Background Information

The College

Since 1967, Confederation College has been serving the citizens of northwestern with a main campus in , and regional campuses in the communities of Dryden, , Geraldton, , , Red Lake, Marathon and Wawa. The College offers 58 full-time programs in 11 areas of study to a community of 6,500 combined full-time and part-time students, including a large international and Indigenous student population. With highly trained faculty, smaller class sizes and a dynamic learning environment, Confederation College offers programs and courses that provide students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed.

Employing approximately 404 full-time and 225 FTE part-time employees, Confederation College has an annual operating budget of approximately $90 million and is governed by a volunteer Board of 12 appointed external members, 4 elected internal members and the College President.

The College offers a full range of programs and educational services throughout the region: full-time, postsecondary programs, part-time credit and non-credit courses, specialty programs for business and industry, pre-employment and skills training programs, apprenticeship programs and co-operative/workplace training programs. Many of these educational services are provided utilizing a combination of traditional and innovative distance modes of delivery.

Position Summary

The Vice President, Finance and Administration provides leadership, strategic planning and senior management direction to the senior team, administrators and staff responsible for financial and budget services, contract management, risk management, public safety, purchasing, advancement, information technology, facilities and capital planning, as well as ancillary services of the College (food services, wellness centre, campus bookstore, children and family centre and residence). This position is also the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the College and Treasurer to the Board of Governors.

The VP is accountable for creating and sustaining a high performance team that provides administrative support services to the College. The incumbent is a senior administrator who participates in the overall management of the College as a member of the President’s senior team and includes supporting the achievement of the objectives of Confederation College’s Strategic Plan.

Candidate Profile

Education/Professional Designations

. A Master’s Degree or equivalent is preferred at the point of hire into the position e.g. MBA, M.Ed. A Professional Accounting designation is required (CPA).

Experience and Knowledge

. A minimum of 15 years of proven, progressive, senior financial leadership experience. . Demonstrated experience in the administration and provision of high quality financial services. . Demonstrated experience in creating community and strategic relationships. . Strategic planning; aligning annual operating plans with same and supporting with people and resources. . Experience with the creation and tactical implementation of a financial vision, plan and direction. . Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Canadian relationship building and interdependence as well as northwestern Ontario’s regional context, its demographics and its relationship to the province, Canada and internationally. . Proven ability to build relationships, partnerships and networks, internally and externally. Able to represent and positively “promote” the College and its objectives. . Demonstrated success building positive and proactive labour relations and working relationships with unions and the non-represented staff. . Knowledge of the northern concept and the socio-economic impact of the College for the community. . Understanding of GAAP, accounting processes and financial statements. . Strong leadership and decision making skills with an exceptional capability for resolving issues in an open and consultative manner. . Creative thinking and the ability to develop solutions within challenging environments. . Expertise in strategic and business planning. . Expertise in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and modeling as well as experience in preparing financial statements, management reports and business plans.

. Ability to lead a team of senior managers from different disciplines. . Ability to negotiate and manage complex contracts and relationships. . Experience developing and negotiating funding for large, complex capital projects. . Ability to develop and optimize collaborative alliances and partnerships. .
