Kelly,† and Annemarie Jutel‡ ABSTRACT In this commentary, written in two bursts—the first completed in April 2020, and the second at the end of July—we explore how media metaphors of COVID-19 constitute the pandemic in Australia and New Zealand. We argue that the media’s rhetorical strategies play an important role not only in describing the illness, but in influencing and shaping individual and collective responses to the pandemic, with significant consequences for mental health and well-being in the context of crisis. We align this commentary with the tenets of the sociology of diagnosis, which argue that even though there are material realities of disease, their social form and conse- quence cannot be separated from the tangible nature of illness and its management. We also lean on Derrida’s approach to metaphor, which underlines how even observable viral entities such as COVID-19 are simultaneously material, abstract, and in flux. We describe the metaphors used by local media to describe the pandemic—including combat, bush fires, earthquakes, and other natural disasters—and we explore how and why these metaphors construct the pandemic locally and farther afield. *School of English, Film, Theatre, Media Studies, and Art History, Te Herenga Waka/Victoria Uni- versity of Wellington, New Zealand. -

Welcoming the Gender Equitable Engagement and Instruction Policy Jenny Cooper QC and Gretta Schumacher * In 2018, women constitute the majority of practising lawyers, and yet represent fewer than 35% of law firm directors, fewer than 24% of partners in law firms, and only 18.7% of QCs. Can the recently launched Gender Equitable Engagement and Instruction Policy address these woeful figures? NZ watchdogs must keep up with media’s changing face COMMENTARY A discussion paper released by the New Zealand Law Commission just before the end of 2011 looked into how well the regulatory framework governing the NZ media was working, and concluded that change was needed. Currently complaints must be made first to the publication or broadcaster concerned. Only if the complainant is dissatisfied with the outcome is there a right of appeal to the self-regulatory Press Council, for print media, or, for radio and television, to the statutory Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA). The commission’s recommendation is for a new single regulator created by statute to which all complaints about ‘news media’ would be directed. Unlike the Press Council or the BSA, the new regulator could intervene without any complaint being laid and—possi- bly—even before a story is published where there are concerns about the methods the journalist used to gather information. And, importantly, online media would be included. But debate about the issues in New Zealand have been rather muted compared to the Australian and British debates. K iaO ra Foundation Grand Finale Concert Pacific Opera Programme September 8, 2011 Jack Mann Auditorium University of Canterbury Christchurch K iaO ra Foundation Grand Finale Concert Pacific Opera Programme September 8, 2011 Jack Mann Auditorium University of Canterbury Christchurch ABOUT KIA ORA FOUNDATION Since 1997, Kia Ora Foundation, a US non-profit organisation set up by Ms. Annette Campbell-White, a New Zealander resident in the United States, has funded scholarships for educational purposes for New Zealand students. The Foundation offers scholarships in musical performance, which are administered by the Te Pokai Tara-Universities New Zealand (TPTUNZ), formerly known as the New Zealand Vice Chancellors’ Committee, (NZVCC). In addition, the Foundation has endowed an undergraduate Scholarship in applied sciences at the University of Otago in Dunedin. The chief scholarship is the Patricia Pratt Scholarship in Musical Performance, which was established in memory of Annette Campbell-White’s mother, who was a talented pianist. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist outstanding New Zealand musical performers – both vocal and instrumental - who have completed an honours degree in musical performance, preferably in New Zealand, to continue their music development at a renowned international music school or conservatory. The scholarship is awarded for classical musical performance including vocal and instrumental performance and conducting. In recent years, the Foundation has begun to explore new directions for provision of financial support for further activities, which could benefit the development of music education in New Zealand. Pacific Opera Programme (POP) was founded by the Board of Directors of the Foundation as a direct result of this initial stimulus. -
