The Alabama Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Tammy B. Clemons, State Regent

Dear Chapter Regents,

I am thrilled you will be serving as Regents of your chapters during the first year of my administration! Alabama has wonderful leaders who are dedicated to our state society and promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism on a daily basis. A very special thank you is extended to each of you!

It is hard to believe we are celebrating the final year of our state’s bicentennial. Chapters have done incredible bicentennial events the past two years. I look forward to sharing our stories, the focus of the committee in 2019 and hearing about all your bicentennial events and activities.

As we move Forward in Service to America and begin the third and final year of the Dillon Administration, I am honored to serve as your 40th State Regent and want to tout your many accomplishments in my State Regent’s Report during the 128th Continental Congress in 2019. Patriotism will be the primary focus of this report. I think Alabama Daughters do an outstanding job sponsoring and promoting patriotic activities and I look forward to hearing about each one.

In this packet you will find the forms you will need to submit for your chapter dues and contributions, State Standard of Excellence, credentials for the state conference, report of chapter officers, and notice of a chapter member’s death. All of these are state forms. They will be placed on the state members’ web site, but they are also provided in this packet for your use. If you need to duplicate one, you may make the copy on plain white paper. It is not necessary for copies to be the same color as the form. National forms and the National Information Packet (NIP) may be downloaded from the NSDAR member’s website, www.members.dar.org. The NIP may also be ordered from the DAR Store. In addition, the packet contains flyers from many of our officers and state chairs, who have information to share with you. Please put the packet in a notebook for reference, and share the information from the state chairs with your chapter chairs.

We hope this information will be helpful to you in planning your chapter’s events and activities this year. Please feel free to contact any state officer or state chair if you have any questions. We are always available and eager to help at any time! Tammy Growing and Blooming for Future Generations! TABLE OF CONTENTS - 2018 DISTRICT PACKET

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHAPTER CHAPLAINS

Chaplains should read the following carefully:

1. The chapter chaplain report form should be used by all chapter chaplains (no matter what forms are used on the chapter and state levels) to request 90 or 100 year birthday greetings or report deaths of current or past members of the National Board of Management to the Chaplain General. Please read the instructions carefully.

2. Requests for birthday greetings must be received prior to the 10th of the month previous to the birthday. (If the birthday is October 13, please send the request by September 10.) Belated greetings beyond one month will not be sent.

3. The Chaplain General, if notified in time, sends greetings to members age 90, 100 and beyond 100. State and chapter chaplains are encouraged to send greetings to members celebrating birthdays 91–99. Do not send the Birthday Greeting Request months ahead, thus preventing a greeting reaching the family of a deceased member.

4. All chapters are responsible for reporting deaths through eMembership .

5. The chapter chaplain’s report form is used to report only deaths of current or past members of the National Board of Management (Executive Officer, Honorary President General, past Executive Officer, Vice President General, Honorary Vice President General, past Vice President General, State Regent or Honorary State Regent) to the Chaplain General. The State Chaplain and State Regent must also be notified of these deaths. The State Regent is responsible for notifying the Office of the President General.

6. Please do not cut the report into strips as this complicates the filing procedure.

7. Verify that the member’s entire name (first, maiden or middle, and last) is given and her address is current and spelled correctly .

8. Please use the chapter code with state abbreviation (e.g., 4–009–WV) to distinguish between the location of the chapter and the member’s address. Quite often, members do not live where their chapters are located.

9. Please write dates as follows: month, date, and year (e.g., Sept. 4, 2018).

10. You may email the form to the address above. The Chaplain General will verify receipt within three days. Please email a second time if you receive no response. Kindly choose to send the form either via email or snail mail delivery, and not both.

The American Heritage Committee seeks to preserve our rich American heritage in the fields of art and sculpture, crafts, drama and literature, fiber arts, and music. You are encouraged to have programs on these topics at your Chapter meetings and to enter your works in the contests for each of these areas.

The theme for the 2018 – 2019 American Heritage contests is "Honoring Our Patriots While Preserving Our Family Stories." The theme for the Historic Costume division is “The Era of the Revolution,” and the time period is 1773 – 1783.

Please note that judges will be looking for construction photos within the art and sculpture, crafts, and fiber arts categories. Each historic costume entry needs to incorporate the overall theme of the contest within the entry.

The Fiber Arts competition has added two new categories: Quilt Top – not quilted or bound, machine or hand pieced Rug Making – hooked woven, or any other technique.

The Music competition will have only two categories this year, Instrumental & Vocal. Music – Other has been removed.

Allison Talley Skipworth, Awards Committee Chair 110 Underwood Drive Florence, AL 35633 256/335-6493 CHAPTER DEVELOPMENT & REVITALIZATION COMMISSION

Rita Horton, Co-Chair 2718 Treyburne Lane SE, Hampton Cove, AL 35763-9326 (256) 651-9733 [email protected]

The mission of the Chapter Development and Revitalization Commission (CDRC) is to coordinate the combined efforts of the Organizing Secretary General, Registrar General, and the National Chairs of the Membership, Lineage Research, and Volunteer Genealogists committees. Together we A*I*M to Attract, Inspire and Mentor! The goal of A*I*M is to assist states and chapters to attract new member growth, involve all members in DAR activities, and mentor members to strengthen their skills and knowledge of DAR.

• Attract—(verb) ‘cause to come to participate in a venture by offering something of interest … ’ • Involve—(verb) ‘to experience or participate in an activity or situation … ’ • Mentor—(verb) ‘to advise or train (someone, especially a younger colleague)’

Each state society is encouraged to develop its own state CDRC, mirroring the commission members on the national level and as a team work together to support chapters in their state. The volunteers of the State CDRC, while wearing many hats, have specialties. Membership specialists can train a chapter with how to contact prospective members quickly and appropriate next steps. Lineage research volunteers can train chapter members the ‘how and where’ to research for the supporting documentation necessary to complete an application and volunteer genealogist specialists can train a chapter how to prepare applications that meet current standards. The state CDRC Chair will present the name or names for chapter assignments to the State Regent who will make the assignment of the volunteer genealogist to the designated chapter. By joining forces, the state commission ensures that chapters receive the correct assistance to support their need(s). As our Society continues Moving Forward in Service to America, each member of the Chapter Development and Revitalization Commission stands at the ready to provide guidance and assist states and chapters. Please feel free to contact your state CDRC or the members of the National CDRC for assistance. The CDRC Webpage contains valuable information for chapters and states: http://members.dar.org/committees/chaptDev-Rev/index.htm.

• Be the energy you want to attract! • “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” — Benjamin Franklin • Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.

Museum Tuesday Talk: Suffragists in Washington DC: The 1913 Parade and the

Fight for the Right to Vote 12:00 – 1:00

The great Suffrage Parade was the first civil rights march to use the nation’s capital as a backdrop. Despite sixty years of relentless campaigning by suffrage organizations, by 1913 only six states allowed women to vote. Then Alice Paul came to Washington, D. C. She planned a grand spectacle on Pennsylvania Avenue on the day before Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration-marking the beginning of a more aggressive strategy on the part of the women’s suffrage movement. Groups of women protested and picketed outside the White House, and some were thrown into jail. Newspapers across the nation covered their activities. These tactics finally led to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Author Rebecca Boggs Roberts narrates the heroic struggle of Alice Paul and the National Woman’s Party as they worked to earn the vote.

Speaker: Rebecca Boggs Roberts, author of “Suffragists in Washington, D. C.”

Union Grove, AL 35175-9388 ASDAR Genealogical Records Committee

Sandra Carter, ASDAR Co-Chairman 1010 Mountain Trace Birmingham, AL 205-437-1712 [email protected] The purpose of the Genealogical Research Committee (GRC) is two-fold: to collect, preserve, and increase the holdings of unpublished genealogical source materials in the DAR Library; and to make those same records available worldwide through an online, every-name index.

Three Projects Honoring our Heritage, Focusing on the Future and Celebrating America epitomizes the purpose of Genealogical Records Committee. Whether you enjoy visiting historic archives, tramping through cemeteries or prefer to work in the comfort of your home GRC has a project tailor made to fit you.

Project #1 – Collect and Index Unpublished Records

Members copy or make abstracts of unpublished records. Particular emphasis continues to be on records of the 1880s and 1890s to help fill in the void left by the loss of the 1890 federal census. However, this emphasis is not intended to exclude records before 1880 or after 1900. These records may include county and town deeds and other land records; marriage and vital records; wills and estates; Bible records and cemetery transcriptions, etc. Detailed directions for gathering and transcribing source records can be found in the publication, Instructions for Copying Source Records and Preparing Them for Library Use (Form LG-GRC-2000).

Project #2 – GRC Every-Name Indexing Project

This is an ongoing indexing of the names in the nearly 20,000 GRC volumes currently in the DAR Library Collection. The indexing is done entirely online, from digitized images, using the GRC Indexing website. Detailed instructions for the GRC Every-Name Project are available in the PDF document, DAR Library: Genealogical Records Collection Indexing Program (Form LG-GRC-2001).

Project #3 – GRC Bible Catalog Project

This project is designed to create a catalog of each unique Bible record found within the Genealogical Records Committee collection. The project is done on the computer from the comfort of your home. Each Bible Catalog entry is applied to Book Worm credit.

To volunteer for Projects #2 or #3, click on the Volunteer Now line in the navigation bar under Genealogical Records on the Genealogical Committee home page.

Since 1890, the mission of the DAR has been to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The Historic Preservation Committee, established as a national Committee on March 1, 2008, seeks to honor the nation’s heritage, focus on the future, and celebrate America.

Through its two awards, the Historic Preservation Medal and the Historic Preservation Recognition Award, it encourages recognition of significant volunteer efforts at the community, state and national levels.

The Historic Preservation Project Contest provides a path to recognize worthy chapter and state projects at the state, division, and national levels.

The Historic Sites and Properties Database recognizes and promotes an awareness of the wide array of DAR owned and maintained sites and properties throughout the nation.

The committee provides a number of resources and tools to help chapters carry out the work of historic preservation and it recognizes the work of chapters through success stories.

Chapters and all DAR members are encouraged to support the Juniors official fund-raising project - the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund.

What is the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund? Authorized in 1938, named in memory of the daughter of Helena R. Pouch, first national chair of the Junior Membership Committee in 1937 and later President General from 1941-1944. This fund provides scholarships, medical aid, and general assistance to the DAR schools. Kate Duncan Smith DAR School is a beneficiary of the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund (HPMF).

How can a chapter or DAR member support HPMF? It is fun and effortless! Shop at the AL DAR Junior Sales Table or make a donation. Sales of nationally approved Junior products and donations enables the Juniors to meet their financial commitment to the DAR schools, classroom grants and other service organizations; this includes Kate Duncan Smith DAR School and other schools in through out the State of Alabama. The AL DAR Junior Sales has a variety of patriotic and DAR items and special approved state items. Sales and donations can be made at any time.

Here are some tips to attract new juniors, engage your current Junior Members to DAR, and retain junior members in your chapter. • Mentor a Junior member. Share your love of DAR and encourage a junior member’s participation in DAR. Help a junior to connect to one of the three objectives of DAR: Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism. Show prospective and current juniors the wonderful impact and accomplishments of the DAR. Make it relevant to their lives. • Host a Junior sponsored Social Event for the juniors to get to know the chapter members and fellow Juniors. Recruiting new Juniors can become a fun event for everyone when you can be with a friend. • Have a Junior sponsored Service Project to foster DAR participation. It is easy to participate when a junior is not worried about a babysitter or conflict with a work schedule. • Reach out to young women in your community. Local colleges and universities are an excellent place to start. • Elect a chapter Outstanding Junior each year. It’s important to recognize the work of your chapter’s junior members. • Encourage your chapter’s Junior members to Page at State and National events. Paging is a wonderful opportunity to serve and learn about the DAR. Paging makes lifelong friendships.

Want to EARN a NEW PIN? Here is how—Become a FRIEND OF JUNIOR MEMEBRSHIP! The Friends of Junior Membership Endowment supports the Junior Membership Committee’s projects. How can I become a Friend of Junior Membership? Members and chapters are encouraged to contribute any amount to the Friends of Junior Membership. Contributions of $100 or more are eligible to purchase the Friends of Junior Membership pin from Hamilton Jewelers. Members and chapters can continue to support Friends of Junior Membership by becoming a Best Friend of Junior Membership with an additional donation of $100. This makes you eligible to purchase the “Best Friends” pin with a gold hanging bar engraved with Friends of Junior Membership.

Election of a Chapter Outstanding Junior ______

Chapters should elect a Chapter Outstanding Junior every year. The active Juniors of your chapter are Outstanding. Let’s make it official.

Who is a Junior Member? A Junior Member is a DAR member age 18 through 35 years of age (until her 36th birthday).

Why should a chapter have an Outstanding Junior? Honoring young women who have truly promoted the aims and purposes of the National Society, as well as participated in community activities encourages all Junior members to be vitally interested and involved in DAR programs and projects. How does a chapter elect a Chapter Outstanding Junior? It is simple and easy. Follow the following procedure from the current Roberts Rules of Order 11th Edition:

Regent: “The next order of business is to elect a Chapter Outstanding Junior. The floor is now open for a motion to elect a Chapter Outstanding Junior.”

Member: “I move that (insert Junior’s name here) be elected Chapter Outstanding Junior.”

Another Member: “Second”

Regent: “It is moved and seconded that (insert Junior’s name here) be elected Chapter Outstanding Junior. Is there any discussion?

If there is no discussion or debate, proceed with the vote.

Regent: The question is to elect (insert Junior’s name here) as the Chapter Outstanding Junior. All those in favor, Say "Aye"; all those opposed, "No". The ayes have it, and the motion is carried. Congratulations to (insert Junior’s name here), our chapter Outstanding Junior.”

Chapters are encouraged to present the Chapter Outstanding Junior Pin and Certificate at a Chapter meeting. This special honor will foster participation by your chapter’s Junior members. Be sure and report the chapter outstanding junior on the Chapter Master Report. Junior Membership Question #1 is always: List name and contact information of Chapter Outstanding Junior. To be eligible for the State Outstanding Juniors Contest (All state winners automatically advance to compete in the national contest), the Chapter Outstanding Junior needs to be elected and have her application submitted to the state chair by October 31st. If is she not interested in the national contest, then the Chapter Regent needs to have submit her name to the State Chair by February 1st. Please see the DAR website or contact the State Chairman for more information regarding the contest. Lineage Research Committee

For more information, visit the National Defense Committee webpage or contact Kaye Sutley. Public Relations and Media Committee The mission of the Public Relations and Media Committee is to inform DAR members and their communities about the historic preservation, education, and patriotic mission and activities of the DAR. The Dillon Administration continues the commitment to increase public awareness of DAR objectives and programs. Use the information on this Committee’s portion of the DAR website to more effectively promote the activities of our chapters and our organization to your members and to your communities. Move DAR forward as you continue to serve America!

INTERNAL PUBLIC RELATIONS - Promoting DAR to Your Members Start with your own chapter. The more your members know about what your chapter does, the more connected they will feel to it and to each other. The more connected each member feels, the more active she will be. And we all know active members lead to active, growing chapters! Review and adapt the items you’re already using -- like chapter meeting agendas, newsletters, yearbooks, emailed meeting reminders and minutes, phone trees, and Facebook pages -- to reach your member where she is every day. If your chapter doesn’t have a newsletter or social media presence, start simple, but start today!

EXTERNAL PUBLIC RELATIONS - Promoting DAR to the Public Newspapers, radio, and television should be utilized to promote DAR events with a community impact, but they aren’t your only public relations targets. Strive to make a great impression on everyone in your community. You never know where you’ll find your next member, speaker, or donor! Leave copies of your chapter brochure or past issues of the American Spirit magazine at your local historical society, library, historic homes, hair salon or doctor’s office. Answer all inquiries promptly. Remember that the President General is the official spokesperson for the Society and only she can speak on policies or positions of the National Society.

Photo Releases With the increased use of online services to share the DAR message, the issue of when to have a signed photo release form has risen. The DAR Members’ Website provides guidance and clarification for when a photo release is needed. However, be aware that if a minor is featured in a photograph, a signed photo release must be obtained from a parent or legal guardian.

Social Media Guidelines Guidelines describing the basic framework and process of creating public and private DAR-related social media sites are in place. You can view a PDF version of the NSDAR Online Guidelines on the DAR Members’ Website. Members are also cautioned to remember that information posted on the Internet is often subject to a very wide audience and good judgment should be followed, in addition to these guidelines, when sharing information online. PUBLIC - These sites are open to the public and promote DAR activities, encourage DAR membership, provide accurate information about DAR, provide a place to answer questions from prospective members, and may engage prospective members in discussion about the National Society. Public sites are NOT for the purpose of communicating or discussing DAR chapter or state business. PRIVATE - Private sites are closed or password protected and for viewing by DAR members only. DAR member verification is required to access them. They are used to discuss DAR business, post notices, share newsletters, and communicate within the chapter or state. Every effort must be made to keep these closed pages or private groups from public view. A minimum of two (more is recommended) administrators is required.

Awards Chapters with outstanding public relations efforts and/or media coverage of events receive recognition, so be sure you are recording your achievements on the Chapter Master Report!

This new National committee has been established to capture the magnitude of volunteer service provided by NSDAR volunteers. This committee encourages community service by all members on all levels as a means of honoring our heritage. Our new President General, Ann Turner Dillon, challenges us to report 19 million hours of community service over the next three years in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the congressional approval of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote. Many outstanding DAR members such as Susan B. Anthony worked long and hard to achieve the women’s right to vote. We honor them and our patriot ancestors by giving back our love and appreciation of their sacrifices to the citizens of this country through volunteer services. TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS!!!

Chapter Regents are encouraged to name a Committee Chairman to rally members to volunteer service and to remind members to record the hours spent performing “meaningful community service.” This service is defined as any activity benefitting those outside of the Chapter and DAR. Members need to ask themselves these questions: • Does the service benefit someone in the community or the community at large? • Is the action one that is visible in the community? • Is the action one that benefits those outside the member’s family in any way? If the answer to the above questions is “yes,” then this is community service!

Examples of work that can be counted as volunteer service hours: • Causes such as Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society, etc. • Homeless shelters or soup kitchens • Volunteering in churches (education, shut-ins, etc.), schools, and hospitals • Local cultural organizations such as theater groups, symphonies, museums, etc. • Community-wide trash collection and recycling (not just personal) • Transporting or sitting with those facing medical issues (non-family members) • Teachers’ before and after school activities directly overseeing youth activities (for which they are unpaid) • Registering voters and serving as poll workers • Presenting programs to outside groups but NOT DAR chapters.

Examples of DAR activities that count toward community service: • Indexing records within the Patriot Records Project objective (as these records and indices will support other repositories of Revolutionary War records outside of DAR) • Conducting lineage workshops open to the public • Volunteering on behalf of veterans • Compiling care packages to active duty military personnel • Promoting literacy through tutoring or other volunteer support • Collecting and mailing box tops, labels, and clothes to the DAR schools • Organizing community events and celebrations including activities • Welcoming home active duty service personnel • Serving as senior leaders of C.A.R. societies and JAC clubs by engaging youths in service opportunities (not other job activities such as planning meetings, arranging speakers, etc.)

Examples of individual activities that are NOT community service: • Praying for those less fortunate or government leaders • Flying the Flag—this is part of our civic responsibility as proud citizens • Voting and jury duty • Campaigning for political candidates • Traveling to and from any community service activity • Homeschooling • Childcare for a child or grandchild or elder care arrangements • Conservation efforts for a member’s personal residence

Examples of Chapter activities NOT acceptable as community service: • Attending or speaking to DAR meetings and forums • Attending DAR meetings (regents’ council, cameo clubs, state/national officers, etc.) • Serving as a DAR/C.A.R. chapter/state/national officer or chairman • Conducting genealogical workshops or research for prospective members or supplemental applications • Volunteering as a Volunteer Information Specialist in support of chapters, states, or NSDAR • Creating or monitoring chapter websites, Facebook websites, etc. • Preparing chapter yearbooks and chapter newsletters • Making individual monetary contributions without any active service

Chapters are asked to record members’ volunteer hours in two ways: (1) via the Service to America Online Tally at the members’ website; and, (2) the Chapter Master Report (CMR).

Chapter Chairmen are encouraged to plan now for a special chapter volunteer event celebrating the National Day of Service, October 11, 2018.

Deadline: Success Stories maybe turn in at any time, but are due no later than February 1st *Make sure to visit the national website to read success stories from other states/chapters for ideas

*Remember to document hours, activities, donations, etc. for use on the CMR The Community Classroom Committee was established by the National Society in June 2016 at the beginning of the Dillon Administration to move forward in service to America. Daughters of the American Revolution have always supported historic preservation, education, and patriotism as exhibited by many National Committees. The Community Classroom Committee seeks to encourage Daughters to volunteer to provide additional support to teachers and children in classrooms and schools in their own communities throughout the nation, as well as overseas. Education makes the difference for all children. DAR women can provide a positive force for children who have difficult circumstances at home. Students at risk of school failure at all levels, preschool through high school, need extra assistance to develop skills and confidence to become responsible and productive citizens. Chapter Community Classroom chairs are encouraged to assist their chapters in adopting a classroom or school to provide time and/or financial support. Begin with a teacher in your chapter or a teacher or principal you know. You may have Daughters with children or grandchildren whose school would be a place to begin. Chapter Junior American Citizens chairs, DAR Good Citizen chairs, American History chairs, and Children of the American Revolution students also have contacts within your community schools. Ask the teacher or principal what assistance would be helpful in their classroom or school setting.

ASDAR Cameo Society Revised July 2018

The Children of the American Revolution “I believe in the Children of the American Revolution as an organization for the training of young people in true patriotism and love of country, in order that they be better fitted for American Citizenship.” (C.A.R. Creed)

Harriett M. Lothrop presented her idea of an organization similar to that of the DAR for the training of young people in leadership, citizenship, and patriotism to the fourth Continental Congress. Her dream was realized in 1895, when the C.A.R. was formed. Today, the C.A.R. continues to fulfill her dream to educate and train some 9,595 members across the United States. But your help is needed!

How Can your DAR Chapter Help?

1. Sponsor a Society! Yes it takes time and energy, but it is well worth it! Currently, Alabama has eleven active Chapters. Contact the Senior State President or this State Chair for a society near you or more information on organizing a society.

2. Recruit new members! All children, male and female, with a proven Revolutionary Patriot, are eligible from birth until the day they turn 22. Your children and grandchildren are a great place to start.

3. Make a donation to the State Society! $5 is one of the requirements for the State Standard of Excellence, but we accept any amount. Send to: William Clement, Jr. 2545 Dunmore Dr., Hoover, AL 35226-2427. You might also assist a society near you.

4. Invite a C.A.R. Society to join in your DAR activities. Even if you don’t sponsor a society, invite the State President, or members of a group near you to join in an activity.

5. Check out committee information on DAR members only website, or the C.A.R. website, nscar.org to learn more.
