. (32) Movie- Chhichore Release – 6th September 2019 Genre- /comedy Director- Nitesh Tiwari Cast - Sushant Singh Rajput. Shraddha Kapoor. Varun Sharma. Tahir Raj Bhasin. Naveen Polishetty. Tushar Pandey. Prateik Babbar. Saharsh Kumar Shukla.

The movie ‘Chhichore’ is a perfect depiction of the importance of people in our lives. A middle- aged man and his seven friends and his ex-wife showed us real meaning of friendship who were separated with time. A tragic situation unites these friends then they take a trip down the memory lane and reminisce their college days.

Presence of Mind is the first psychological aspect that has been highlighted in the movie. The ability to remain calm and composed and having self-control in a stressful situation is very important aspect of life. We humans have a tendency to panic at times of emergencies. But if our mind is calm then we can listen, observe and can make good decisions without losing focus. We could see how Anni and his friends made sound decisions while facing challenges.

Second aspect is determination. It is very important because it enables us to persist in the face of difficulties. It gives us strength to move ahead until we achieve our goals. Similarly in the movie we can see how Anni and his friends move forward and faced all the challenges to remove the tag of ‘losers’.

At last but not the least the fifth important thing is that it teaches us to maintain relationship and forgiving. It is very important for every individual to have a healthy relationship by forgiving certain things that is not so important than their relationship. At the end of the movie we could see how Maya and Anni regrets for letting their ego overpower their love that eventually turned to separation. Sometimes forgiving and saying sorry to others doesn’t mean that we’re wrong it simply means that we value our relationship more than our ego.

(43) I AM HERE, FOR YOU.

I'll be unknown but I'll be there. I'll provide you support because you did not do it willingly. I will be your strength in the most vulnerable days. I'll be your voice for the crowd. I feel guilty for not being able to help you early, Know that I am here now. Things are difficult. Maintain your composure. Better days are waiting for you, For now you must suffer. God's child, you're no different. Just a mind unnatural. There's every room for learning again and letting go of everything left behind.

Breathe. The world is cruel. Not for you to worry. Rest your heavy head, let it heal. Heal for a better tomorrow A tomorrow not so far, Not so dark, But full of flowers you will plant.

Yours always, Neha ❤ 21.09.20.
